PUBLIC OPINION > American Apparel's Transgender Model Is Great

SodaHead Living 2012/06/19 22:29:32
In honor of LGBT Pride Month, American Apparel debuted its first-ever transgender model, former "America's Next Top Model" contestant Isis King. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation praised the clothing company for its decision to include King, and hopes that it will help promote the phrase "Gay is OK." We wanted to know if the public thinks the campaign is a great idea, or just a gimmick.

Naturally, this is a controversial issue. We'll leave politics alone in the demographics this time, because it's clearly a determining factor, but in the end most people feel American Apparel's decision to use a transgender model was a good thing. Some respondents were uncomfortable with it, but others saw it as a step forward. One commenter wrote, "People need to not care what someone else's preference is, and worry about something worth while."

The Straight Stats

Homosexual voters were all for the use of a transgender model, as would be expected, but how did straight voters respond? Filtering out the LGBT vote, we found that straight voters were less than thrilled about the ads. It was still close, but 53% of the straight vote suggested American Apparel's use of King was just a gimmick.

Females Are Fine With It

Gender was almost as divisive as sexuality. While men were largely unimpressed with the ad, female voters strongly supported it, with more than two-thirds of the vote in favor. In the past, our polls have shown that women are typically much more comfortable with homosexuality, while men sometimes tend to be grossed out by it.

Older Voters Are Against It

Usually, when there's a stark difference between younger and older voters, the shift occurs somewhere around 45. However, in this case, the age difference was a little bit young. The vast majority of people over 35 voted against the ad, while a large number of voters under 35 were impressed. The difference was enormous -- approximately 43%.

    trangender gay i son model

My only issue with this is they were trying to tie homosexuality to transgendered people, not all gay people want to be the opposite sex, that's absurd... most gay people are perfectly happy as nature made them.... transgender is a totally separate issue from sexuality. I don't think someone's sexual preference makes them suddenly want to have their genitals surgically altered. I'm against sex changes, I think people should accept their natural sex... but despite my stance, of course we should accept them as human beings. Similarly, I may not agree with smokers smoking tobacco, but they are still people and deserve respect.

If she never said anything, we would have never has known she was once a man. I wonder what her voice sounds like, because that is one thing this never disappears with a sex change operation.

Clearly, it's a serious psychological issue here.
Why is it "wonderful" that a guy dresses up and has surgery to look like a woman?
What about men and women who have lots plastic surgeries to look more attractive? We call them freaks and tell them they should be happy who they are and how they look! Why is this any different!?

It's wonderful, because she's being who she wants to be no matter what people think. If you take an apple, pear, and a mango, yes there all different, but all delicious.

And the girl who has endless surgeries to look like Barbie is wonderful too right? Or the Bulimic or the Anorexic?
    Same diseases here, different manifestations.

They aren't the same "diseases." Maybe you should attempt to educate yourself on those who are transgendered before making such assumptions?

Lets see.. an Anorexic/Bulimic is someone who is so dissatisfied with how they look and who they are, they will put their lives in jeopardy to be that person they want to be.
The same people often have multiple plastic surgeries to help achieve this image.
Transgenders are also "so dissatisfied with themselves" they would go to even greater lengths to appear to be something they are not!
    They need help!
It's doesn't affect me in the least!
Not anymore than someone who is suicidally depressed, and don't tell me we shouldn't intervene on them with or without their consent!

Hmmm, interesting language, "masculinized brain matter" given the the brain is plastic and changes can and do occur in response to mood, experiences, and chemical imbalances. This study is far from complete and does not account fot "mind over matter," that is, the genuine belief that they are "the wrong gender" changing the actual structure of the brain.
It's not proof at all, just a bias on the part of the scientists and the journalist that wrote the article.

Really? So, explain transgender children to me. Explain to me how a kid can grow up feeling like the opposite gender before they even have an idea of gender roles.

Really? How does that explain transgendered children? Do you think they choose to live like that? Considering children don't have a true understanding of gender identity until around age seven, how does that explain those who identify as the opposite sex as young as a toddler?

No, I don't think they truly choose it, a very large percentage of transgenders and indeed, any kind of sexual deviancy is a response to childhood abuse.

She's a woman. Maybe not scientifically, but it doesn't matter. She chose to be a woman, so call her a woman. She is a woman at heart. Go ahead write a whole speech, dont expect me to read. Just be mature enough to realize not everyone has to be what you want them to.

A womans internal make up and chromosones determine that, not JUST her outward appearance...It is a hodge podge of woman pieces, it has no uterus nor ovaries...Its a man.....At heart, sorry that doen't make it a woman....My grandson has the heart of a superhero....But, he's still a 4 year pld boy that pretends he's superman....You can pretend to be anything, have a heart to be anything , but you DNA, chromosomes given by your creatoe IS the true identifier....Accept it...You'll be more at peace...but, by all means you CAN still pretend...

It not a problem to me unless someone tries to convince me of something I know is untrue...Some girls I worked with for 10 years were gay...We were pretty close...I liked her and she liked me...She confided in me ....I accepted her when others wouldn't...But don't try to convince me, this man is a woman, cause it isn't....Stop broadcasting like its some kind of honor....cause it isn't...and then get offended when someone PROVES a man that has surgery is STILL a man...If you're happy, fine... It is your right, but don't feel someone else is wrong when they DON'T agree nor accept it....Its their choice as well....

they are telling you she is a TRANSGENDER woman... reflecting both the past and the present. she once was a boy, transitioned to live a life as female... because of this transition, you would think there is something in the brain somewhere that is female? something somewhere that makes 'us' happy to be female? because of that, its out of respect, and pure human ignorance of how the brain operates, we are female.

but i guess for cynical people like you, you're goig to wait around until you have "proof" there is something in our brains that is female instead of believing us? correct? when we have proof, will you accept me as a female then?
  • Cat 1017 rylie_love 2012/06/20 23:56:53
    Cat 1017
Man...Man...Man...Its NOT a woman...In the the brain female?...What are you talking about?...I have no need for proof...I have two sons and they both are ALL male....I have 4 grandsons and they , TOO are all male...The only thing in your brain that is female , is the confusion you have..Its not up to me to accept you, one way or another....I know a male born a male is , JUST that...No matter how much they may want to be something else....
  • rylie_love Cat 1017 2012/06/21 00:08:27

so it comes down to respect then... you will never recognize any transperson whether it be male to female or female to male by their chosen gender. interesting.

reminecint of people once believing gay wasn't real and gay was a choice. its ok, you'll learn... i guess we just need to have a louder voice? in time my little internet friend, in time...
