I can't stand that fake dyed wood. It looks so unnatural. - and it fades too. Once you do it you either always do it or dig it all up and replace it some day.

I love what I use - it's recycled pine bark mulch and part of it comes from old telephone poles. It isn't big it is rather small. Being dark brown it presents a nice contrast for the grass and landscaping planted inside of the areas it is in. It is small enough that I can also use it on top of the soil of potted plants.

    Actually ..
    I've got a chipper ..
so when I do my normal spring yardwork ..
and do the trimming and taking down trees that have been too stressed .. (or are showing they are not going to last much longer)
I'll chainsaw them down into smaller pieces ..
split even further if necessary ..
then chip the results and put down as mulch ..

(I'll also purchase natural chips .. for mulching the garden areas around my home. I don't like the dyes for my planting beds)

Exactly. If I purchase mulch, my preferred is buckwheat groats. Natural woodchips are nice as well, but - like you - I detest dyed chips in theory and practice.

:) I guess it might be regional I'm not sure - I get mine from a landscaping company and it comes either in a truck load or in a bag. I buy bags and spread it myself. It's also very economical. I love the rich dark rich brown and the fine texture always looks neat and natural.

But not maintenance-free. Those things blow around and make a mess. Plus, that yucca is growing like a cancer down below the surface, and will continually pop up in other places.

Don't like the red ones as much as the natural colored ones. Red in this setting looks ok, though.
