PUBLIC OPINION > Prostitution Should Be Legal

Living 2012/07/26 21:00:00
The Global Commission on HIV and the Law issued a report suggesting that nations eliminate laws banning "consensual sex work" -- i.e., prostitution. It's an interesting claim coming from an organization aimed at preventing sexually transmitted disease, but their hope is that legalization would lead to regulation and safer practice. We asked the public if prostitution should be legal.

sodahead prostitutes

Nearly two-thirds of the population admitted that it thinks prostitution should be legal. However, it's important to understand that this doesn't necessarily reflect the public's moral opinion of the topic. The question is explicitly legal. Most people think it should be a choice. One commenter wrote, "By legalizing it, mandatory health screenings can be required for the safety of the prostitute and the buyer. Trying to keep it illegal only keeps the thing in the dark where roaches like to live. Bring it into the light of public attention and those roaches will scurry."

Men Are More Willing

Should we be surprised that men were more likely to support the legalization of prostitution? Of course, the Global Commission was not referring solely to female prostitution, but it is more often thought of as a service targeted at men. Actually, the difference wasn't that big. Men were only 11% more supportive than women. Women were still more likely to support legalization than refuse it.

Christian Resistance

Religion and politics provided the biggest defenders of criminalization -- Christians and conservatives. Both demographics were significantly less supportive than the rest. Since religion and politics are often closely related, it's probably not too much of a leap to assume that religion drives this one. Allowing the nation to embrace something that Christians consider to be immoral is a tough call to make.

Older Voters Are For It

Typically, older voters respond similarly to conservative voters. In this case, that means we would predict the older a voter got the less willing they would be to support the legalization of prostitution. Not so. Actually, most age groups were relatively similar. The only one that stood out noticeably was the 55-64 group, and they were 11% more likely to support legalization.

Seriously Christians, you see transactional sex between two consenting adults as worse then the rapes, abuse and murders that you are allowing to happen by keeping it illegal...

Women in sex work cannot go to the police about rapes or abuse because of their profession and that is plain and simple WRONG.

so many people would benefit from it, instead of some poor 12 year old girl being sexually abused and forced into that lifestyle, they'll have a legal adult who CHOOSES to have sex for money, also the prostitutes should have a licence a monthly test and have the option to manage themselves so they won't be taken advantage of. Plus if a guy needs a fast Fock, he won't have to pretend to like a girl just to get in her pants.

en mi opinión debe ser legal la prostitución, pero bajo un estricto control sanitario de las personas que se dedican a esa actividad, inclusive se les podría cobrar un impuesto cuyo importe se aplique al control sanitario y preventivo.

Strange that it is illegal to sell what is legal to give away.
The medical testing would only prove that they were STD free at one point in time which could change in the next hour.

One problem with prostitution as it is now is the hookers and the pimps having unsavory "connections"; if prostitution is going to be legal all over, that has to change.

Two adults meet and have sex 20 minutes later: it's odd, but relatively few people give a damn.

One "tips" the other: ARREST THEM!

I too feel it would cut down on the spread of diseases, it works in Amsterdam, and also the prostitutes would be better protected, not everybody was afforded with an education enough to make enough money to live the straight and narrow, as well as the its thier decision to do what they choose with thier bodies.

I see no reason not to legalise it. It's the oldest profession in the World. And it will continue no matter what.

Yes already. The worlds oldest profession should be legalized and taxed. Hey, more money AND jobs. Plus, legal brothels health check their girls weekly for diseases and they practice safe sex, so that would cut down on STD's and keep girls safer in a controlled environment. Why not? It's not going to quit!

Thats probably the only way the politicians would legalize it. Only if they got a cut. Sort of puts politicians on the same level as pimps. Which , in reality, they are any way.

If you disagree with prostitution, then don't engage in it. That's all. You don't have to punish those who do things you think are sexually immoral, just do what you think is right and be an example for others to follow.

If the goal is to lower disease transmission and increase the safety of the participates, legalization is a good way to do that.

Regarding Christians- the Bible speaks of the role of the "temple prostitute" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

so there is a tradition of prostitution even in that text. (HOWEVER, AS ONE MEMBER NOTED BELOW, IT WAS NOT SANCTIONED BY GOD AS I ORIGINALLY POSTED.) This is not something new. It is an old issue that keeps getting re-heated.

Legalize it, regulate it, and treat it like any other business. You might even see the numbers drop. Often times people only want what they can't have.

On a related note, I wonder how many women will cope to using a male escort???

The information I mentioned speaks of there being temple prostitutes. It states that these women/men were used as sexual sacrifices of sorts. YOU ARE CORRECT IT IS NOT SOMETHING VIEWED FAVORABLY. Thank you for that correction.
