PUBLIC OPINION > Prostitution Should Be Legal

SodaHead Living 2012/07/26 21:00:00
The Global Commission on HIV and the Law issued a report suggesting that nations eliminate laws banning "consensual sex work" -- i.e., prostitution. It's an interesting claim coming from an organization aimed at preventing sexually transmitted disease, but their hope is that legalization would lead to regulation and safer practice. We asked the public if prostitution should be legal.

sodahead prostitutes

Nearly two-thirds of the population admitted that it thinks prostitution should be legal. However, it's important to understand that this doesn't necessarily reflect the public's moral opinion of the topic. The question is explicitly legal. Most people think it should be a choice. One commenter wrote, "By legalizing it, mandatory health screenings can be required for the safety of the prostitute and the buyer. Trying to keep it illegal only keeps the thing in the dark where roaches like to live. Bring it into the light of public attention and those roaches will scurry."

Men Are More Willing

Should we be surprised that men were more likely to support the legalization of prostitution? Of course, the Global Commission was not referring solely to female prostitution, but it is more often thought of as a service targeted at men. Actually, the difference wasn't that big. Men were only 11% more supportive than women. Women were still more likely to support legalization than refuse it.

Christian Resistance

Religion and politics provided the biggest defenders of criminalization -- Christians and conservatives. Both demographics were significantly less supportive than the rest. Since religion and politics are often closely related, it's probably not too much of a leap to assume that religion drives this one. Allowing the nation to embrace something that Christians consider to be immoral is a tough call to make.

Older Voters Are For It

Typically, older voters respond similarly to conservative voters. In this case, that means we would predict the older a voter got the less willing they would be to support the legalization of prostitution. Not so. Actually, most age groups were relatively similar. The only one that stood out noticeably was the 55-64 group, and they were 11% more likely to support legalization.

Seriously Christians, you see transactional sex between two consenting adults as worse then the rapes, abuse and murders that you are allowing to happen by keeping it illegal...

Women in sex work cannot go to the police about rapes or abuse because of their profession and that is plain and simple WRONG.

Your video doesn't seem to have worked.

I understand what you are saying, but you are confusing illegal brothels with legal ones, there is less human trafficking and less forced sex work here where brothels are legal then here where they are not.
When sex work is already illeagal, other illegal activities come along with it, where it is legal and regulated, where there is a sex workers union and police checks of what is happening behind the scenes, less illegal activity occurs, even drug use of prostitutes is down due to legalization.

Even though there are legal ones as you said, legalizing prostitution as a whole will still cause problems, bad ones...legal or illegal.

In their minds, women in sex work deserve to get raped and abused.

That's a ridiculous argument, how about they get a real job, go back to school and become a person of dignity. I think throwing your legs in the air for any and all takes no skill, your simply wrong.

When we asked sex workers about rape and abuse on the job 10 years after the legalisation they all stated on record and under oath that they felt safer and more secure in their job now then they did then.
The sex workers and the police reported less rapes, less abuse, less drugs, less murders, less forced prostitution and less stds in all cases.

So what do you say about the sex trafficking in places where prostitution is legal?

Do you also not know what rape is?

Don't worry I think the scum who do that or pay for it are worse. And no we do not see prostitution as worse than rape.

Why are you just targeting Christians? Do you think they are the only ones in opposition to Prostitution or are they just an safer target?

Seriously? 54% negative response is all you needed to condemn all Christians?
You take a small sample and generalize about 2 billion people. Do you hear of Christians stoning women to death over prostitution or even sex outside of marriage?

Many may disagree with sex workers, a few express that opinion publicly (websites are far from public due to anonymity); however, you don't see them digging a hole and burying women and certain men up to their necks so the crowd can hurl cantaloupe sized rocks at them.

You just fell into the same trap as most People when answering this survey ~ didn't read the original document ( http://cnsnews.com/news/artic... ). This is just another UN-Back Group who came together called themselves a Commission and decided to make a bunch of rule recommendations.

So tell me when was the last time the UN ever did anything useful?

Use a little perspective before you comment.

I say yes, for same reason weed should be legal. Decriminalization of such vices would bring more good than harm. Also, legal prostitution would force a lot of ladies to think twice next time they use sex as a weapon in the relationship. If a man can accessibly find a willing, legal partner for a reasonable fee...he wouldn't need a girlfriend. Most men pay that money in dates, gas, etc anyways. Why not place it on a sure bet in getting laid?!

At least people (men or women) who patronize sex workers are honest about it. I know a guy in his 60s who has about 10 dates a week with women he meets online. Then he complains that he paid $X on each date and "has nothing to show for it." I told him to stop kidding himself and just go to a prostitute.

It should be subject to payroll and sales taxes as well. Also add a "luxury" tax to it like cigarettes.

You're right they are both for sale, but no form of sin should ever be legalized.

Damn - I accidentally raved you! I was actually simply going to comment that a number of SINs as determined both by the 10 Commandments as well as as mentioned by Jesus seem to be well entrenched and far from legal... That money lending/interest collection thing being a great example along with the very difficult to define 'coveting' of neighbor's possessions, etc.... One man's sin it would appear may be another man's bank.
