PUBLIC OPINION > It's Still Harder to Be a Woman

SodaHead Living 2012/07/17 21:00:00
Women recently outscored men in IQ testing research for the first time in a century, but that doesn't necessarily mean life is easier on them. Women have made a lot of social, political and financial progress during that time... But is it still harder to be a woman? Hahajk.com asked the public.

women

The short answer is yes, most people think it is still harder to be a woman. However, the original question had two separate responses for each answer. The most popular answer overall was "Yes, but it's getting better." So despite the discouraging result, there's quite a bit of optimism out there. The most popular "No" response was that everyone gets "a fair shake."

Men Call It Even

Gender was, not surprisingly, the most divisive demographic. In fact, men were the only major demographic that gave "No" a majority vote, and it was by quite a bit. Only 35% of them think it's tougher to be a woman. Voters cited scholarships, maternity leave, the draft, and custody battles as a few reasons why men can also have it rough.

Teens Say It's Tough to Be a Woman

Age wasn't as significant as gender, but there was certainly a correlation. Teens, on average, were about 20% more likely than older respondents to claim it's still tougher to be a women, though it fluctuated a bit. Maybe it's a matter of perspective. For older voters, it might be that women seem to have it easier relative to the past.

Money Doesn't Discriminate

One reason some feel women still have it rough is that they typically make less than men. Based on the income demographic, people who make more more than $50,000 are more likely to say that men and women have a fair shake. It could be that there are more men making over $50,000, or it could be that women who make over $50,000 don't feel as much pressure.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit the original poll about being a woman. We'd love to hear from you!

Many think it's harder to be a woman because the politically correct thing is to think all burdens rest on females, but women are more intelligent, men are bad, women are good, and the list goes on.

I noticed many Sodahead males readily agree that women are more intelligent and men get all the lucky breaks. What a crock! I cannot fathom why so many of us think that women have no advantages. They want to be our equals, but I still feel the pressure of thinking it's "ladies first." To hell with that! Saying "ladies first" is saying that women are superior. There is absolutely no reason why we should continue the practice of ladies first.

BTW: When my uncle was a boy in the Sixties, he said that boys would get physically punished for the slightest thing. Girls were always respected, and nobody ever, ever thought of physically punishing a female. A male gym teacher humiliated boys and flirted with girls. Many other male teachers followed suit. So girls had it harder???

Western women have become self-righteous, narcissistic, bitches who often have no respect for males. No woman gets my respect until I see that it's going to be reciprocated.

I don't know any women who fit that description whatsoever. The femme fatale exists only in movies. I've never seen one in real life unless you count coke addicts.

I once took a birth control pill with androgens. I found myself feeling less of need to apologize or make up for my wrongs. I had less sympathy for strangers. I got more things done in a day since I wasn't thinking about anyone else but myself. I wasn't able to relate to others for more than a few minutes at a time. I would say things that I knew sounded short, curt, and kinda rude but I didn't feel bad enough to care how the other person took it.

I would not do it again.

Men use 1 hemisphere of their brain - either the practical and analytical one, or the artistic one.
Women use both - thus our ability to multi-task.

Men can NEVER be the same as women, and vice-versa.

Think of it this way, men: you don't have to worry about getting pregnant and carrying a child inside of your for nine to ten months.

Currently, in Western society a woman isn't expected to only be pretty and nothing about her matters. Women can do more in life than just looking pretty and taking care of their children. They are also able to pursue the careers of their choice.

Yet, most people still expect men to support the family financially and not too many handsome men want to date ugly girls. Or, at least that's the stereotype.

The days of keeping women Under men is really getting OLD. In the days of the Nomads, over 4000 years ago, men established a patriarch society to run everything, including women. Today, there seems to be a spark of that patriarch mentality still slithering around in ways of men. When women are equal to men, there is a lot more loving and general getting along with each sex. It is the long run we look at, being equal.

