There's a subtle but salient difference between the animals you eat, and the animals you befriend. It's not their intelligence -- pigs have proven to be quite smart -- or their usefulness -- chickens and cows provide eggs and milk -- but make no mistake, the farm has its favorites.
One of those favorites is the horse, provider of transportation and star of books ("Black Beauty"), movies ("Seabiscuit"), and television shows ("The Lone Ranger"). Like dogs and cats, horses have taken on a companion persona, making it difficult for some to justify consumption. Of course, horses have been slaughtered for certain types of glues and soaps for years, but the thought of eating them still turns stomachs.
Now Congress has lifted a ban on horse meat inspections, which means the product could soon become more prevalent in the U.S., and we wanted to know if SodaHeads would force down a filly cheesesteak given the chance.

Would You Eat Horse Meat?

69% Say Neeeeeigh!
Not on your life! More than two-thirds of voters were opposed to the idea of chowing down on horse meat. There were a variety of reasons, but it seems the biggest issue people have with it is the idea that horses represent something: beauty, freedom, strength, hard work, majesty, and for some, American culture. There was also plenty of debate of the technicalities: Is the meat safe? Is it already used in other products? Haven't they been doing it all along? There was also a strong vegan and vegetarian turn-out, judging by the comments. But there were a couple of other factors you might not have anticipated...

Gals Are Aghast
The most obvious disagreement in the demographic breakdown was gender. Men were 32% more likely to try horse meat than women -- only one out of five women were willing to touch the stuff. It does seem that women have a stronger interest in horses and horseback riding. Maybe it's from watching "Black Beauty" one too many times. But... where are all the Bronies?

Smokers and drinkers were both 12% more likely to try horse meat than the rest. Suffice it to say, that would include most of the cowboys who rode back in the day. It's a good thing Myles Keogh didn't get hungry -- for Comanche's sake.
Teens Won't Tolerate It
Based on age, the youngins were least likely to try it. After that, it gets a little uneven, but the youngest voters seemed a bit horrified at the idea. As one young voter wrote, "They're way too pretty to eat." Kids don't need a whole lot more than that to sense that something isn't right.

Morgan Grinpas 2012/04/16 20:07:41+3That is just horid. Think about it, you have this beautiful animal with long flowing mane, that can run faster then almost anything, toned muscles and large sharp hooves, and domesticated. Now WHO THE HELL could eat that?

Do you can eat horses? I can't. Truly, if I need to kill an animal to eat, I don't even will try (my family use to consume more vegetables than fish, meat or chicken).
Your second paragraph is difficult to make sense out of.
People make what was taught, traditions, etc. If it's logical or not, it is what it is.
Do you can eat horses? I can't.
I can't even try to kill an animal.
I prefer vegetables, salads, fruits that are abundant here. a logical reason would be exactly the sympathy for the horse. Emotions move the human, like traditions do. I love cats, dogs, horses. Pigs are food.
The logical reason could be horse has a hard meat. But any way I would think on eat horses, indeed.
I don't eat animals because I think it's wrong to eat another sentient being. However, if I did eat animals, I wouldn't restrict myself because of cultural standards. That's ridiculous.
How would you know how "hard" the meat is without having tried it?
I'm not going in barbecue gatherings or so. Because of the ridiculous pression on the others, like you're doing now, vegan are boring.
I'm not exterminating any animal specie.
I'm not Ronald McDonald...
Pls, go rebuking tankers that pollute the ocean, or the whalers.
