PUBLIC OPINION > Stop Dyeing Baby Chicks!

SodaHead Living 2012/04/04 21:21:11
Dyeing eggs has been a tradition across different cultures for millenia, but dyeing the baby chicks that hatch from the eggs for Easter is a relatively new practice -- and animal rights activists are deeply concerned. It's generally agreed that the dyeing process is not harmful, but humane societies report large numbers of colored chicks being turned over or neglected because people tend to think of the animals as "toys" and not living creatures. We asked the public if the practice is acceptable.

dyeing chicks sodahead

They might be cute, but responses opposed to dyeing baby chicks were passionate and overwhelming. "Cruel," "unnatural," "horrible" and "evil" were a few words used to describe it, and that's just on the first page of comments. A lot of responses seemed to be gut reactions, but there was some legitimate debate on the issue, as well. Supporters emphasized the fact that it's not demonstrably harmful to the chicks, but others argued that the real danger is in treating them as a novelty. One commenter wrote, "In the end many of these will die, never to reach the time they shed their fluff and grow out their normal feathers."

Men Are More Likely to Say OK

The first demographic we noticed was gender. In the past, Gallup polls have shown that women are more likely to go for animal rights than men, and these results support that finding. Men were nearly twice as likely to support the practice, with one out of three voting "OK."

Dyeing Relationships

Relationship status showed an unexpected correlation. Most groups in that category showed about the same levels of opposition, but voters who were in an unmarried relationship were a good deal more likely to back the dyeing of chicks. Support from married voters was also relatively high.

Support From Smokers

Smokers and drinkers were also more likely to shrug it off, with smokers voting about as high as men at 32% and drinkers coming in at 25%. We could kind of see why a few drinks would make the idea a little more attractive. Without smokers or drinkers, the overall vote in favor of dyeing chicks would have been closer to 17%.

Animal activists.. lmfao. More concerned with baby chicks being treated as novelties as opposed to the thousands of unborn children murdered everyday.. Seems the priorities are a bit fu**** up.

“What irony that a society confronted with plastic bags filled with the remains of aborted babies should be more concerned about the problem of recycling the plastic.” ..

So what you're saying is that you've never had a marshmallow chick on a stick? : )
(I mentioned that those chickens on the kebabs were full grown chickens.)

Yeah I'd give a home to a dyed chick too. I'm pretty sure that the coloring would wear off as they loose their baby-fuzz feathers.

I guess if the dye is not dangerous to them and the family isn't too rough in handling them then it wouldn't be such an awful thing. Can't let the kids squeeze them though.

Yeah I was thinking about that when I wrote it, like not only the kids, but what it dad feels like taking his bad day out on some living thing when he gets home. Uh-oh, squished chick! Ooh, and the family pets...can't really trust the cat or dog around walking chicken either.

As cute as a box full of colorful baby chicks look, I'd say it's a little too much. It's like people buying rabbits for Easter only to neglect them later when the moment's over.

This is sad, not because the dye hurts the chickens, but because it is tacky and the little children these colors attract don't know how to handle baby chicks. Chicks die if they are dropped or even kept at room temperature. The idiots selling these don't care about the well being of the chicks. I don't understand how abortion came into this question and I wish people wouldn't stuff their opinion where ever they find room. But we was humans have the chance to educate ourselves and not go "OOOOO PURY COLORS" over live animals. This shows that some humans choose not to educate themselves and the argument that humans are better than animals is out of place on this question.

This is not a new practice, just a revived one. I can remember them when I was a kid, 60+ years ago. 'Dyeing' the baby chicks isn't cruel. It is the 'dieing' of the baby chicks in the hands of five year old kids that meets the 'cruelty' standard.

In my opinion all tribbles ought to be spayed at birth to prevent their accelerated reproductive abilities from getting out of hand.

Otherwise chicks will naturally shed their gosling feathers and move on to a productive and fulfilling life of egg laying and extra crispiness.

I own chickens and go to forums about them too. Many of the people on there will not sell any of their birds around easter and will go out to places that do this and hand out pamphlets telling you how to care for them.

Chicks NEED to be in temps around 90-95 degrees for their first week, and decreased 5 degrees every week that passes. They also need to be in a draft free places, because even a few minutes out of the brooder(place they are kept that contains them and keeps heat in) they get cold. They need feed from feed stores or a mixed grain that has the nutrients they need.

I am not saying the dye is bad, but the fact that they do it to sell them to people who won't know how to take care of them and die a miserable death is wrong.

Completely agreed. Personally it hasn't happened in the UK but I'd be waiting another week until people mysterious want to get rid of a novelty chick. =3 I'm more than happy to give a baby chick a good home...provided it's not a cockerel and it will lay =3 (or it's gonna end up as dinner).

Usually they are male though, unless you know your bird throws off a good female hatch rate, you will get males more than 50% of the time. Also the breed they use are generally Leghorns, they can be really flighty birds if you try to raise them.
  • Crypt_H... Tira 2012/04/07 21:32:20
    Crypt_Heart
It's less to do with the hatch rate...sure genetic plays a role, but you would be surprised how many hens a good friend of mine churns out just by altering the temperature in the incubation period.

But very good points nevertheless. ^o^
  • Tira Crypt_H... 2012/04/12 05:06:15

Temperature and humidity only plays a part in development. Birds have X and Y chromosomes, and environmental effects cannot change that.
It might be easy to confuse them with animals where temperature determines sex, but it only effects cold blooded animals. Otherwise there would be no discussion over genetics with them because it wouldn't matter, if it was temperature that determined sex. Also, if it did, then big commercial farms wouldn't gas and grind up day old male chicks if all they had to do was adjust the temperature during incubation.
Out of all my hatches I have had more males than females. Always. And with incubation temperature, your choices vary from 99, a bit low, 99.5 is the usual temperature people will tell you and 100.

I'm not saying she hasn't had the old male crop up but her batch is more often than not dominantly female. *shrug* As far as I'm aware big commercial companies that want to produce chickens for either eating or laying do change the temperature.

They're cute alright. However, I can see why animal rights groups would object to them. If it's moving and cheeping, I'd find it rather difficult to mistake it for a toy but that's me.

I mean, people don't go around dying themselves different colors. so why do this to an animal, just have them wear colorful ribbons or collars around their necks.

Your point? So some people you know played a prank on you.... thats fine, so long as it is fine with you. If you wanted, you could have filed charges, but you chose not to because the people that pulled the prank are probably friends of yours. And you can at least comprehend the situation taking place, while these animals most likely can not.
