Public Opinion Says Teaching 11-Year-Olds About Condoms Is Not OK [INFOGRAPHIC]

SodaHead Infographics 2011/08/30 22:00:00
Last week we asked SodaHeads if 11-year-olds should be taught how to use a condom. It was a close call, but public opinion suggests that kids should be a wee bit older before getting that part of "the talk."

If you missed out on the original story, here's what sparked our interest:

But it looks like times have changed -- in New York City at least. The metropolitan city is reforming the way they look at sex education and will begin implementing a more controversial curriculum starting this year.

What does that mean, exactly? Well, for starters, public middle schools and high schools in the city will be given lessons on how to successfully use a condom and a talk on the appropriate age for sexual activity.

It was a close call this time around, and the break-down was a bit more complicated than previous questions we've looked at.

Religion and politics broke down as expected, but age threw a wrench into the system at every turn. There was even a strange disagreement between engaged and married people. Weird.

Let's dive.

I'll repeat my answer from the original question:

    1) Safe sex ed is better than abstinence only (or no sex ed) in every way

    2) No matter what you think or want, kids have sex earlier and earlier

    3) Knowing is half the battle, and it's always better to be safe

    4) Teaching them doesn't mean they're actually going to have sex, only that they'll know what to do when they do.

What's so bad about telling kids to use condams instead getting an std or having a kid

You don't teach young kids about something they shouldn't be involved with. Don't plant the seed and they won't want to try it out.....

No WAY!!! It's NOT okay! When I was 11 (in the 80s) I had to ask my mum what a condom even WAS! I was innocent and childlike and didn't think beyond kissing up to about age 16... didn't DO anything beyond kissing til older than that! LET KIDS BE KIDS ffs, why this big rush for them to grow up!?
Btw: Here in the UK, we give out free protection to underage kids... and we have the highest rate of underage pregnancy in Europe! So it does NOT work to give youngsters all this information!

You're never too young to learn anything that's being taught to you for your own good. But you can be too young to It it to practice. So if your kid is eleven and having sex, that's your problem, not the school, and you should be glad they at least know how to do it right.

If I teach you the dangers of fire does that mean I'm trying to persuade you to play with it? NO! I'm 15 and ive had sex ed classes since fifth grade and I can guarantee you its not like they bring in a basket of sex toys and a prostitute and send us off to a motel. GROW up! In this advanced era we live in sex is still a taboo in most households and if parents wont teach their kids about sex, who will? Sex ed is to teach us the facts its up to you to teach your kid the morals. So if you have a slutty 11 year old Who's having sex that's YOUR problem not the class. And if your a good parent and you've raised your kid right, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

I agree with you on that its never late to learn about it. Its better if the parents tell them than if they had to be tough themselfs by curosity.

Just because a handful of atheistic folks have chosen to denigrate Christians by perverting a known symbol of the faith is NO reason for Sodahead to use that insulting graphic to typify ALL atheists (and offend Christians in the process).

As much as I prefer children be taught abstinence once they reach puberty I don't see any reason nowadays that 11 year olds shouldn't be taught the basics of sex ed including condom use. I once felt very differently but I'm seeing children growing up physically a lot faster than my generation. We've all heard the stories about tweenagers (10 to 12 year olds) getting pregnant. Last year a nine year old gave birth in this country!

When our son went to middle school they had sock hops. A silly thing but when I went to pick him up I walked past several kids (12 and 13 in age) making out so heavily that I wanted to hose them down or give them a hotel room key. It was that bad! Worse the teachers/chaperones completely ignored them!

Our daughter, age nine brought home a new friend the other day. A little girl a foot taller than ours and fully formed. And no, I'm not going to describe her...just take my word for it. My first thought was she was way too old to be playing with our daughter. Then I found out she was only 10! WTH? Her father already had to buy this girl some upper garments, and I'm not talking about trainers either. Yet she was obviously just as mature for her age as my daughter, which isn't saying much. A girl in a woman's body playing with Barbies. I almost cried ...

