PUBLIC OPINION > Women Are More Prone to Road Rage

SodaHead Living 2012/08/02 20:43:26
A recent study found that women were more likely than men to report feelings of road rage. We weren't sure how to take that information, so we asked the public to comment. Are women really more prone to wilin' out behind the wheel?

feelings road rage information public comment women prone wilin wheel

The public believes it. About 61% of respondents said they agree with the survey results: Women are more prone to road rage. Men are usually more associated with anger and aggressive behavior, especially in visceral situations, but in the driver's seat the world always looks a little bit different. Many claimed women are quicker to flip the bird, though the Top Opinion pointed out that men are more likely to get out of the car and kick it up a notch.

Even Women Agree

Now, men were more likely to accuse women of being quick to anger on the road, but we were more surprised at the percentage of women who agreed. More than half of female voters (58%) admitted that they think women are more prone to road rage. In fact, many of them admitted their own guilt. Of course, anger does not apply to all women.

Raging Relationships

Oddly, voters in a relationship were more convinced than almost any demographic that women are more prone. Married voters, on the other hand, were split. However, there was no correlation between age. Maybe people who are married have calmed down a bit in general. Or maybe they don't drive together very often anymore.

Drinkers Judging Drivers

Finally, we noticed that drinkers were a good deal more likely to think female drivers rage on the regular. Hopefully the drinking and judging aren't simultaneous. Whatever the case, drinkers might not have as many reservations about sharing their opinions, even if it has the potential to ruffle some feathers.

I can believe that women are more likely to ADMIT TO feelings of road rage... but that's far from women being more likely to COMMIT ACTS of road rage...
I bet if stats were compiled about who has actually committed acts of road rage, it's men who are whipping out guns and threatening or shooting people because they got cut off, or getting out of their car with a tire iron and attacking others in traffic jams, not women

You got to be kidding, men's rage is more likely to be active instead of verbal or along with being verbal. I know plenty of men who will tailgate, use high beams, or pass, cut-off another driver, or be the ones causing the rage by weaving in and out between traffic.

After driving class "A" commercial trucks for 20 years. I noticed in a real world non scientific study. The most inconsiderate drivers on the road are overweight women between the ages of 25-40.

They develop "road rage easily" when applying lipstick while driving, especially when they "smear it" due to an unexpected LOUD BLAST from the air horns.

I can see that, but maybe it's because us women are hormonal? There are so many women in this world, you never know when you might cross paths with one that is in her "time of the month", lol! Anyways, It's actually pretty peaceful to drive here in Finland...But I take the metro most of the time. I actually enjoy a peaceful morning on the Metro on my way to work or fun in the city. I only ever use my car if I want to go out of town.

Agreed, women are more willing to admit to road rage. While on the other hand men who experience it, deny it entirely. From my experience men are more willing to act on it as opposed to the women.

Yes--I used to give people the bird when when they would cut me off. My pet peeve it construction--you set and wait in line and some idiot comes from the back of the line and tries to cut in front of you. I do not let them in. If I can wait--they can wait too.

Isn't that a sign of rage? No... don't answer that. In such situations I have thrown caution to the wind and put the ass end (or the whole half) of my car into the "no driving but I'll pass" lane -- with the exception of an exit nearby and motorcycles (friend was in a motorcycle accident; don't want to see that happen to anyone else). Not for myself, not because I care if a few cars pass me but because it creates gridlock toward the end of the line and I have been grateful to others who did the same thing, especially big trucks because no one is getting around them.

Exactly, no I do not get violent. I try to count to 10, or whatever, to calm down. It just is not worth the stress to let some impatient idiot that is trying cut me off, bother me. It can get bad in construction--when they keep cutting in front of you as you set in your hot car waiting. I have set for as long as 45 minutes while they keep coming and pushing in front of me. Then I get angy and I stop it by laying on my horn and putting my car where they want to go. Enough is enough!

In my 30 plus years of driving women have become increasingly more aggressive drivers but I will say that men are probably more prone to road rage than women although I think the gap is closing. Young male drivers are the most aggressive simply because you men are naturally aggressive since they have the most testosterone. It's biology.

