We all should be proud of our heritage and I'm sick of whites being belittled if they dare mention proud and white in the same sentence

I'm certainly not ashamed of it, and in the same sentence, I'd also state that I would leave it to social engineers and the like to hand wring over demographics, and the like. I am who I am, the color I am, and I spend my time worrying about issues that matter. If you surround yourself with quality people, you don't see color.

And who determines what is "politically correct"? (And if you say Barack Obama I'm going to throw up.) Listen much to Bill Mahr?

Why is having a certain skin color something to be or not to be proud of? The only thing that I have to be proud of is my accomplishments and my qualities and my very being. Skin color is such a...dare I say it...materialistic thing.

What's your reason to be proud of a skin color? It's not like you earned it or anything. You were just born that way. You should be proud of things that you accomplish in your life with your own hard work and tenacity.

I agree. It's only melanin, or in some people the lack of it.

Your sentiment is all about tribalism. In the past it was important to identify with your ingroup and support its members, since you might well require their support at some time.
Today thoughtful people don't go about flaunting the strength and superior position of their tribe, regardless of what colour they are. Today thoughtful people are ready to reach across tribal lines and find allies among those with distinctly different backgrounds than their own.
Of course, we are not all thoughtful, are we? Some of us continue to get our notions from our stane age ancestors.

YOU WON'T GET A RAVE FROM THIS WHITE BOY! Your statement in and of itself, causes those of us who are white, that have respect for others to be embarrassed that we are grouped with people like you.

I didn't rave either for pretty much the same reason. I just commented. But since as of this moment there are 237 raves on this post, I'm thinking she hit a sore spot on a lot of people. A teeny little bit worrysome.

I want to answer your question carefully and seriously because it's important. It's worrysome to me that apparently a large number of people agreed with your initial challenge (to rave if not ashamed of being white), but then so many of the comments have had veiled and some not-so-veiled tinges of white supremacy. I am NOT talking about your comments specifically, and I don't think you are a white supremacist. Far from it. I think your heart is in the right place. However, I also think that you may not be as sensitive to the issues involving people of color as you might wish to be. At some point someone besides me posted that your original question framed as a challenge could be interpreted as racist to non-whites. That you are unable to perceive that tells me a lot. You acknowledged being conservative. I suspect you are also young. Let your mind remain open to new ideas. Some things you believe right now you may feel differently about in 10 or 20 years. I'm not suggesting you should desert your faith, your political beliefs, (or your love of Texas, for that matter. :) ) I'm just asking you to accept that it's possible to be a work in progress. It's a good thing to stand up for what you believe in. It's also a good idea to avoid closing off your mind and experiences to things that are new and different and not the same as what you currently believe and experience. I wish you a positive life journey.

I'm proud of who I am, of being a TXn and an American, being White is part of that, I guess. But, at the same time, why not be proud of what you have achieved, reguardless of color, race, ethnicity, sex or any other element that serves to divide people.

Angelbaby, sometime, somewhere, at some point your "conservatism" came out of your mouth sounding racist to somebody. That doesn't make you a racist, but you may want to pause and really think through the situation in which someone called you a racist. Or perhaps there was more than one occurance? If so check out that smoke because there may be a teeny tiny little flame under there.

I'm very careful as to how I word things .. I don't know
How racism could be taken from anything I've said.
With all due respect you're making an assumption ..
I've checked 'the smoke' and I'm satisfied with the
    results.

I've never been what some here would suggest ..
