PUBLIC OPINION > Women Should Propose (If They Want)

SodaHead Living 2012/01/09 16:33:26
Snooki is getting a little anxious for her boyfriend to pop the question, even though they've only been together for maybe half a year. She reportedly said that she was giving the guy two years or she was gonna pop the question, and though she only mentioned it in passing, social norms are always a healthy topic to bring up. We took the opportunity to ask SodaHeads how they felt about women who want to propose.

Should Women Propose to Men?

70% Say Sure, Why Not?

A few decades ago this question probably would have gone in a completely different direction, but these days any question that starts with, "Should women..." is pretty much going to get a majority vote. Traditional expectations are definitely still there, but they've become somewhat optional for most families. One commenter wrote, "Although I prefer the old school way, I don't see the problem with a woman proposing to a man." More to the point, another respondent wrote, "Both of my wives did!"

Men Don't Mind...

There actually wasn't much of a gender gap here, but we felt we had to include this just to point out that men don't care, either. In fact, they were 5% more likely to encourage a girl to propose. Traditionally, men have taken the assertive role, even as far back as hunting and gathering societies -- but that's being challenged more and more. The Japanese even have a term for straight men who prefer submission: Grass-Eaters.

...But the Pressure's Still On

Grass-Eaters aren't getting all the luck, though. When we broke it down by relationship status, we found an interesting trend: Voters who were in an unmarried relationship were significantly less enthusiastic about letting the girl propose. Even married and engaged voters were fine with the idea, but the ones who are actually waiting for a ring are still hoping for that traditional proposal.

Sure Thing for Smokers

Not many demographics were as enthusiastic about women proposing than the smokers. Why would smokers have a stronger opinion on this? We're not sure. Maybe they have a burning desire to promote gender equality. Sorry. Bad joke. We're done.

I think it really doesn't matter ,although if it was me i wouldn't like to be the proposer and much as i would like being the one proposed to.

Girls can let their guys know what they want without a proposal. Let the man be the man. I proposed to my wife on our third date and got married a couple of weeks later.

Well as long as she doesn't do the whole "get down on one knee" bit. I would actually prefer if a woman does it, just to see how it would play out

OF COURSE! if a guy wont because he shy or whatever IF SHE LOVES HIM SHE SHOULD PROPOSE!!!!
theres no question about men proposing as apposed to both deciding.
which personally if ur in a serious relationship both deciding is the way to go.

I plan on getting married once and I had better be asked. I have informed him of this, and we talk about it occasionally, so he knows his role! I'm not particularly surprised that the people who were in relationships were more hesitant about saying women should.

I have no problem with chicks proposing, but they better be sure that their men are cool with it as well.

No. Because I am a man. I want to propose to the girl. I wouldn't feel comfortable if a girl did that.

Being one who lacks initiative, I can see why this makes sense to a lot of people. But how many women would actually go through and propose? Maybe a lot; I don't know. At any rate, it might thrust men into an uncomfortable position, but I guess that's only because it isn't a social norm yet. I guess I don't care either way, but I hope I ask first when that becomes a relevant matter to me.

I don't see a problem there. Truthfully, even in old movies (which can be enlightening as to cultural norms of various periods), while women may not have asked "the big question" in words, they usually gave off many signals that they were or were not interested in marriage. Many times they even said things like "Are you ever going to ask me?"

Most men are already doing that. They are leading to where THEY want to go...which is not into marriage. If he isn't asking he doesn't want to marry you.