I have seen some very obnoxious behavior in young women drivers, however, and notice that as women drivers age they become more aggressive. I have also noticed women who drive more expensive cars are more aggressive. Many of these women have achieved executive levels in the work place and are naturally more aggressive. I have worked with many women like this. There was a story that made national headlines several years ago about a woman driver in Alabama who was "wronged" in some way by another woman motorist, followed her to the point where the incident made it to the road side and the pursuer shot and killed the other woman. Road rage doesn't get more extreme than that.

I on the other hand am the opposite although I have mellowed over the years probably since I think more before I act. My wife is much more tolerant than I am and I have a very low tolerance for inept road manners and lack of regard for driving etiquette and the rules of the road. If I were a cop I would set records for issuing traffic tickets. I agree with some of the other posts here in that drivers ed should be mandatory in all 50 states and the drivers should pay for it.

Practice smart road manners. Use your damn turn signals! I use mine a lot even in parking lots. It's a matter of safety and courtesy. Pay attention and put down your stupid so called smart phones. If you can't wait another 3 minutes to get home to send an e-mail to someone on your computer you've got serious problems. Yield when you see a yield sign. Those signs don't get put in place simply because of road budget surpluses. If you park your ass in the far left lane on the interstate move it to the right. I never, ever hold others up. If they want to go faster that's their prerogative and I move my ass out of their way. Another good one to adhere to is don't pass someone only to slow abruptly to turn. That is rude and dangerous and nothing pisses me off more.

When I drive my cell phone is turned off and in my purse behind my drivers seat. I do not use my laptop in my car at all. I signal even late at night. I had a friend who use to run stop signs late at night because she said there were no cops around. I thought she was crazy. That makes for bad driving habits. I pull over in the slower lane when someone wants to drive faster. I have even pulled over and parked on side streets to let someone go by. I hate it when someone slams on their brakes to make a right or left turn without signaling. I try not to tailgate to avoid an accident happening. I have been driving since I was 12. My dad taught me.

That's because they are not hard wired to text and drive. They get uptight when a text comes through and they can't figure out how to reply and drive.

There's plenty of crazy drivers of both sexes. Just yesterday I was driving down one of the main lanes at a mega mall with a huge parking lot. I see this car about 100 yards off driving at an angle not in any lane heading in my direction at three times the speed any sane person would drive in a parking lot. I had to hit my brakes hard or this "lady" would have plowed into me. Of course she was looking down, texting, and after I gave her the horn to warn her, she gave me the finger as she cut across my lane. As she was doing that she just missed hitting another person pushing a shopping cart.

Your nice--I would have reported her to the nearest police station with a plate number. Maybe they would not do anything? But to me it would be worth a try. This woman is a selfish maniac and she could very well kill somebody.

I live in Illinois. Like in several other states the police have the option to repond or not to "accidents" and other traffic mishaps on public property, which the parking lot was.

I guess it depends how you define rage. As in my example the woman was clearly not caring about anyone else, decided to cut across a parking lot at an angle as a short cut to driving down the lanes, was texting, almost hit somebody pushing a shopping cart. Bad driving for sure, but the bigger issues is what causes some people to behave this way?

We shouldn't just single out woman. I've seen pleny of men drive recklessly and more than once I've seen some joker in road rage get enraged at me and followed me for over a a couple miles, pulling up along side of me and demand I get out and fight or something. Such hot heads are dangerous and probably don't have all their marbles.

Both sexes are guilty of texting while driving, drunk driving. It seems men more often get pissed-off over some real or preceived act some other driver did to them, like getting cut off, tail gating, not allowing them to pass while some women in least in my experience tend to do some pretty dumb things while driving. I've seen countless women messing with makeup or their hair, a few times trying to put on or remove a sweater while driving over 60 MPH and stuff like that.

I have an otherwise very quite almost timid cousin, that admits where she's behind the wheel she turns into a very agressive driver with a heavy foot, always speeding, she tailgates, runs through stop signs, the whole nine yards. When not driving she wouldn't hurt a fly. Odd.

Weaving through traffic. Running a red light. Tailgating. All signs of an aggressive driver and you may be surprised who's behind the wheel.
