Food substitutes claim to offer healthier alternatives to "the real thing," but food critics complain that the substitutes don't taste as good.

FOXNEWS.COM reports:
Substitutes generally disappoint in head-to-head food comparisons: sugar vs. stevia (sweetener derived from South American perennial shrubs); steak vs. tempeh (a slightly-fermented soybean and grain patty); Parmesan cheese vs. “nutritional yeast.”

Chemicals, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, artificial colors, artificial food, might be good for artificial people... but real people should eat real foods, eating closer to the earth, least processed, least adulterated... I'm not talking vegan or such, just the kinds of foods my grandparents and parents ate. Whole milk, maybe even (gasp) raw milk, heavy cream, butter, lard, real meat, pork... yeah give me real food anytime!

That depends. Low fat mayonnaise made with olive oil is a great alternative to the artery clogging real mayonnaise. But for most eating, sticking to the diet we ate as hunter gathers is best. That is what we evolved to prosper on.

However keep it at a moderately low level. The stuff that kept me skinny now makes me fat.

Most of these prove to be much worse than the real ingredients over time. Anything that hasn't been out for a good period of time is a gamble.

They can keep their lab creations. As they keep adding these FAKE substitutes to our foods we keep getting sicker and sicker. Does no one notice this?

I actually use Sweet-in-Low for my drinks. It's not for the lack of calories, but disperses better. However, I really have to wonder about these little tricks and sciences. Avoiding that terrible sugar, so using aspartame, which might cause cancer. So a new invention comes out as a replacement, a "healthier" choice. You might avoid diabetes, but be among the first victims of the newest pandemic. I realize the irony that I'm knowingly poisoning myself, here, but everything is poisoned these days. Anything made by Nabisco, Kraft, Pepsi, Cadbury uses aborted fetal cells. Your fruits and vegetables have pesticides. God knows what all is in our water supply. From weapons testing, to fluoride, to pesticides, to genetically engineered crab grass weed killer? Then your meat, such as chicken, has antibiotics and arsenic in it. Pick your poison.

Whenever they come up with food substitutes they are sold as being healthier, then a few years later, it comes out that they are much less healthy.

Margerine was supposed to be healthier than butter, but then it came out that trans fats are actually way worse for you than butter.

Aspartame was supposed to be healthier than sugar, but now it is known to be responsible for a laundry list of negative side effects and sugar is healthy by comparison.

Soy was supposed to be healthier than meat, but now it's been linked to allergies, digestive tract problems and sterility.

Give me good old ingredients, I don't want to be a guinea pig for food companies.

Soy would've have probably been better than meat if most of it wasn't GMO. That's where the sterility comes into play.

That's true, but since there is no labelling requirement, there is no way to know whether the soy you're eating is GMO or not. Therefore I assume that all soy is GMO.

You get used to them for the sake of not becoming diabetic. Eat a lot of chicken and turkey. Eat only egg whites. I make mine with peppers and onions. I fry only with Pam. Eat only whole wheat breads or pumpernickel. There are lots of good tasting foods to eat that have no fat, cholest or sugar. Eat veggies and fruits. Veggie burgers are delicious.

Pam is loaded with chemicals. You can make your own spray from olive oil, which is a good fat.

Better Taste for the REAL foods ..
far healthier overall (than fakes or genetically modifieds)

I'm diabetic and I don't use anything artificial! I carb count & it works! I generally keep my blood sugars right where they should be! I admit I fall off the wagon sometimes, but it's rare!
