Real Fat, Real Sugar, Real Good: Do Cooking Substitutes Cut It?

Food substitutes claim to offer healthier alternatives to "the real thing," but food critics complain that the substitutes don't taste as good.

FOXNEWS.COM reports:
Substitutes generally disappoint in head-to-head food comparisons: sugar vs. stevia (sweetener derived from South American perennial shrubs); steak vs. tempeh (a slightly-fermented soybean and grain patty); Parmesan cheese vs. “nutritional yeast.”

Chemicals, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, artificial colors, artificial food, might be good for artificial people... but real people should eat real foods, eating closer to the earth, least processed, least adulterated... I'm not talking vegan or such, just the kinds of foods my grandparents and parents ate. Whole milk, maybe even (gasp) raw milk, heavy cream, butter, lard, real meat, pork... yeah give me real food anytime!

Pitter Patter, Pitter Patter. That is my heart beating. I so love the ocean.

By the way, which is it that helps us live longer? The romance or the beach!

Mostly, I choose the real thing. Even then GMO (Geneticly Modified Organics) and meat that has been shot up with growth enhancers and hormones are hard to escape. A study showed that children enter puberty at an eairler age than a generation ago because of growth hormones that are consumed by the public. The draw back to going organic is the price of the products. If you can afford it, go organic. Years down the road from now you'll appreciate your choice.

Many of the substitutes the BODY DOESN'T RECOGNIZE them as meeting the requirements of the BODY (e.g.SUGAR vs artificial sweeteners). So the BODY leaves 'ON' the EAT URGE resulting in OVEREATING AND OVERWEIGHT!!!!!!!

Anything fresh (and closer to it's natural state) is better for you. All things need to be eaten in moderation and a wide variety eaten. Food substitutes (suger, butter, etc) have proven to be more dangerous than anything you could get from nature.

It depends.....I try to combine the substitutes and the real deal and that way things taste better and have less calories and half the fat. I am at an age where health is key and so I use spray veggie oil instead of butter when i sauté, but sometimes add just a touch of butter for flavor. Same thing with my salad dressing. Just a dash of oil and then spices, vinegar and water and nobody even notices the difference because you can still taste the olive oil. I think you have to be creative and combine them. I use light cheese, not fat free items in the dairy dept. You still get the yummy taste. I poach my salmon and it comes out perfect and that way it isn't greasy and your house doesn't smell fishy. On chicken or turkey I use chicken broth rather than butter and also in my stuffing... There are lots of ways to eat healthier and still have everything taste great!! My cholesterol is high enough, I don't need to die from indulging on too many fatty products when I can enjoy the taste of everything by cutting down and being creative. Once you pass 50, your entire body chemistry changes and you have to watch what you eat. You are foolish if you think that you can spend the second half of your life eating like you did when you were young.

For the most part, substitutes don't cut it. There is really no substitute for the rich full flavor of cooking with real ingredients. You won't find them using substitutes in any five star restaurants for this very reason! The one exception I have found is Splenda for making desserts. I use it exclusively since my husband is diabetic.

The key is moderation. A small amount of the really tasty high fat/sugar stuff is better for me than a huge piece of lowfat reduced sugar junk. Besides, I exercise so that I can eat something I like once in a while.

In moderation are not bad for you, but substitutes are filled with chemicals and preservatives, and those are NEVER good for you.

I was using some substitutes, but have gone away totally from them. All natural now especially the sweeteners as the substitutes give me migranes. No added hormones, no pesticides, etc. I have also started limiting the "canned goods".

There are some good substitutes but most things there is no replacement for ;-)
