PUBLIC OPINION > Best Friends Are Usually Same-Sex

Some might scoff at the idea of having a "best friend," but the reality is that we can't dedicate our time to everyone equally. When you add up all the hours spent hanging out, talking on the phone, texting, one of your friends is bound to come out on top. It could be your childhood pal, your spouse, or your daughter. But we were curious to know how gender plays into that role. We asked the public if their best friend is the same sex as they are.

The numbers were pretty close, but same-sex friends seem to fare the best. Judging by the comments, relationships complicate the definition of "best friend," making it a little tough to pinpoint what the term means in a broader sense. For instance, some voters said their significant other "doesn't count," while others were perfectly willing to count their partner as their best friend. Still others admitted that while their partner means a lot, they simply wouldn't consider them a "best friend."
A Girl's Best Friend

Half of male voters (52%) say their best friend is female, but two-thirds of female voters claim female best friends (63%). Theoretically, that means there are quite a few guys out there without a best friend. Incidentally, 65% of the people who answered the question were female, which means the guys without best friends probably passed on the question.
Gays Go for the Opposite Sex

Since this poll deals exclusively with gender relations, we'd be amiss not to address the homosexual demographic. Interestingly enough, they seemed to favor the opposite sex for best friends. That's good news for girls in need of a gay friend; bad news for their jealous boyfriends.
Marriage Doesn't Change Much

We expected relationship status to have a strong impact on how people responded, especially after looking through the comments, but it actually didn't change a whole lot. Singles were about 10% more likely than married voters (and voters in an unmarried relationship) to have a same-sex best friend. That's about it.

He got married, and I don't think we're allowed to be friends any more ;p
Which really stinks... Know what I mean ?
Glad it worked out for you !
Peace to ya, Girl ;0 )
:D
Women drive me crazy.
are extremely different
in lifestyle than I am, and
makes it difficult to be friendly...
For me, as best friends go,
I'd rather they be men, who are
less catty, emotional, and demanding...
Although challenges abound there as well,
as, sometimes, 'friendhip' lines are crossed, sooo
I tend to hang out with me, myself, and I most of the time...
but i have both
but one of my best friends is a guy, i have alot of guy friends, but mostly girls.
I tend to find girl friends more annoying and they talk about stuff that doesnt matter. But they're still good friends.
