Jehovah. Why do you need to post a question such as this? Belittling the faithful with such an inflammatory posting. All you're interested in is putting up some lame attempt to start a literary hatefest. And then disappearing [...]

Attaching the question of Shame to your philosophy already speaks VOLUMES. Should have seen that one coming. In case you haven't noticed, Atheism is actually quite the popular stance these days, well amongst the "Intellectually Elite", anyhow.

I think that people who are insecure in their beliefs whether athiest or otherwise put up posts like this to help them reinforce their beliefs. Or they put up posts like this just as a stick in the eye to those with differing views. In your own way you are posting this to "force" your belief system on those who have religious beliefs yet you would be one of the first to express your outrage if a religious person did the same. Most religious people I know have a live and let live position.

Instead of being so insecure in who you are, why don't you just relax and enjoy life?

I do not understand the point of this post. Would it not mean more if one took pride in what one does believe in, as opposed to taking pride in not believing in something?

I do not believe in many things. But I do not find the act of not believing in any of these things personally defining or fulfilling--I just do not believe in them and leave it at that, unless special circumstances require otherwise.

In light of this, I think that the general concept of "atheist pride" falls into the category of "methinks thou doth protest too much"--if you believe that "God" does not exist, then just act like it and move on to doing what you consider to be more important positive things.

I'm not atheist but if your not ashamed of it, though I see there is no need to state so because there is no reason to be for both religions and atheism branch out of one thing which is belief, you should have just rephrased the question to like are you an athiest? because well why would someone be an atheist if he's "ashamed".

Not having that interference in their lives, they were able to think for themselves and do spectacular things. They were also very good people. Not believing in God doesn't make a person immoral, but it makes them rational.

I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. (Albert Einstein, 1954)

I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings. (Albert Einstein)

A man's ethical behaviour should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.
(Albert Einstein, "Religion and Science", New York Times Magazine, 9 November 1930)

I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the kind that we experience in ourselves. Neither can I nor would I want to conceive of an individual that survives his physical death; let feeble souls, from fear or absurd egoism, cherish such thoughts. I am satisfied with the mystery of the eternity of life and with the awareness and a glimpse of the marvelous structure of the existing world, together with the devoted striving to comprehend a portion, be it ever so tiny, of the Reason that manifests itself in nature. (Albert Einstein, The World as I See It)

True, there is nothing that says that religious people cannot be good. But it does not require religion to be good, it only requires the capacity to be good and to act on that capacity. These people would have probably been good even if there was no such thing as religion but I don't care if they believe in some kind of god, I am not trying to convert anyone to atheism.

An exert form Lincoln's proclamation when he started the Thanksgiving holiday...
"No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy."

Specifically who and what evidence do you have of it. Were they Christian? Deist? Pantheist?
  • dlsofsetx Ron 2012/06/09 17:15:51
    dlsofsetx
Jefferson & Twain were Deists.Einstein did not believe in a personal God but an entity, his beliefs were an inspiation for the Star Wars force.Lincoln regularly attended Methodist services but never joined the Church, many eyewitness accounts have been documented of his frequent prayers. He once told a freed sllave who knelt before him not to do it,but kneel before God.If I'm not mistaken,Franklin was also a Deist.
  • Ron dlsofsetx 2012/06/09 20:29:51
    Ron
See the article I posted just above here to get what Lincoln's beliefs were.
Deists and pantheists are often lumped in with atheists because they do not believe in a god that concerns itself with mankind.
