PUBLIC OPINION > Pets Should Not Be Required to Wear Seat Belts

SodaHead Living 2012/06/13 21:00:00
New Jersey recently passed a law making it illegal to have unrestrained animals in the car. That means if you want to take your pooch to your parents, you'll have to figure out a way to strap it in. Failure to do so is now classified as animal cruelty, and could run residents up to $1,000 in fines and six months in jail. But penalties aside, we asked the public if pets should be required to wear a seat belt in the first place.

sodahead seat belt pets

There was a variety of reasons for and against the law, but ultimately most people agreed that they didn't want the state telling them how to handle it. Some people have ways of transporting their pets that don't involve restraints, and have been using them for years -- moving the seats, holding them in their lap, etc. Some are comfortable restraining their pets, but don't want to be caught off-guard on a short trip. It's not a major issue, but government involvement seems a little unnecessary here.

Libertarians Don't Like It

As expected, politics played a central role in this discussion. The primary issue is not so much the logic behind the law as it is the fact that it had to be turned into one. Especially with the major penalties New Jersey is placing on it. Progressives, on the other hand, see value in the heavy-handed approach, arguing that the law will make sure people don't put their pets at risk.

Girls Give Support

Women were about 11% more likely than men to agree with the law. It's not much to go by, but maybe it's their nurturing side that makes them a little more sensitive to the needs of animals. Or maybe it's that small percent of women who dress their dogs in sweaters who think it would be cute to see a puppy in a car seat.

Older Voters' Opinions Vary

From the youngest voters, all the way up through about 45 years old, support hovered around 38%. However, after that, percents fluctuated. It wasn't for lack of sample size, either, as volume was consistent throughout. Voters between 45 and 55 only showed 25% support, while voters between 55 and 65 showed 45%. It may have something to do with who's responsible for strapping the animals in.

It's sad that people think this is just about animals jumping all over the car and causing accidents. most accidents are cause by PEOPLE not animals. The reason I think this should be a law is because it is in the best interest of the ANIMAL. You buckle up your kids? Buckle up your dog. If that idea confuses you then you don't deserve to have one. Simple.

So you will have the same opinion when someone is driving down the street and has their dog bouncing around and distracting them and they hit your child? Will you have the same opinion if you had a dog bouncing around and you hit someone else's child? Will it matter to you if your pet slammed into the windshield and got seriously hurt or killed or are you one of those people who say "it's just a damn animal"?

I didn't mean to rave you. Anyway, we have gone from since I was born and before, not having this law. We cannot go around making laws against everything. The intrusions in our lives are already way out of bounds. You have a liability mentality. It is a disease in America.

It would be the responsible thing to strap in your dog just like large dogs known to be aggressive should wear a muzzle when around others. People need to be responsible and think of others.

About the time we were born there were less people on the road and people did use common sense and practiced responsibility. With less people on the roads there was less chance of accidents and back then ( from what I remember ) most people did not travel with their animals therefore taking that problem out of the equation. With more people on the road and more people period the probability of irresponsibility, lack of common sense, and lack of logic skyrockets. What I have is a everyone needs to be responsible for their actions whether they are good or bad mentality. These days when someone does something stupid and hurts other people they somehow get off and blame someone else and then when people attempt to make sure it can't or will be harder to do it again they are the ones who get blamed.

Texting and walking is dangerous. Just like driving and texting. I almost hit some kid on my way home from work because they were texting and not paying attention and walked right in front of my car. I jacked the brakes and thankfully I didnt hit them but I was pissed. If I hadn't been paying enoug attention to what he was doing I would have hit the poor kid. My opinion, it's a good law. Keeps people safe, and the pet safety belts are a fantastic idea. I have cats and they hate car rides, but when I get a dog, you can bet that I will get them a seat belt. It's called personal responsibility and some people don't have it. THAT'S why the govt needs to get involved.

why would you need a law for that? just look up when crossing the street, really dumb for starring the whole time, look up once in a while. driving is different because people dont walk 50 mph.

Absolutely, pets should be restrained in vehicles at all times. Either by seatbelts or in a carrier for their safety and the safety of the driver.

Exactly. A pet can distract a driver and cause a car crash. It's safer to have a pet in some sort of harness.

Theres personal responsibility and then there is the responsibility to look after a living thing in your care.

Pets should have to be restrained in a vehicle.
    Just like children do.
    End of story.

I certainly do not support it. It is so restrictive that pets from good homes will start showing up at the pound because the owners cannot comply.

Has any one seen the movie 'Demolition Man' with the utopian society that was perfect & the laws protected us from ourselves? No unhealthy words, so physical contact, many foods were banned; but it was to protect us.Sure it was just a movie, but we are headed that way and do we really want to go there?

It's sad that people see something that is intended to keep pets (and other passengers, in case the pet becomes a projectile in an accident) safe as a restriction on freedom. What's so great about the freedom to drive unsafely? I want the freedom to not worry about drivers who are distracted by an unrestrained pet.

The animals on this planet are just as important as humans are. With out them and all the diversity in nature, human life would not be possible.

The safety of other humans on the road are also at risk by animals in vehicles not being restrained properly. Grow up.

No seat belts for dogs. I think all dogs want to stick their head out the window. My Yorkie in the picture loved to hang his head out the window and I let him. He was 14 when we put him to sleep 3 months ago. If he were still here, I'd pay the fine to let him stick his head out the window....

That's nice... but completely unsafe. I'd hope you'd be fined repeatedly and lose your license, so I wouldn't have to worry about your dog being killed, if you get in an accident... or you causing an accident, by being distracted.

When they are properly restrained they can still do that. YOur dog can also endure repetetive eye injuries by flying debris from the roadway. Good for money on vet bills.
