Queen Latifah Wants to 'Bury' the Term 'Plus-Size': Smart or Stupid?

Queen Latifah is about to launch her own clothing line on HSN this August.

But no, it's not for plus-size women. And you'd better not let her hear you say that.

"It is a word we need to bury at this point," she told WWD of the term. "It's for all sizes."

Latifah explained that her line, which will include jeans, leggings, T-shirts and more -- will service women size 2 and up.

"The truth is, we all would like to wear the same clothes. We all want to wear beautiful, fly clothes no matter what size you are, and so for me it was important to match with a company that understood and respected that ideal."

(Now, can she come up with a pair of skinny jeans in a size 4 that don't make our thighs look huge?)

Latifah says she had a problem with the fashion industry in the past.

"I felt like larger girls were not respected, even though we are huge consumers. I was not going to step out with a clothing line that didn’t respect a fuller-figured woman or a curvaceous woman, and really all women."

So why is it OK to call a woman "fuller-figured," but not "plus-size"?

I wish you had an "other" option..I'm a plus-sized lady and I don't think it's an offensive term.. I'm not sure what she'd prefer people to say..

Plus size compared to what? When I was a teenager there was not a size zero or 2. Size 5,7,9 shops carried petite clothing. Then they added 3's. I saved some of my college clothing from the 1960's because I loved it. I was a size 3 or 5 back then and gave some beautiful leather skirts and jackets to my daughter-in-law who is by today's standards a size 0. They were tight on her. Therefore, a size 5 back in 1967 is smaller than a zero today. Sizing is just that, relative and a number, not a label of a woman's worth or value. Now that I am older, I am a size 10 and I think that is appropriate for my age. BUT, I read somewhere that a 10-12 is no longer a medium but a large and that shook me to the core. All i could think about was OMG, I'm a large????? Well, I am not big, yet the clothing industry has created a new large because women stave themselves and there are new skinny skinnies. So, if I gain any weight then what? Then, I'm a plus size? Plus size is relative to sizes and that is it. It is a rude statement and women need to love themselves at any age and any size. Full figure or curvy means what it states. Plus refers to women outside the number system and that is derogatory.

Isn't Plus Size the poilte term for overweight people? Although I've had a morbidly obese woman flip out on me when I suggest that she look through the clothes designed for plus size females when she got frustrated when she couldn't find anything in the size0-2 section. Whatever you say, someone out there is going to be offended by it. I wonder ho she would have reacted if i had used the term "fatties" instad.

Well of course sizes change over time. They even vary from country to country, just to freak us out and to make us feel bad about ourselves. Here, In Australia, a plus size is a size 20, which is her: sizes change vary country country freak feel australia 20
She's not obese, but neither is she slim.
"a 10-12 is no longer a medium but a large." Ok, that is pretty damn horrifying from my context, as we dont have anything under size 6 (someone who can fit into there is a skeleton), but if a size 0 now was a 3-5 when you were young the sizes on the label are obviously getting smaller, probably why people are considered 'plus size" for wearing a 16. it would've been a size 20 in your time maybe?

It sounds like your country at least has more realistic sizing. Women in America get smaller and smaller and it isn't healthy. I truly believe that is why there are so many more C- sections as that woman don't have hips any more and are morphing their bodies into something unnatural.

It's starting here too, I think. Everyday, new 'slim fast' products are coming out, and they're selling it to slim and healthy looking girls tring to get them to be even slimmer. But the problem is that if they get too skinny, they'll have trouble finding clothes that fit. That, and they'll muck up their systems and hormones.

Agreed. The self concept of young girls is all out of wack. As an elementary school teacher I see beautiful young girls already worrying that they are fat. The role models they have now are unrealistic, air brushed- air heads on TV, or movie stars who are druggies and skinny from substance abuse. It is very sad indeed.

I don't like the term 'Plus-Size' though I believe it would be easier when heavy or built women can find the plus size section by a sign in a large store. It would be a problem mixing large sizes with small sizes. A section of clothing for larger women has to be called some name unless it is a specialty store for large women.

Whoever wants to give negativity to the human body does not have the spirit of the one who made it in their soul. God accepts the whole being wanting us to see the whole being. Not drawing attention to any specific part.

Humans are the only animal worrying about nothing. What a human wears is his own creation, and not what God made at all. Humans are surrounded in what God made, and not as much in mans cities. Humans get used to nudity very easily, but irrational laws use fear to have humans keep his dead things on all the time.

That may be true... but I've been conditioned I guess and really do appreciate it when people be sure certain private body parts are covered. It's called modesty in the western world and in the "savage" world, when people learn that there's a G-d who loves them and has a plan for their lives, they very often start covering up more... not that I'm recommending a burka for every woman mind you but I do think wearing clothes that fit and keep one covered are only considerate of others.
  • kobidob... thegaln... 2011/05/27 17:55:51
    kobidobidog
We cover ourselves because we are guilty of believing the lie of the devil, and are trying to make up for it covering ourselves in our own works. That is not going to correct the error. Jesus in us corrects the error saving the soul. A naked human is not savage, but the clothed human who kills is savage. The one who covers up more is given guilt like Adam, and Eve were when the beguiling serpent spoke to them. God walked with Adam, and Eve knowing they were naked, and said nothing, and so should we. As I see it they are being considerate of hungry devils in others so they will not chew a naked human apart with hateful words, and not give an evil look, and violent acts.
