PUBLIC OPINION > More Men Want to Stay at Home Than Women

SodaHead Living 2012/09/13 21:00:00
Gender roles aren't quite what they used to be. In the last 100 years, women in America have earned the right to vote and made significant progress toward financial equality. Women are free to pursue their own careers, or stay at home if they choose. Likewise, it's becoming more socially acceptable for men to stay at home. But does that actually reflect what the respective genders want out of life? We asked more than 500 people if they would rather work or stay at home.

stay at home dad

The results were split down the middle, with 51% of voters preferring to work and 49% preferring to stay at home. We should point out right off the bat that "staying at home" does not mean "relaxing at home." The Top Opinion read, "Staying at home is work!" Of course, each person will interpret "staying at home" differently. The most common interpretation was raising the kids, while some took it to mean simply working from home.

Women Don't Want to Stay at Home

No matter how you interpret the options, one thing is clear: women are less likely than men to want to stay at home. Many respondents suggested that women are natural care-givers, but the majority of female voters would rather go to work, often saying they'd go crazy staying home all day. Men were actually 10% more likely to desire staying at home.

Teens Want to Work

We were a little bit surprised to find that teens were actually most eager to go to work. By a lot. Some respondents did take "staying at home" to mean "doing nothing," but very few of them were teens. The 35-44 age group was least interested in going to work, probably opting to work from home after years of working in an office next to that guy who doesn't cover his mouth when he sneezes.

Workers Wouldn't Mind Staying Home

On a similar note, unemployed voters were more likely to say they want to work than voters who are fully or partially employed, suggesting it's not for lack of motivation that people are out of the job. Full-time employees would rather stay at home. Again, this is probably due to office burn-out.

    I want to stay Home!

After all, I served in the Navy for 20 Years, Combat duty in Gulf War 1 now Disabled Veteran, Retired and worked 35 Years in Retail Management.

YEP! Love being home, watering the grass, trimming the Trees, Playing Golf, and being on Soda Head. And the Best Part is that I don't have to work Sundays any more and i am free for Church and that alone is more important to me than anything else.

    **************** Dang ! I love Retirement *************

But Thanks to Obama, I have less money to spend and now Gas is $4.15 a Gallon here in California. Guess you know who I am Not going to vote for in November.

It really depends, I'd rather work at a job that I actually care about and want to do. But if I don't have that option, than yeah I'd rather stay home and work on my hobbies (Such as writing) and enjoy all the time I can.

But this world requires some money too so...

I would love to stay home, but I like having money, and it's necessary stuff to have, too. I'd probably let the "office" burnout get to me but I'm actually making more than I was before and in line to make even more than that, I have 30 years experience in what I do and I'm good at it, but I wouldn't say I "love" it. I just grew up in the same business and learned a lot. I guess that feels good, but it's not what I want to do.

I love cooking, and being with my family even more. I would like to have more time for hobbies, but I'm also in college for another year, so I get no real time (except sometimes here) to relax and enjoy things I like doing. By the time I get home (after almost an hour each way commute), get food down, shower, and homework, I don't sleep that much and it's time to get up and do it all again. There's very little television watching. Even if I did enjoy it much, which I don't really, I'd just feel like I was not getting something else done, or I'd fall asleep watching it anyway.

I just got done studying, it's almost midnight, and tomorrow I will be getting up at 4 a.m. to take my son and his teammate to an early morning water polo practice. The coach is my stepson, so see if I cook him anything good...lol! This weekend I will be doing finals for the class I'm in, but at least I'll be able to get some sleep in :D YAY!

People who think working is hanging out somewhere and getting an easy paycheck will choose work.

People who really work and given the option not to work would prefer the easy route.

    I could do without a three-hour commute.

Why not stay home, if you can? What reward is there really, in the corporate wage slave world? You work hard, and are unappreciated, and saddled with unjust taxes for being productive. America doesn't appreciate the people who build the country anymore, that's why this country is doomed.

I was a stay at home dad while my wife worked. It was fun and relaxing at first. The kids were in school, once I had the housework finished as well as yard work I had a few hours to myself.Truthfully I would not do that again.I missed work and making a paycheck.

I am a stay at home Mum with two daughters (aged 2 & 4). Prior to starting our family I worked as a receptionist. My husband & I now run a business from home (he is a mechanic & we offer a mobile mechanical repair service for trucks & earth moving equipment). My hubby would love the chance to stay at home with the kids & be a house husband but my earning power wouldn't come close to covering our living expenses let alone having any "fun money" so this is the way it has to be (but he does love what he does so he isn't grumpy!)

Being able to spend so much time with my kids is the best job in the world & I love it.

I am not a parent, but I do have many friends starting families. I think that parents in general would love to watch their kids grow up, but aren't in the right place financially. I LOVE working, but if I can afford to stay home I would until the last one enters middle school.

Can't you do both. We can rotate night or day jobs and have weekends to be a family. To much work is boring.
Being home to much is boring. To much time around the same people boring. You need something to break up the routine.

I'd most definitely like to stay at home, save money on gas transportation and getting in arguments with co-workers, especially the ones that hit on you when you already had made it clear to them, when your in the workplace all that's on your mind is for the day to finish so you can go home, It feel uncomfortable sometimes being in a place with different people and hearing all kinds of noises like telephones and cell phones ringing, yelling etc. when you at home your in your comfort zone, you can spend more time with the girlfriend, wife and kids and be intimate in the day while going to fridge for anyone you want. I realised that most people who stayed at home lived longer cause they were in total comfort. a lady in my community stayed home for years and she is 109 and still walking and talking like a 60 year old

Maybe the men/women split is a case of "the grass is greener on the other side".

Men can be wonderful with kids and have fun with them. I'm not sure about men and all the other things SAH mothers have to do though.

Misguided feminism and higher taxes has set families back. More women work and kids grow up without a parent at home.

Says who? That's over-simplflying and inaccurate. It's not just higher taxes alone.

Plenty of over burdened family courts and dead beat dads have contributed to this, since women usually get custody of children, plus now that divorce is much more acceptable ( as well as single parenting and out of wedlock sex- something very men have have complained about, I might add), single moms ( and some dads) are the norm. It doesn't take a genius to see that two incomes pull in more than one.
