PUBLIC OPINION > Prostitution Should Be Legal

SodaHead Living 2012/07/26 21:00:00
The Global Commission on HIV and the Law issued a report suggesting that nations eliminate laws banning "consensual sex work" -- i.e., prostitution. It's an interesting claim coming from an organization aimed at preventing sexually transmitted disease, but their hope is that legalization would lead to regulation and safer practice. We asked the public if prostitution should be legal.

sodahead prostitutes

Nearly two-thirds of the population admitted that it thinks prostitution should be legal. However, it's important to understand that this doesn't necessarily reflect the public's moral opinion of the topic. The question is explicitly legal. Most people think it should be a choice. One commenter wrote, "By legalizing it, mandatory health screenings can be required for the safety of the prostitute and the buyer. Trying to keep it illegal only keeps the thing in the dark where roaches like to live. Bring it into the light of public attention and those roaches will scurry."

Men Are More Willing

Should we be surprised that men were more likely to support the legalization of prostitution? Of course, the Global Commission was not referring solely to female prostitution, but it is more often thought of as a service targeted at men. Actually, the difference wasn't that big. Men were only 11% more supportive than women. Women were still more likely to support legalization than refuse it.

Christian Resistance

Religion and politics provided the biggest defenders of criminalization -- Christians and conservatives. Both demographics were significantly less supportive than the rest. Since religion and politics are often closely related, it's probably not too much of a leap to assume that religion drives this one. Allowing the nation to embrace something that Christians consider to be immoral is a tough call to make.

Older Voters Are For It

Typically, older voters respond similarly to conservative voters. In this case, that means we would predict the older a voter got the less willing they would be to support the legalization of prostitution. Not so. Actually, most age groups were relatively similar. The only one that stood out noticeably was the 55-64 group, and they were 11% more likely to support legalization.

Seriously Christians, you see transactional sex between two consenting adults as worse then the rapes, abuse and murders that you are allowing to happen by keeping it illegal...

Women in sex work cannot go to the police about rapes or abuse because of their profession and that is plain and simple WRONG.

Conservatives in Nevada are strongly in favor of legalizing prostitution. How does a conservative male explain to his 9 year old daughter it's OK to grow up to be a prostitute.

Ask Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval.Maybe one of the reasons to legalize prostitutes is to reduce it's highest in the country unemployment rate. I'm sure their economy depends on gambling, vacation resorts and other forms of tourism. It's one of the first things people stop doing in a recession. They should try bringing in a more stable industry altogether.

I was going to say yes, but with all the talk about human traffickers forcing girls and women into it, that may not be so great. But, on the other hand, if it were legaqlized and one neede a permit,or license on their person to operate, that may weed out the people forced into it by traffickers and give those victims more protection from traffickers. So, Yes if it can be done in a way to prevent traffickers getting into it illegaly.

What about the fact of being a prostitute? The sleaze, the fact she'd have more sex in a month than most people ever have? Some people on this site would envy her, I'm sure, sleaze bags.

My goodness yes. How long will this debate keep going anyway? It can never ever be stopped. It has been going on since the beginning of time plus there is so much time and money being spent by many law enforcement agencies trying to stop it. Of course law enforcement agencies don't have much else to do. They can't stop real crime all they can do is investigate. The only other things that law enforcement is good for is writing tickets, traffic control and crowd control.

Do you know why I carry a gun? Because a cop is too heavy. Remember, when you are being threatened in any way and "seconds" count, the cops are many "minutes" away.

    so true,
The police will arrest and fine those that obey laws in order to get money.
Yet they won't arrest the obvious crack dealer on the street corner because they won't pay the fine, they won't even show up for court.

Where I live the police set up check points a few hundred feet down the street from the community college so they can give out tail light and inspection sticker tickets to the students even though there are drug dealers just a few blocks away from these kids.

During the Reagan, Bush I and Clinton years the CIA sold crack in South Central LA to get funding denied by Congress for Illegal Activities.

Just remember reading it several years ago. Maxine Waters MC looked into the matter and was quite outspoken about it. I could probably spend a few minutes or hours searching, but why?

I looked up some stuff about that and the CIA did have some shady stuff protecting lowlifes because of some operations.

Maxine Walters is not a person that I respect in the slightest.
She has had a ridiculous bent on every issue in the last 30 years.
Remember she actually said that the LA Riots were justified and acceptable.
The unmerciful beating of innocent people and the looting was justified because one crack heads rights were violated.

I agree, her inquiries did nothing, chances are she was gagged. But I remember the riots, They are caused by a spark igniting an already boiling tank of oil. Just as riots are breaking out all over again. First it was the peaceful 99% movement, now it is growing into all out revolution as many are tired of corruption killing the Worker Class.

    Maxine is a major racist.
The riots were the reaction to the Rodney King incident.
It was a protest that had many people use as a reason to plunder LA.

Robbing TV's and beating up pedestrians and truck drivers is not a rebellion against corruption.

But you are right, the corruption is making people desperate and desperate people do desperate things.

    That is good to hear.
I didn't think that all the blacks of California were going to seize the opportunity to rob, steal, loot and mug innocent people. It just takes a few bad seeds to give the whole block a bad rep.
People always need to label and place people in definite categories but it is not reasonable.

    I own a construction company,
I have a black guy, a Spanish guy, and Irish guy, an Italian guy and a Mexican guy. The customer is very very gay. He wears lipstick and a flower in his ear. He said a piece of jewelry was missing. I was surprised since my guys have worked for me for the last 10 years or longer. We have never been accused of stealing. SO he tells me he thinks it is the mexican. I was laughing because here he is a liberal gay man claiming the wetback robbed him. I suppose the Irish Mick, my brother would have drank his whiskey and the spic would have stabbed him and the colored guy would have ate his chicken and hit on his girl. But no it was PANCHO that stole his jewelry.

there is a guy in every crown pretending to be so superior and tolerant yet they are all bigots.
