PUBLIC OPINION > Real-Life Barbie Is Kind of Freaky

Valeria Lukyanova, a 21-year-old woman from Russia, is often referred to as a "real-life Barbie" because, well, she kind of looks like Barbie. The problem is, as many have speculated, if Barbie were real she would look almost inhuman. Lukayanova has wide hips, a busty top, an insanely thin waist, long blonde hair, perfect powdery makeup, and baby blue eyes. It's obviously not something she was born with, which is why many are either offended or freaked out by her plastic-perfect Barbie appearance.

More often than not, voters were a little bit freaked out. Some went so far as to call her "terrifying." Others accused her of making them "feel ugly and fat," and some worried she might be anorexic. There was a surprising amount of people who found her attractive, though. Several guys (and a few girls) said they "want one to play with." However, even supporters expressed concern over the size of her waist.
Terrified Teens
Teens were more likely than any other age group to be freaked out by Lukyanova, and their comments contained way more question marks and exclamation points. (Then again, don't they always?) Teens are also more prone to struggle with their body image, as they're still in high school. In fact, the high school demographic was a little more freaked out than teens.

Male voters were less likely to be freaked out by her. As unnatural as it is, comments made it clear that she appealed to men. Some men, not all of them. Females were probably more freaked out because the controversy surrounding Lukyanova's appearance is directly related to body image.

Liberals had the strongest opinion by quite a bit, even compared to non-political categories. Nearly three-fourths of them were freaked out by real-life Barbie, compared to just a third of conservatives. It could be that liberalism is often associated with equality, and Ms. Lukyanova is hardly keeping her head down.
