PUBLIC OPINION > An All-Girls Prom Sounds Kind of Lame

SodaHead Living 2012/05/04 22:00:00
At many American schools, there's this whole big deal about who you're going to go to prom with. It's also perceived as something of an under-the-table avenue for teen sex, though studies show it's probably not as common as teens think it is. But Hamtramck High School in Michigan just had its first all-girl prom to accommodate girls at the school who were of the Muslim faith, which places limitations on dating and dancing. Not only was the event a hit, but it also sparked admiration from sites like Gurl and The Mary Sue. We asked the public if a girls-only prom sounds like fun.

all girl prom

There were definitely some takers, but most people said they'd pass on an all-girl prom. Nothing against those who like the idea (for good measure, two-thirds of the Muslim vote was "Lame") it just doesn't have the same appeal as a co-ed event. There was a variety of reasons why people though the idea was lame, but it basically boiled down to the obvious: most people want a traditional prom. One commenter wrote, "I understand it's their religion. But any dance without boys there would be lame..." And of course, the guys had a unique challenge in answering this question, but we'll get to that in a bit.

Not Popular With Older Folk

Seeing as this is the first prom of its kind at Hamtramck High, it should come as no surprise that age was a major factor here. Voters 18-24 were most likely to give the all-girl prom idea a thumbs-up (teens were a little less enthusiastic) and support decreased steadily as voters got older. By the time they were in their 50s, only about one in five liked the idea.

Bisexuals Are On Board

In the comments section, we noticed that there was a lot of discussion about sexuality. Some of the discussion was presumptive, claiming the girls who attended "must be lesbians," but as one commenter noted, "Just because it's an all girls prom doesn't mean they're all lesbians." However, we also noticed quite a few comments from bisexual voters who loved the idea, and sure enough, it showed in the results.

Girls and Guys Are in Agreement

We're not exactly sure how to address the gender issue here, since obviously an all-girl prom would disqualify any male voters from attending. And that's no fun. But the results showed little difference in female and male response. Based on the comments, we can attribute male "Fun" votes to two things: Some guys were guessing girls would like it, and some guys were hoping to sneak in.

    If they're going to do this kind of stuff, then they might as well not even have the prom because it seems pretty lame. Folks just need to lighten up.

    It's not lame if girls want to try it. Prom doesn't have to be about the opposite sex. As a parent of a daughter I'd feel... relieved. Friendships at that age can last longer than a romance will.

    I can understand the religious reasons for having an all-girl's prom, but here where I live...it would be completely boring for all us girls to attend a dance without guys thereto tell us how pretty we are and to dance the slow ones with us.

    Ok, I went to the prom a long time ago. But we all planned for months. We lived for the moment we made our big entrance, and the boyfriends eyes popped, and then he smiled. That was the most special feeling in the world. An all girl's prom. Lame, very lame. No way. My husband who went to an all boys military academy and never went to a prom made an interesting comment watching the young ladies and their dates one evening come and go during Prom season. He said it was a rehearsal for the wedding. The formal clothing, the flowers, the limos - think about it. I think he had a point.

    Ooooo....my stomach hurts. I was once in New Orleans on a business trip and stopped in to have a few beers at a strip club. A very attractive young black girl was giving me a lap dance when she very coyly was playing with her G-string and she asked me if I wanted to see her "chocolate taco"?? I fell off my seat for god's sake.

    They are just trying to ruin High School by making everything PC.

    Sometimes you have to inform people their religious beliefs mean nothing to the society at large and they just do not fit in. People should not always be bent to accommodate.

    Woman hate woman in close proximity. True story.

    WHY:
    * loud
    * opinionated
    * judgmental
    * easily offended

    If ya'll spent more time together, this wouldn't be a problem.

    Does paranoia and self deluding, misguided narcissism, have to ruin yet another golden day in the lives of our young people? Many people remember their prom as the last bastion of adolescence, and a decisive milestone in the journey towards adulthood. Do we really need another excuse to widen the rift between our children and ourselves. Logic would note that, even control can be too controlling....Just a thought...

    A "Prom" is supposed to be a special occasion. First there's the anticipation of "Will you be asked?" And then there's the quest to find the perfect dress, shoes, jewelry and of course the hair do. Why do all this if there are no boys there? Girls don't care about how everyone else looks. They care about how THEY look. Not saying that an all girl party can't be fun but it's not a "PROM". Kind of a rite of passage.

    When I went to prom, my wing man asked me to the dance. Two single guys supporting the other's best interests. Mind you, he went home with a lady and I got stuck with chaperone duty.
