PUBLIC OPINION > Stop Dyeing Baby Chicks!

SodaHead Living 2012/04/04 21:21:11
Dyeing eggs has been a tradition across different cultures for millenia, but dyeing the baby chicks that hatch from the eggs for Easter is a relatively new practice -- and animal rights activists are deeply concerned. It's generally agreed that the dyeing process is not harmful, but humane societies report large numbers of colored chicks being turned over or neglected because people tend to think of the animals as "toys" and not living creatures. We asked the public if the practice is acceptable.

dyeing chicks sodahead

They might be cute, but responses opposed to dyeing baby chicks were passionate and overwhelming. "Cruel," "unnatural," "horrible" and "evil" were a few words used to describe it, and that's just on the first page of comments. A lot of responses seemed to be gut reactions, but there was some legitimate debate on the issue, as well. Supporters emphasized the fact that it's not demonstrably harmful to the chicks, but others argued that the real danger is in treating them as a novelty. One commenter wrote, "In the end many of these will die, never to reach the time they shed their fluff and grow out their normal feathers."

Men Are More Likely to Say OK

The first demographic we noticed was gender. In the past, Gallup polls have shown that women are more likely to go for animal rights than men, and these results support that finding. Men were nearly twice as likely to support the practice, with one out of three voting "OK."

Dyeing Relationships

Relationship status showed an unexpected correlation. Most groups in that category showed about the same levels of opposition, but voters who were in an unmarried relationship were a good deal more likely to back the dyeing of chicks. Support from married voters was also relatively high.

Support From Smokers

Smokers and drinkers were also more likely to shrug it off, with smokers voting about as high as men at 32% and drinkers coming in at 25%. We could kind of see why a few drinks would make the idea a little more attractive. Without smokers or drinkers, the overall vote in favor of dyeing chicks would have been closer to 17%.

Animal activists.. lmfao. More concerned with baby chicks being treated as novelties as opposed to the thousands of unborn children murdered everyday.. Seems the priorities are a bit fu**** up.

“What irony that a society confronted with plastic bags filled with the remains of aborted babies should be more concerned about the problem of recycling the plastic.” ..

The dye doesnt at all hurt the chicks, so what exactly is everyone's problem? If you're worried about small children hurting them, how about kittens being strangled by over-enthusiastic hugs?

I think over all, this is just a silly waste of time. there are so many more important things going on in the world!

Why worry about a handful of multi-coloured baby chickens when basic human rights remain infringed upon all over the world.

It doesn't hurt the chicks ... its cute as a button ... and it disappears when the feathers come in ... what is the problem other than another entitled group making mountains out of molehills.

Meh, I don't see a problem with it. I don't know how it would hurt a baby chick any more than the other animals.

I have dyed chicks when I was a kid. I looked forward to them in fact.

You city people keep your dogs on leashes? Isn't restraining an animal against it's will cruel?

There are considerable more problems in America that demand our attention than this.
But rest assured if our economy collapses due to unsustainable debt, there will not be any free money to dye or buy colored chicks.

    There, problem solved

I can see it being a problem if there was no place to raise them, but since many Americans lack common sense....well there you go.

When the chicks started to get feathers, they sure did look funny.

That is not right at all dyeing eggs is way different then dyeing a baby chick. A baby chick is a living animal and that really looks like it could harm them.

It probably shouldn't be done, it's not natural. But does this mean that none of us that are against the coloring of baby chick never consume chicken kabobs? (That's baby chicks grown up on a stick.) peeps on a stick

I can say that I for one have never had one of those... (and won't, I tend to like 'kebabs' which often require much larger amounts of chicken meat)

But I would be up for adopting a dyed chick if it were going free to a good home =P
