PUBLIC OPINION > Real-Life Barbie Is Kind of Freaky

SodaHead Celebs 2012/04/24 22:00:00
Valeria Lukyanova, a 21-year-old woman from Russia, is often referred to as a "real-life Barbie" because, well, she kind of looks like Barbie. The problem is, as many have speculated, if Barbie were real she would look almost inhuman. Lukayanova has wide hips, a busty top, an insanely thin waist, long blonde hair, perfect powdery makeup, and baby blue eyes. It's obviously not something she was born with, which is why many are either offended or freaked out by her plastic-perfect Barbie appearance.

More often than not, voters were a little bit freaked out. Some went so far as to call her "terrifying." Others accused her of making them "feel ugly and fat," and some worried she might be anorexic. There was a surprising amount of people who found her attractive, though. Several guys (and a few girls) said they "want one to play with." However, even supporters expressed concern over the size of her waist.

Terrified Teens

Teens were more likely than any other age group to be freaked out by Lukyanova, and their comments contained way more question marks and exclamation points. (Then again, don't they always?) Teens are also more prone to struggle with their body image, as they're still in high school. In fact, the high school demographic was a little more freaked out than teens.

Men Don't Mind

Male voters were less likely to be freaked out by her. As unnatural as it is, comments made it clear that she appealed to men. Some men, not all of them. Females were probably more freaked out because the controversy surrounding Lukyanova's appearance is directly related to body image.

Liberals Don't Like It

Liberals had the strongest opinion by quite a bit, even compared to non-political categories. Nearly three-fourths of them were freaked out by real-life Barbie, compared to just a third of conservatives. It could be that liberalism is often associated with equality, and Ms. Lukyanova is hardly keeping her head down.

I am not trying to be rude, I am just curious, if people don't think she looks natural, why do they want to do her?

The same reason a really fat chick looks sexy at 11PM on St. Patrick's day. Besides, people have sex with plastic blow up dolls all the time. At least this one doesn't require batteries or lube.. right?

Refuse to buy into such nonsense. If less girls tried to be "perfect" less companies would try to market it.

I wish it were that simple. I watch girls as young as 12 getting manicures and and spray tans for pagents. My daughter attends school with some of these girls. They wear gobs of make up and there parents sign them up for pagent after pagent. I do not agree with it but the way this world is can't see what could be done about it.

You can't really, short of blowing up advertising companies. What you CAN do is refuse to adhere to the media. Be different, and talk to your daughter about individuality. Perhaps you can tell her how beautiful she is already, and that it's better to be imperfect and real than to be perfect and fake.

My daughter is a tom boy! I have to beg her to wear a dress to church on Sundays. lol. She is very comfortable with who she is and i am lucky that she does not concern herself with appearance and instead worries more about her grades and when she will find time to find a new species of frog!! lol i am a lucky mama!

That's good news. If only more people were as confident. But that won't happen until media loses influence.

There is makeup there it's just really well done. That and contacts make her eyes look bigger, and almost certainly photoshop. I'll agree she is naturally better looking than the other girl, and I don't know if she's had cosmetic surgery, but she's still pretty artificial.
