PUBLIC OPINION > Don't Ban Sexy Dresses From Prom

SodaHead Living 2012/04/04 17:00:00
We never saw a follow-up to that Mike Stone story -- you know, the guy who was going to take a porn star to prom until his school banned her. We wonder if the school changed its mind. Probably not, because some schools are taking things a step further to prevent sexual activity. Schools all over the country are banning certain styles of dress deemed too sexy. Excess cleavage, thigh-high slits, rib cage cutouts, and anything more than three inches above the knee are forbidden at one school or another. An Oklahoma City high school is even telling guys not to take their shirts off, no matter how ripped they think they are. We asked the public if these kinds of bans are appropriate.

sexy dress

There were some strong opinions on this one, but in the end sexy prom dresses won out. One argument in favor of allowing them was that a ban would be an unnecessary infringement on personal choice. It's not that everyone who voted "Yes" thinks wearing a low-cut dress to prom is a good idea, they just don't see the point in forcing it. Besides, as the Top Opinion quipped, "They're just gonna be taking them off at the end of the night anyway." Those who supported the ban generally promoted a "better safe than sorry" sentiment. Plus, most schools already have dress codes on campus.

High Schoolers Want Their Sexy Back

First, let's go with the most obvious demographic. High schools were, not surprisingly, all for sexy dresses. However, quite a few high schoolers posted pictures of classy prom dresses similar to the ones they wore, or were planning to wear. They just don't care much if other girls want to dress "sexy." (They generally used a different word.)

Conservatives Crack Down

Conservatives were the strongest supporters of the ban -- a good 20% stronger than Christians. Interestingly, libertarians were the least supportive, emphasizing one of the key differences between the conservative right and the libertarian right. Conservatives are more concerned about family values, while libertarians are more concerned about personal choice.

The Unmarried Are OK With It

The age breakdown was a little bit uneven, but marriage was a clean cut. Every relationship demographic except married -- single, in a relationship, divorced, complicated -- averaged about 25%, while married voters averaged 47%. Engaged voters came close, but the sample size was too small to register when we combined all of the unmarried votes.

I see no problem. The older generation will always knock the younger generation because they can't comprehend change.

This is little kids. I do not need a 17 year old (or any teenager for that matter) to show me how sexy they can be by showing so little. I have problems enough.

I think you should ban them. I hate how girls always want to show off what they have. You have them, but that doesn't mean people don't look. What if someone looks at them to tell them something, and all they see is their 'you know what's hanging out. I hate it! Ban them!

I'm not. Ask ever kid in my school it's just that, I always cover up. I'm in 7th grade, and girls are dressing like they've graduated collage. I HATE IT! Oh, and here's something for calling me a b__ch:
    A b__ch is a female dog.
    Dogs bark.
    Bark is on trees.
    Trees is nature.
    Nature is beautiful.
You just called me beautiful, so you made no sense at your comment!

to much skin showing and it is a prooven fact most girls' loose thier virginity on prom night. Let the girls where different dresses and stop trying to dress like hollywood celebs at these things.

Lets see, the same clueless adults who fail to realize or stop bullies think they know who to stop kids from having sex and the anwser is in restricting dresses worn on a single night by a specific demograph of the school.....man adults are morons.

It's a time where girls start to want to dress sexy. It's also the night of their lives, let them wear what they want.

No, as long as the wearer knows how to handle herself and is wearing it to just look pretty and not to advertize something else. And I mean this in a respectfully way! Girls should be able to make there date proud of there choice for the dance!

If girls want to dress slutty/sexy, they can do that at nightclubs from age 18 and up. Frankly, the prom is also called a "formal." Contrary to what they may actually wear, a short skirt is not "formal," it's semi-formal.

I wouldn't say they should ban attractive dresses per se, but show some class when you go to the prom. I don't think it's alright for girls to go there wearing miniskirts with their thongs hanging out or anything. They're not going to a club to attract every guy there so they can go home and have an orgy. The prom is a formal occasion.

Ah gee, this is a tough call for me. My daughter will be hitting the red carpet in a few years and I can only imagine what will be available then. But hey, it's a right of passage for the boys and girls. Tone down the slut factor but let the cleavage in...grown up time!

Seniors are 18 yr.-olds and should wear what they want. Unfortunately, Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen aren't. If your under 18, you don't need to wear a "sexy" dress. You're a girl and should concentrate on education so you can get into college.

GAH! Just leave it alone. Have you EVER seen a gorgeous short party dress only 3 inches above the knee? No. You havent. Not if it was tailored right. And i promise, if the skanky girls want to wear next to nothing and look trashy, they're going to get enough backlash from their peers. Has anyone ever considered that you can look elegant without a pilgrim dress? Cant schools find something else more important to ban?

Schools have no business banning any type of dress as long as they allow slouches to wear pants with the crotches hanging between the knees, drawers showing 4 inches at the waist, And hairy, legs with ugly, really ugly athletic shoes. Talk about slobs.

I guess if they want to look like little sluts let them. My mother would have NEVER let me out of the house showing as much skin as some of those dresses do. It wouldn't have mattered if I was 18 or not.

That isn't bad is the ones that have big sections of the belly and are really low cut plus short that bother me. Easily solved I didn't wear one like that and I will never let a daughter of mine out like that.

Now that is sultry and sexy without being over the edge with boobs hanging and swinging. Good taste CAN be sexy and super nice, not wild on the rags from the waist that is so popular but very nice anyway.
