PUBLIC OPINION > Time's Breastfeeding Cover Went Too Far

SodaHead Living 2012/05/11 13:00:00
Anyone who got a glimpse of the cover of the latest issue of Time magazine will have that image forever emblazoned in their fragile memory banks. It depicts Jamie Lynne Grumet, an attractive blonde mother, with her 3-year-old son standing on a chair in front of her, mouth latched onto her left breast. The caption is, "Are You Mom Enough?: Why attachment parenting drives some mothers to extremes." Regardless of the article's intent, the image is striking and, some feel, a little bit... provocative. We asked the public if the cover went too far.

Well, it didn't top Google trends because it was "perfectly acceptable." First of all, the kid's almost four. That alone is awkward to the max. What is he going to think when he gets a little bit older? Second of all, the photographer who took that also took pictures of three other mothers who are breastfeeding their older children. Must they use the attractive blonde for the cover? Some said it looks like an act of pedophilia at first glance. Defenders argued that the public has no right to dictate how she should raise her child.

Christians Can't Stand It

Typically, when religion and politics play a dividing role, politics has the stronger pull. This time, it was religion. Christians were 33% more likely to say the magazine went too far, presumably because of the image's borderline inappropriateness. Atheists, however, were pretty split.

Men Don't Mind as Much

Both genders sided against the cover, but men were significantly less likely to point fingers. It's tough to say exactly why that is, but some of the comments -- "I'm jealous!" "Can I take the 4-year-old's place?" "Crazy mom doesn't look half bad" -- offered a clue. Awkward? Certainly, for most. But for some guys, the kid is just an inconvenient obstruction.

Married Mind It a Lot

Age didn't seem to correlate, nor did parenthood, but relationship status had a big impact. Married voters were 11% more likely than singles to disapprove, and 20% more likely than unmarried voters in a relationship.

Not true, many women breastfeed until 3...even later. It is not about the mother. It is about allowing the child to naturally wean which is a slow process. Forced weaning, some feel is unhealthy both mentally and physically. In other cultures where the breast is not as sexualized, it is completely normal for a child to nurse until they are 3. Many nurse longer.

maybe in other countries it might be normal, but the way this female is posing is not very motherly.or modest.there are some things that should be kept in the privacy of their homes.yes a child needs to be weaned, sometimes they don't, but it doesn't take years.

Oh, I have a huge problem with the actual photo....that is not how a mother nurses any age child....its ridiculous and they were only posed like that to cause controversy which sucks. And while I don't think that nursing needs to be kept in the privacy of ones own home, I think it can be done discreetely in public and that it really needs to happen in public once a kid is around 3. I could see nursing a 2 year old in public as they are still very much babies and may, in some instances, need the comfort of nursing. That being said, I would not personally be bothered by seeing a 3 year old nurse in public.

Up to to 2 covered up and discreetly i might not have a problem, my almost two year old granddaughter is eating and uses a sippy cup.I still say that women that nurse the child past two have deep seated issues. now if they were so poor..I might understand... if there were not enough food.

She can raise her child however she wants.
... Though, putting your kid on the cover of a global magazine, attached to your boob, that's a bit scarring. Lol.

I personally think the biggest issue with the cover is the position the photographer has them in. If they were in a typical nursing position, such as sitting on a couch cuddling, I think it would look much more natural. People would still have issues with it though as our society is so oversexualized that the sight of a breast (unless it is on a bikini clad woman or a hollywood actress in a low cut dress) is frightening. lmao Seriously though, while we may have sexualized the breasts in our culture, that does not make breastfeeding a sexual act.....I have breastfed (and I was a breastfed child allowed to self wean....which didn't happen until 3ish) and there is nothing sexual about it.

    That's very true!
I don't see any problem with it, aside from the positioning as you've now pointed out. I self-weaned as well, and I was happy with mushy pees by the time I was 18 months old. Everyone is different.

We used to be neighbors with a woman who breastfed her son until he was about that age. It was awkward, to say the very least. he'd be laying across her lap, one of her boobs in his mouth, his legs dangling halfway to the ground.
I've said before on SH---if the kid's old enough to come up, put down the sippy cup and say "mommy, I'm hungry", it's time to stop breatsfeeding and give him a sandwich.

I think the women just can't let go, or they get some kind of a weird thrill out of it, Either way, it's not a good thing.
That kid's going to have some severe mommy issues when he gets older.

The people saying 'This is okay. It's perfectly natural' Um, well, sure it is natural, breastfeeding isn't a problem but when it's on a public magazine cover like that? It's disgusting. Nevermind the fact that poor kid is too old to be breasfeeding anyway.

That is vile. imagine the taunting at preschool next week. And that image will follow him throughout his life, even if the mom was willing to pose, she should NEVER have inflicted that on her child, and TIME is really wrong in putting that one the cover.

A much better photo would have been a baby nursing as the entire family slept in one giant bed. THAT would also show the message of the new parenting technique better.

    Poor, kid, poor, poor kid.

Oh my gosh, like preschoolers are going to be as judgemental as the American people. Sorry but children dont judge and arent nearly as rude and mean as adults. Before you post such judgemental remarks, why don't you all research it? It's easy to look at this photo in the wrong light, but researching it is a complety different thing.

I am all for breastfeeding babies, not preschoolers. Once a child is walking or heck even getting in teeth, I think breast feeding should stop. This child seems to old to be still nursing, I mean you would not seem him sucking on a bottle, so why on his mothers breast? If she insist on giving him mothers milk, time to drag out the breast pump.

    Woody
    ...like a lactating woman...
  • Laura Woody 2012/05/13 15:31:24

Have you looked at many lactating human breasts? Lactating women can vary greatly.....typically it is only the first few weeks after childbirth where breasts are engorged and it "looks" like a woman is lactating. Once a woman's milk regulates to her baby, her breasts become softer and as long as feeding continue she will not be engorged. Many women actually think they have "lost their milk" because of these feelings of emptiness....which is completely not accurate. So in conclusion....a lactating woman, looks like a woman...plain and simple.....she may, or may not have visibly fuller breasts, depending on her stage in lactation as well as her body in general. Everyone is different.
