PUBLIC OPINION > Smoking in Cars Is Your Right

SodaHead Living 2011/11/21 16:00:00
The United Kingdom is cracking down on tobacco one rule at a time. The British Medical Association's Board of Science has proposed to "achieve a tobacco-free society by 2035," and as part of the push they're trying to pass a ban on smoking in cars. While doctors support a total ban on smoking in cars, some have suggested only banning smoking when there are children or passengers in the car.

So far, there have been no serious pushes for anything like this in America, but the idea could very well ignite sparks in the States. But when we took the proposal to SodaHeads to find out what they thought, there didn't seem to be much more than some light kindling in the crowd.

Should It Be Illegal to Smoke in Your Own Car?

smoking

57% Reject Smoking Bans for Cars

We felt it would be appropriate to separate the "yes" vote into the three options the U.K. was considering, but even then, the "no" votes outnumbered all of the bans combined. For the most part, it was a simple issue of what many considered to be unnecessary government involvement. One clever commenter wrote, "Government needs to butt out!!"

As for the different ban proposals, a ban on smoking with children in the car was definitively more popular than either a total ban or a ban on smoking with adult passengers. We also discovered that smoking with children in the car is already outlawed in several Australian territories, though an Australian commenter noted, "People still do it anyway."

chart

Nonsmokers Step In

While smokers were obviously opposed to the ban in large numbers, the bans still failed with nonsmokers by 2%. One respondent wrote, "I have never smoked and never will. That being said, who am I to dictate what someone else can or cannot do in their own vehicle? If it's not illegal, it is none of my or anyone else's business." (Side note: There were four smokers who voted in favor of a complete ban.)

Kids Call It Quits

It looks like kids don't want their parents smoking with them in the car -- teen voters were actually in favor of the ban. Only 37% of them thought it should be completely legal, while the rest were divided between the different types of bans. Most of them opted for the lighter rule: Only ban it when they're around.

Lawmakers Like the Ban

Broken down by career industry, the strongest supporters of some kind of ban on smoking in the car were those who listed themselves in the legal field. Of the five voters who work in legal, only one of them rejected the ban. The other four were split between a kids-only band and a total ban.

You are dead on with that statement. Also, do they think that smokers ride around with all the windows up? How dumb would that be...

I always thought that the Internet would open a lot of people's eyes due to the ability to access raw non-partisan data. I was so wrong. People don't want anything that inteferes with their belief systems. No matter how wrong some people are they seem to revel in it. I always had a low opinion of the human race the Internet succesfully managed to lower it further

I've come across some amazing people on the internet but like you I am often left feeling less inspired in the human race than I once thought possible. This is why we simply must try to remain patient and point out the obvious when and where we can. I have come across some people who are rather hot headed and easy to jump to conclusions that have turned out to be real gems. Keep the faith!

I am not a smoker and I do agree with making it illegal to smoke in a car with children but when it's just adults it is their right. It's much better than smoking in public. Guess no matter where you go there is a fight for rights everywhere.

Ar you going to object when I start telling you how to raise your kids, what to feed them, and what activities they can participate in? Soccer, football, and baseball can be dangerous. The xbox makes them fat. You are killing them with all the products you use with corn syrup.

You raise your kids as you see fit, I raise my kids as I see fit.

Unless they are being abused or molested, you have no right to tell me what to do with/around my kids

I as well as any doctor would agree that secondhand smoke is more dangerous compared to what you have mentioned. Yes I do agree with you but you must understand once more and more people start complaining, and or are abusing their rights, rights will be taken away, not my fault or yours. It's called common sense. Not going to get in to a heated argument over common sense and I am sure you are a great parent so I can't say anything negative, as I don't know you.

If a right os taken away it is our fault. We have to stand up to government.

Bit once they dictate what you do in your car , how long until they say no smoking in your home. Then they will say only 1 6pack of coke a week, because it causes your kids to get fat. Then you can only watch certain tv programs becse the violence and nudity are not good for kids.

Once you start down the hill, it becomes impossible to get back to the top. Never start the slide to begin with, we are already 3/4 way to ghe bottom

I have to agree with you, I have seen how the Govt is stepping in on way too much, I just hate to say smoking is a concern and would be nice if it were strictly in the home or car and not near children. I am a mother and as a wife who's husband smokes it is kind of a pet peeve. Mind you I am an ex smoker. It is too dangerous.

I'm torn. I don't like smoking and I do not like being behind a car that is smoking so I'm not really sure what to say. I do believe it is a persons right to smoke in their car but I don't think other people should have to suffer because of it.

The people who smoke are too stupid to realize (or don't care) that it is killing them, so why would they care if it is causing health problems for passengers in their cars? If I am going someplace with someone and they are a smoker, I will often drive just so that I can tell them no smoking in my car.

I remember when smoking was allowed in government buildings, airplanes, restaurants, public transportation. What happened to that? Now you can't even smoke in parks in some states. And now they want to take away our cars too? If they're going to do all that, then why don't they , or big tobacco, sponsor the cure for smokers to quit that is so expensive that alot of us can't afford it. you might say that if we can afford to smoke, etc. But smoking only costs 5 dollars a pop. those treatments are a lot more than that all at once. That's the difference between buying a new car with cash or payments. It just pisses me off to be hooked on something legal and feel like the government is pulling the rug out from under me!

As long as there isn't someone in your car with you that objects, I don't think it's that bad? it's illegal where I live to begin with, but I would really appreciate the consideration of whomever's smoking to not do it if I'm also in the car. being a severe asthmatic, the smoke is highly detrimental to my health, windows rolled down or not.

I could also mention the time my shirt caught fire from the ashes of a cigarette flying back in the window and hitting me, but that's another story for another day.

I don't smoke however the government shouldn't be allowed to tell you what you do in your own car.
That being said I hope adults would be smart enough not to smoke in their cars with little children or people with asthma riding with them.

I imagine lighting a cigarette while driving is pretty dangerous, as is anything that takes your attention away from the road even for short periods of time. So perhaps if anything they should look at smoking while driving.

How about those CD players, radios and computers in cars? Better ban them as distractions too.

Well its not quite the same and I'm not saying they should ban smoking in a car, was saying that probably that is a greater risk to people and there is more to the argument than just passive smoking. Common sense really should apply - i.e. if you are on a highway then maybe wait until you light up, if you have kids in your car then you don't smoke, etc.. In the UK you can get into trouble for drinking a can of soda while driving or pretty much anything if its seen to be distracting enough (I.e. Driving without due care and attention).

My mother waits until she's at a stop light/sign to look for, and light up, a cigarette, normally, unless she has someone else at hand to get it and do it for her. I'd imagine, given the number of accidents caused by cigarettes (not purely distraction, which is most often cellphone use/texting, grooming, eating/drinking, etc.), most smokers have at least that much common sense.

So long as the they're only person being hurt why not let them smoke in their cars? But the people who subject their kids to secondhand smoke in the car are inconsiderate idiots and bad parents in my opinion. Although I wish they would give out 100$ tickets to the morons who throw out their butts or even empty their ashtrays on the streets. piles of cigarette butts on roads

Smoking in your own car is and should be your own business. Now, I feel that if you have children it would be wise not to smoke in the car with them, as you know second hand smoke is worse than the first drag. All in all it would be best if people didn't smoke, but still it is their right.

I think we should have the right to do what we want in our own homes and vehicles as long as we are not bothering others. This is just another ploy to get more revenue by ticketing those who are caught, and by attorneys who will represent the smoker in a court of law.

I only support a ban on smoking in cars simply because it can be considered a distraction that can increase the chance of getting in an accident and potentially hurting someone else.
