Queen Elizabeth Makes Surprise Appearance at Commoners' Ceremony: Would You Want a Celebrity to Crash Your Wedding?

To celebrate her Diamond Jubilee (60 years as monarch), Queen Elizabeth has been traveling on an official tour of the United Kingdom. While in Manchester on Friday, she and Prince Philip were attending a luncheon at the Manchester Town Hall. In an adjacent room, John and Fraces Canning were exchanging vows in front of a minister.

When the Cannings first realized that they would be sharing the venue with the royals—upon booking their nuptial ceremony—they sent a “lighthearted letter” to Buckingham Palace inviting the Queen to attend. Their invitation was politely declined, so when the rose-clad Queen appeared at their ceremony they were completely shocked.

“The Queen spoke to us by our first names. She said I looked lovely and she wanted to wish us all the best for the future,” Frances Canning told The Sun.

Some celebrity wedding crashers may be well received, like the Queen in this case and Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez at a wedding in Malibu. However, other newlyweds resent the intrusion, as was the situation when Russell Brand crashed an Indian wedding in London.

What about you SodaHeads? Would you want a celebrity to crash your wedding?

Why not? That was a nice thing for the Queen to do. I admire her for that. More leaders should make time to visit their people like that, in everyday situations, when their agenda allows.

The Queen would be welcome since she is a nice polite person, others, not so much.

If it were someone with the grace and dignity of a royal, why not? But a celebrity-celebrity? No thanks, not really.

wow yes and stop! I'm crazy because I would ask for autographs, and even offer them some cake. It doesn't matter what celeb either even if they wasn't my favorite but this for goodness sakes is her majesty. Whoa what a honor that must have been.

It's the marrying couple's day and a celebrity would overshadow the event.

It's a private time with friends and family. I don't care what celebrity care shows up.

It was intended to be as public as possible to show the whole of the community that these two people are married?

Still. In certain ways I'm a private person and wouldn't appreciate it at that moment.

If you weren't invited, there'd be a good reason for that... so don't crash my wedding.

But good on Liz for dropping in; although that's a neat curtsey for someone caught by surprise. Or am I simply being an old sceptic?

They're Brits. They are taught to bow and curtsey properly from their earliest school years. I'll bet when a kid complains about learning to bow, the teacher will say "and just what will you do if Her Majesty the Queen just happens to drop in? You'll look the fool, won't you."

It appears this couple took the lessons to heart and it paid off.

It's enough to have to take dance lessons in preparation for the wedding dance, but to have to polish up your curtsey for the Queen? And, of course, you'd HAVE to marry in England no doubt. And here I've had my heart set on....Bora Bora.

Your wedding should be YOUR special day (you and your spouse)... if a celebrity crashes your wedding, it just becomes that big event so-and-so attended!
*Edit* So no one misinterprets my meaning, I see nothing wrong with what happened here... they invited her.

An incredibly kind thing for the queen to do.

However, I don't know that I would want the media circus that accompanies celebrities.

My "no" isn't because they are celebrity, but because of the media that have no respect for anyone except their next paycheck.

In this case doubt that there was much media, she sort of slipped it in, unannounced?

You must be a young person who finds it funny to make light of people. When I look at the Queen I see prestige, and I respect her royality, just like for years she has respected our country and our president(s). A lot of people would like to be dead the way the Queen is dead! What a life. Obviously you don't have a lot of respect for those who have grown older in life. Keep living!

You must be senile, because that explains your lack or reading comprehension, or your understanding of British royalty.

I wrote the "Queen MOTHER", not the Queen. Actually, you also wrote "Queen Mother", but methinks, ya wench, that thee doth not know about whom thee writes.

The Queen Mother is (was) the mother of the present Queen. Which in this case is QE2's Mum, who passed away ten years ago. When she was alive, she was also called the Queen Mother, but she was not the Queen, because the monarchy was passed to QE2 from her father, George VI.

Here is an article about the Queen Mother:

Your comment tells me all I need to know about you, and I don't need to read your article regarding the Queen Mother. I know what I know, and I also know protocol, honor and respect. I also know a lot about disrespectful individuals like yourself, who do not comprehend the termonology of "opinion!" Senility has nothing to do with how old you are, it is also something that happens in young adults like yourself. You're on this format (supposedly) to share opinion and communication, which means that you have yours and I have mine.

You blew it and you know it, I think. Well, maybe you don't know it.

But you, my dear ignorant and haughty excuse of a human, started the insult thread, and seem to be having a hard time of it.

Can't take it, eh? Well if you can't take it, then I suggest you start to learn some tolerance and manners, something which you seem to be lacking.

And go ahead and continue to be ignorant, don't read the article and find out the difference between the Queen and the Queen Mother.

    It's up to you.

I wouldn't mind a celebritity crashing my wedding, I think it would be rather cool. Plus if singers wanted to share my spotlight I'd let them. Its all about the guest making themselves at home. But it was rather nice of the Queen to do that, I would admire her too!