Face it people, whether it be animal hormones in our food supply or natural selection, our children are arriving at puberty much quicker these days than even thirty years ago. And they don't have the tools to deal with this sudden change so early. Throw in a heavy dose of sexually charged MTV, the internet and lingerie models on prime time and our children don't stand a chance!

Yes! Teach them about condom use, about STDs, AIDS and babies!

How ignorant are you? I am a Christian and I believe that we need sex ed in our schools because even though I'm shooting for sex after marriage I know most kids certainly aren't. So how can You blame it on religion when me AND my arents are Baptist Christians and we talk about sex bluntly and civily. Clearly religion is not the problem.
  • Mark Barbara 2011/08/31 17:55:29

Because most of Christianity, Muslims, etc are not as open about talking with their children about sex as you and your group.

Well then maybe you should choose your Words more carefully because we're not all the same I'm sure you wouldn't lIke it if I generalized athiests and said How mean and evil they are which I wouldn't because I know that there are athiests who respectfully disagree with other people.
  • Mark Barbara 2011/08/31 18:09:49

The difference there is that in this case, I am correct. Those who do oppose this, oppose this in the name of their religion. That doesn't mean it's your religion. I think I chose my words rather well. I can't help it if you think that any mention of the word "religion" means that I'm talking about your religion.
  • Barbara Mark 2011/08/31 18:15:21
    Barbara
Its just that the problem isn't religion of any type and I used mine as an example. Some people don't want their kids to take sex ed simply because they're uncomfortable or because they strongly believe its their job not the schools. And to those people I say its perfectly fine to opt your kid out but others need it so it cant be taken out as a whole.
  • Mark Barbara 2011/09/01 07:06:46
    Mark
Yeah, I'm fine with parents opting their kids out of sex ed classes, but if their kid comes home pregnant, they only have themselves to blame. After all, most of those who would opt their kids out of this, only teach their kids the failed abstinence-only education. XD

I take "public opinion" with a grain of salt.

For a very, very long time, "public opinion" said the earth was flat, and that the sun was a god that flew around it ... and those who disagreed were beaten, imprisoned and sometimes killed.

Just because a lot of people agree on something, doesn't mean it's right. Then again, it doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong, either ... but like Samuel Clemens once said, "It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s the things you know that just ain’t so."
  • Artist NhytFahl 2011/08/31 14:37:52

BTW, the flat earth thingy is a myth...people knew the earth was round as far back as Abraham.

Maybe you should think about taking modern mythology with a grain of salt as well since it has been shown numerous times that historically there was never any acceptance of a "flat-earth" model, it is nothing but a myth.

I don't think 11 is too young thats when i learned about it. I think they should teach this to 11+ only cause this last year we had two girls a 11 yr old and 12 yr old that got pregnant. It's wrong in the first place for them to have sex but maybe if they knew more about this stuff they wouldn't have kids.

I've posted at length about this topic and used the following tenets as a basis for my argument against such banal education.

    1. STDS have been steadily, alarmingly increasing every year. I guess sex ed isn't addressing those issues enough.

    2. Condoms are not as safe as once thought.

    3. Children encouraged to lose innocence early on help propagate a miserable existence, hence, teen suicide as third largest cause for death amongst them today.

    4. Destroy the children, destroy the culture. Examples: The Muslim, North Korean, etc teaching hate to toddlers on up. Hitler Youth. Etc.

    5. Fatherless homes. 70% in the Black Community. 58% Hispanic, 23% Caucasian.

    6. Evolution as only reason for origin. If no real purpose, then no real universal morality. If no real universal morality than no God. If no God then no authority to demand moral ethics.

    7. 50 Million babies aborted. Human life reduced to a mistake easily taken care of.

Eleven is too darned young unless it is the parent doing the teaching! They can, and will, instill their own values and outlook to the child. Mass sex education is ridiculous!

In sex ed you don't learn about values, you learn about facts. If you don't want Your kid in sex ed go educate yourself and then teach your kids about every std their symptoms and if they can be cured teach them about peer pressure how to use the condom right every body Part of both male and female reproductive systems and how they work etc. unless you're capable you're kids better off in sex ed
