PUBLIC OPINION > Kids Under 13 Should Not Be on Facebook

SodaHead Living 2012/06/06 22:00:00
Though Facebook doesn't allow kids under the age of 13 to register on the site, surveys have shown that many of them sign up anyway. That's why Facebook is developing a way to let younger kids make a Facebook account through their parents' account. That way their parents can keep a close eye on it and even control certain elements of the site, such as who their kids are friends with, and youngsters won't have as much reason to set up their own. We wanted to know how the public feels about this.

sodahead kids facebook

Sorry, kids, but the public has spoken. Even with parent-monitored accounts, most people think kids under 13 should stay off Facebook. The primary fear is simple: Online predators. Chris Hansen can't put them all away, and though reports of children actually meeting online predators are very rare, one instance is one too many.

Teens Stand Up for Tots

Age was certainly a factor, but it didn't turn out exactly how we expected. Most age groups only showed about 18%-23% support for allowing kids on Facebook, but two groups voted differently. Teens were the most permissive, presumably because they're closest in age to the kids we're discussing. But the 35-44 group was also oddly permissive.

Women Don't Want Kids Online

Female voters were a little bit more concerned about allowing younger kids to have Facebook accounts. Women do tend to be the nurturing ones, and we could also point out here that, based on what we've seen from "To Catch a Predator," there aren't very many female online predators on the prowl.

Liberals Might Let Them

The political spectrum played out pretty much how we expected: Liberals are a little more lenient, while conservatives were a little more protective. Liberals embrace new technology and new ideas, while conservatives are hesitant to head in that direction. Both approaches are necessary to ensure a safe, civilized society.

I don't really think they should, because it's against Facebook's TOS. Also, most of the people that would be on it would say incredibly stupid crap, and there is already enough of that on facebook.

No children under 16. Let Facebook create another Facebook, especially for kids.

I'm assuming the 35-44 group was "oddly permissive" because it's probably the group that has had the most experience with having to deal with children under 13 and Facebook... I have friends in that age range whose children are on Facebook. I'm not entirely against it, as long as the parents are actually supervising the child's account and activity (and as long as the child's account is private and the child is only permitted to add and communicate with people known by the child's parents).
It doesn't matter how mature your 10 year old is, they should not be allowed on Facebook unsupervised. I like their idea of tying the account to the parents.

no, it just seems too dangerous..... they wouldn't really know if something was happening, whereas older people would be more likely to be aware of these problems with the internet.
and the main reason i have fb is for catching up with family/friends who live in another part of the country or world from me. im not saying young kids wont miss people but it is easier for them to write a letter or call, but teens and olds dont have the time, generally.

Get them away from it. I think you need to be of a mature age(hard to tell sometimes) to be on Facebook. I don't even use Facebook. Even though it could be used for positive.

Heard that younger folks are more vulnerable to Identity Theft online. They put more friends & such on social sites so it's somewhat easier for others to crack their passwords.
Kudos to FaceBook for bundling youngster's accounts with their caretakers.

Well, it's alright it they are mature enough to know how to handle social networking sites. Otherwise, it'll go something like this..

Kacy: long day in 3rd grade. Stupid Mary stole my crayons. Ain't no one steal my crayolas.
    Mary: no I didn't
Kacy: yes you did you butthead
    Mary: I'm telling my mommy!

Why is it that big of a deal? If the parents can monitor their kids online activity, which they should, then what's the problem?

ONLY an idiot parent would allow their under 13 child on facebook. They may argue that only their friends and family are on their. This is why they are idiots. To think that they can or will be able to monitor and protect their children on facebook, is completely naive. Facebook is not harmful in itself. However, it is a dangerous outlet and tool that in the wrong hands has and will cause great harm to people. Whether they are punished for their actions afterward or not, the damage may be done...and unfortunately, because of the capacity of the service, it can destroy a life before it happens. Think that is an extreme view? Take a look at what has happened on and because of facebook, already. Kid clicks on the wrong pop up, they can end up in adult conversations and situations they never intended to. Kids have killed themselves over comments. Kids have been pursued and kidnapped as a result of their underage access. I think the age should be high school or higher and still, with adult supervision. If a parent wants to have their child on his or her facebook account with them, while they are posting hellos and pictures to family or friends, that is one thing. Alone and on their own accounts? NO!

No they should not be allowed to go onto Facebook.

In fact Facebook should be taken off of the web it destroys too many relationships, marriages, friendships etc. In my opinion it is the worst thing to happen to the internet since the internet was created. Because now we are all fat lazy slobs. Myself included.

It depends on the kid, but generally they shouldn't be on facebook, even if we ignore all the stupid ranting, the pictures that could shock even a 30 year old and the huge amount of social overrated drama there are many things that could really harm them. People(of any age) tend to reveal too much personal information on the internet, information that make them easy targets for all kind of people...
