Public Opinion Says Teachers Should Get Paid $60,000 [INFOGRAPHIC]

SodaHead Infographics 2011/09/06 22:37:08
Last week we asked SodaHeads if they thought teachers should make $60,000 a year, and after nearly a week of voting we've got the results.

We asked about teacher salaries after Secretary of Education Arne Duncan suggested teachers should receive a $60,000 salary to start out, with the potential to make up to $150,000 a year.

Compared to what teachers currently make -- just over $50,000 on average -- a hike like that could mean serious investments from an already over-burdened government. But it looks like a strong majority is still in favor of going along with the salary boost.

We thought this would be the perfect question to dive into for today's infographic, so we took a deeper look at SodaHead votes and scoured the Internet for an in-depth look at relative salaries.

Let's dive.

I think those with diplomas said "No" more than kids in school because those with diplomas found out the quality/results of their education.

I believe good teachers should get paid good money -- and bad teachers should get fired.

Unfortunately, our public employees unions prohibit either -- the unions want all teachers to make a lot of money and that just bankrupts the system and punishes the kids.

"A janitor most likely dropped out of high school". That opinion is so judgemental that I could never take anything you say seriously.

we need janitors and believe it or not most do it by choice, they should be commended not degraded by children. Not everyone can have a "good" job, not everyone can afford an education. What about the highly skilled workers who risk life and limb on a daily basis, where is their 60,000 a year?

What 'highly skilled workers who risk life and limb on a daily basis' might these be? And who would want to be a caretaker?

That was a large part of my objection on the original poll. Our economy is dead. This is definitely not the time to talk about a significant pay raise, across the board, to a group of people that are mostly paid through tax dollars in order to "take a risk" (as the original poll phrased it). Their average is above the average for the U.S. and most work only 8 months a year.

I am okay with excellent teachers being able to make more, but not across the board increases of this amount. Break the unions. Base pay on merit.

I said on the original poll that Pay should be based on where the teacher work since the cost of living is different everywhere you go.

I also questioned the involvement of the Federal Government in Education. Since the States and Localities already Tax for Education I see it as a States Right issue.

However if you want to make education a Federal Program. I suggest they get paid just like our military does, directly by the Federal Government, and quit taxing on the State and Local level.

That would also mean they would have to give up their unions, and let's add in moving to a new school every 2 to 4 years. Unfortunately they would probably get paid even less than they do now, just look at the pay scale for the people who go out and put their lives on the line, and you will see what I mean.

As long as you can get rid of the unions so that teachers who don't deserve to be paid that much, hell, don't deserve to be teachers in the first place, can be fired.

The Daily Deep Dish is so fine! I said no for beginners (teachers not dishers.) But who is going to watch those sweet, well behaved children from such wonderful families for peanuts?

Most teachers make $ 60 grand a year, plus benefits, including the ability NOT TO GET FIRED ! It however, takes a few years to get there, just like most professionals need to put in time before making the money. Besides, using kids as a medium for paying teachers more should wait until they become taxpayers. Theres more, but you need to read my other comments in this blog.

That's a really common response. How do teachers teach nasty, rotten, spoiled, & neglected children that are sent to the schools they work in?
  • Kris Sa... Gloria 2011/09/07 20:52:00

In my opinion, focus on the good kids, if the bad ones want to screw up their life, forget them, teachers shouldn't waste time and resources that could be going to kids that want to be productive citizens.
  • Gloria Kris Sa... 2011/09/07 20:56:55

That kind of negates your first response about paying good teachers well. If they skip the crummy kids then they will be accused of not teaching them?

I totally agree that teachers should be paid.. Let them make as much money as possible, but pay them on a performance base scale with bonuses, overachievements, etc.. However get rid of the unions and if they can't perform, they are on probation, can't perform again and they are let go.. It's ridiculous how hard it is to fire teachers... If there is an investigation, they are put on paid leave for years... It's ridiculous.. Until there's major changes in our entire educational system, our children are just going to keep suffering... It's not like our system is working.. An entire overhaul needs to happen and it needs to happen fast..

If we went back to teaching the basics and stopped using school to indoctrinate our kids to be liberals we could pay teacher 60k and save money too.

Well I say this depends on the grade level, and our current economic Standing. That is the thing about being a public employee (I know of private schools, those salaries vary too much, so I am putting that aside) our nations economy effects you more, and will effect you faster than a private employee.

But I think Teachers should get 60k and up if they have a masters degree in their field of education, and have proved that they can do their job.

Maybe 40-50k as a starting wage, and how about we have the ability for them to work their way up the wage ladder.

Right? I mean 60k is an awful lot to pay someone working the kindergarten/ first grade circuit where they are basically glorified babysitters. No offense to them, its an important job, ad I am sure t here is more teaching involved than it initially appears, but still.
  • moonchild thy-lady-x 2011/09/07 09:35:53

And there is the problem. Kinder and 1st grade are foundation classes, without them children will not succeed as they move up grade to grade. They are not glorified babysitters. They are teaching the children things parents fail to. I was disgusted when my older son went into Kindergarten, half of his class didn't know how to pick letters out of the alphabet. They could sing the song, but when it came to looking at the letters they were lost. They couldn't count to 10, let alone 100 like I made sure my son could do. They didn't know the sounds of the letters either. Many didn't know basic shapes.

Kindergarten teachers have to get kids prepared, and are usually behind from day one because of lazy ass parents who think it's nothing more than a babysitting service.

My son learned to read in Kindergarten and is not almost 2 grades ahead on his reading level, in second grade.

    Good teachers teach.

See, the school system I live in wont even allow you into kinder unless you can count to a hundred, tie your shoe, recognize your own written name, and recite your address. There were other things too, I just can't remember them all. I imagine it has something to do with colors and basic shapes.

I understand that first/kinder are important building blocks, teaching kids to sit and listen when they are supposed to amongst otherthings....60k just sounds like an awful lot to pay someone who mostly does organized crafts and light reading to kids all day.
  • Freedom... moonchild 2011/09/07 23:46:29

Yes, they are supposed to teach foundations to kids, but they usually do not. My neice went into kindergarten, and they said she had to know her ABCs, basic reading, how to count to 100, and basic interaction skills before she could attend. At least that is what my sister told me, and she usually is pretty accurate.

There aren't any bad teachers. Some aren't as effective as others, but that doesn't make them bad. The whole package $40K, pension at 55, 15 weeks of vacation, 8 to 3:30 workday Monday through Friday is fair.
    They can't get more anywhere..