I didn't read the whole thing because I'm lazy today, but the fact that there is another poll on this pretty much convinces me that women will always have it harder. But here in America it's nothing compared to other countries where women are still being forced to cover their faces.

I think the reason it's harder for women is because of women. (I am a woman.) We have service such high standards for ourselves over the years, trying to be perfect, and it's backfiring. We think we have to look, dress, and act a certain way or we aren't good enough. And it's not true at all. Society had adapted these views that were created by women as a standard, and now we don't want to live by it. We've service unrealistic standard for ourselves and then gotten angry about it. It's stupid. Who has a right to say men are better, or women are better? It's 2012, and if we arent equal by now we never will be. If women dont want magazine perfect to be the norm, maybe we shouldnt have set the standard to begin with.

Anyway what is this deal about "who's life is sh*ttier than another?"... This question doesn't raise any universal understanding of the "I'm a poor woman" case. Men and women are both stupids in their own ways. That question is stupid 'cuz:
    - Today, the question is not the same as 20 years later or so...
    - Depending on where you comment from (wich country), the answer is biased...
    - Many will answer depending on their own experience, wich isn't representative of the global mass of others from the same sex.
    - The earth has enough to deal with with both men and women... so it doesn't give a damn about who has it worst... All it wants is to breath and live well... and we're crushing it little by little, day by day... So our pesky troublesome specie in a whole IS a problem.

    Sorry, just sayin' ... ;)

If we talk about now, right now, I can't readily agree that women have it worst than us. They may have a few extra to deal with since their body is a little more complex than ours, but as it stands in society and everything around it, I think that women have it heavier... 'cuz of other womens. Mens are a part of the equation since the dawn of time, but as the women thought of us as being "in competition with one another", I think the womens took that bad habit too... to a step further. It may be that the IQ of the women rose up to an edge never seen before... but it doesn't mean in any way that they're using it well in society. So today, If life is harder for women, don't blame the men... Blame the other women!

Yes and No... In many situations, women get a better deal just because they are women. Courts, for example are biased in favor of women in child custody and divorce settlements. Employers often prefer to hire women and fear accusations of discrimination if they dont give the job to a woman. That said, considering the way most men treat women, I would not want to be a woman.

Please; most problems women have now, they bring upon themselves. Stress from a job outside the home? Seems obvious how to cure that. Problems with partners? Pare down to one and stick to them. There are others, but the upshot is, behave properly and your stress will be lessened.

You are out of your mind. Yes, just be a nice little girl and all will go well in the world. Gee, do you write for Disney? Sounds like it.

I like your logic, "She was asking for it!" "She deserves it!" That's your logic. Because we all know when women get discriminated in a job interview, treated poorly in public, dismissed at town hall meetings, it's all her fault. If only she had told everyone she was married for to the same guys since she was 12 and talked in a soft voice everything would have been fine. WTH?

First and foremost, IQ is a bastardized way of judging one's intelligence. It's been discredited time and time again, and yet people still revere it as some absolute test. It's not.

Second, Women are not more intelligent than men. I bring this up because, in Art's topic on this, people repeatedly stated women were "always" smarter than men. That's pretty sexist. No gender is superior to another, and it's Social Darwinism (essentially a fascistic root) to act like one is.

That said, I agree that women still have it hard. But the amount of overly-feminist bias guttered out of people's mouths on this very subject is pathetic. Women have it tougher because of certain cultures; because of how they're perceived by men. But this notion isn't universal, and it doesn't apply to every culture. Not only that, but because the problem lies in perception, there should be no criticism on the law's role in this issue. The law is fine. People are not.

If I feel I please a guy, I think it's nice, but I'm waiting for him to do something nice back to me. If he just sits there waiting for more I think he's a self bastard.

She's a bias sexist. But it should be done now. Her argument is incredibly flawed because men also have cerebral advantages, which counteracts her examples on women's physiological advantages. I think I pointed that out fairly well :]
