PUBLIC OPINION > Most People Have Been Attracted to Friends

Living 2012/05/08 16:00:00
A recent study showed that guys are more likely to be sexually interested in their female friends than vice versa, but falling for a friend isn't all that uncommon for either gender, is it? If your friend is really attractive, is there really anything you can do to avoid it? Well, we wanted to know the answer, and we wanted to break it down by demographics. So we asked the public.

Just as we suspected. Most people have fallen for a friend at one time or another. At least physically. It's not really something you can control. It's one thing to become romantically interested, but mere attraction is just a whim and hard to suppress. Especially if you're around that person a lot. One commenter admitted, "All of them. Pretty much any of my friends that are female, I would have sexual relations with them if given an opportunity." And that sentiment was not uncommon, although it was particular to a certain demographic...

Men Are More Likely

After reading through the comments, we decided the actual percentage here might be a little deceptive. Men were only 8% more likely to have been attracted to a friend, but that's because pretty much everyone has been. More importantly, we noticed that, on average, female comments referred to "this one time," while male comments sounded more like "all the time." Of course, there were plenty of exceptions with both genders.

Young Adults in Denial

One of the few demographics that came in significantly lower than most was, oddly enough, the 18-24 age group. We found that interesting because it was actually a large sample size, so it's probably pretty accurate. Teens said they've been attracted... and 18- to 24-year-olds were once teens, too. So why did it drop? Our suspicion is that they're less likely to admit it because platonic relationships can feel more fragile at that age.

Drinkers Do It All the Time

Why are we not surprised? People who consider themselves "drinkers" were 7% more likely to have been physically attracted to one of their friends. Alcohol does tend to have that affect. Drinkers are probably also 7% more likely to have been physically attracted to the "Mona Lisa" at some point. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Once, and only once, because we were both dating other people at the time.

That said, I hate when my friends have crushes on me. It's flattering, but it also makes me wonder, "Are they the type who just sits there and pines thinking, 'If only she'd see that I'm right here!' or are they actually just seeing me as a friend." The former suggests they're a douche, the latter tells me they're cool.

My friend is bi, but she has a girlfriend, so I don't think she likes me like that. Well, last I checked she has a girlfriend, anyway. I haven't seen my friend in a week and won't see her for another one because she left for space camp yesterday. I'm not bi, straight, or lesbian. I don't want romance at all. I'm too distrusting of people. The only boy I know gave me a concussion once.

I've never dated a friend, but I'll admit that I have been attracted to a few of my male friends. I already love them for who they are as people and we usually have loads in common.

    Just because you corrected Dalynn Beck;

    1.) a lot
    2.) he's
3.) "he's the guy" or "he'd be the guy"
    4.) "I'd"
5.) I is capitalized when it is used in words such as I'd and I'm. I is also capitalized when it is used by itself.

Following is a revised version of your statement.

"I really like my friend, however I am dating someone else. If anything ever happens between my bf and I, my friend would be the guy I would fall back on."

Did I get your situation correct? It was very hard to understand your original statement due to the large amount of errors.
