PUBLIC OPINION > Being Super Skinny Isn't All That

SodaHead Living 2012/06/08 22:00:00
"American Idol" original Kelly Clarkson proudly announced that she had absolutely no desire to be "super-skinny," echoing statements Adele made last year. Clarkson said, "I do cardio. I run. I strength-train using my own body weight. [But] really, what I try to instill in my fans is to be healthy and happy. I have no desire to be super-skinny." We wanted to know if other people have that desire.

We suspect many people want to be thin, or thinner, but "stick thin" indicates an extreme. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that most people claim they're free from that desire. In other words, they have healthy expectations. One commenter even wrote, "I'd rather be called fat than anorexic." But, as Clarkson said, the key is to stay happy and healthy. A desire to be stick thin can never be healthy.

Weight Affects Women

Women obviously have more societal expectations to deal with, and that was abundantly clear in the results. Women were more than twice as likely as men to say they'd felt the desire to be "stick thin." Nearly half of women had struggled with that feeling, compared to just one in five guys.

Skinny Struggles Too

We expected there to be a difference in response correlating to weight class, but we definitely didn't expect the slimmest voters to struggle the most. Skinny voters were 8% more likely than overweight voters to say they'd felt the desire to be super-skinny. Overweight people would likely be content just to lose some weight, but for some it's never enough.

Old-Timers Are Content

The desire to be attractive or accepted is timeless, but older generations were far less likely to have felt the desire to be super-skinny, even though they have decades on the younger voters. And because the question asked if voters have "ever" wanted to be stick thin, we have to assume it's a relatively new issue.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about being super-skinny. We'd love to hear from you!

I'm sorry, but I personally am getting sick and tired of this. If you don't think being "super skinny" is all that, then so be it. Maybe it wasn't meant for you, or in street terms, "You ain't about that life..." Have I ever felt the need to be stick thin? NOPE! Because I'm naturally stick thin. I get criticized for my size a lot, but at the end of the day there still are thousands of girls who practically kill themselves to be as thin as me. And if you DO want to be skinny, do it the healthy way. Eat well, work out, and don't over-do anything.

I never felt the need to be stick thin, that's just wrong and unhealthy. I just want to stick on an average weight, those are the best.

i wish i could find this picture that basically sums up exactly how i feel about this topic. if some girl would like to be super skinny then let her if some girl wants to be overweight then let her. it shouldnt matter what others want to do to themselves just focus on what you want for yourself

I personally think that super skinny is just gross and unnatural. Do you want to look like a starving child from the 3rd world? I would prefer anyone with just a little meat on them.

Never have, never will. I walk 3 miles a day, make better choices and destress every night after work so I don't cart it around and eat or sulk. I'm happy, have an active intimate life and a satisfied husband. Why do I need to be skinny? What does it offer that I don't already have?

I'm am naturally slender and I am tired of people telling me that I should eat more. If I ever told every person who told me that to "eat less" I would be seen as a bully. Ugh!

I hear what you are sayin. I have overweight friends and friends that are naturally lean. People ALWAYS especially other women are critical of their weight/looks. One girl I knew in HS had long blonde hair, very lean figure, and thick glasses(she was poor like me)....she felt ignored most the time. She ended up getting her masters in psychology and help girls with body issuses(making BIG $$$$)...and still gets people telling her to eat a burger....

As long as you are happy and not starving yourself, body type is just body type. We have no control over that. I have a petite body type, and people used to say I was anorexic but I just have a high metabolism, which I'm really thankful for. So people are either going to be skinny or fat and if you want to change that, work on it, and if you dont, more power to you :)

NO. I was naturally thin in my youth and still not too fat or skinny. I have always thought that a lot of people in the fashion industry hate women or at least are not interested in them. How can you decide what size a female model should be if you are not interested in shape?

No one should fell they have to be thin as a stick I mean sure a bit of exercise here and there is great but that is just unhealthy and if people can see ur ribs and stuff how the hell is that suppose to look attractive

If you cant see a persons ribs, they should be fine. I was born skinny and I've always been like that because of my high metabolism, although you can't see my ribs (thankgoodness) But I'm definitely fatter than that model over there. I'd do anything to put on some weight, while other people are sulking because they gained 5 pounds I'm jumping up and down in excitement telling my mum dad sister brother grandparents friends cousins and everybody. I think it doesn't matter what body type you are, embrace your flaws, they are what makes you who you are.

Lots of the weight you see on your scale is most probably because of your bone weight. But you shouldn't worry if you can see your ribs, if you feel healthy, go for general check ups and keep a good diet and excercise: nothing else matters. The thing with skinny people is that you can't tell if they're healthy or not. Being skinny could be a healthy sign, OR an unhealthy sign. Where as, when people are obese or overweight it is most definitely a sign of an unhealthy person, there is no way a person can be absolutely healthy while being overweight. I know the 'overweight' bit doesn't apply to you but i like lecturing people over the internet. It's fun.
