PUBLIC OPINION > American Apparel's Transgender Model Is Great

SodaHead Living 2012/06/19 22:29:32
In honor of LGBT Pride Month, American Apparel debuted its first-ever transgender model, former "America's Next Top Model" contestant Isis King. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation praised the clothing company for its decision to include King, and hopes that it will help promote the phrase "Gay is OK." We wanted to know if the public thinks the campaign is a great idea, or just a gimmick.

Naturally, this is a controversial issue. We'll leave politics alone in the demographics this time, because it's clearly a determining factor, but in the end most people feel American Apparel's decision to use a transgender model was a good thing. Some respondents were uncomfortable with it, but others saw it as a step forward. One commenter wrote, "People need to not care what someone else's preference is, and worry about something worth while."

The Straight Stats

Homosexual voters were all for the use of a transgender model, as would be expected, but how did straight voters respond? Filtering out the LGBT vote, we found that straight voters were less than thrilled about the ads. It was still close, but 53% of the straight vote suggested American Apparel's use of King was just a gimmick.

Females Are Fine With It

Gender was almost as divisive as sexuality. While men were largely unimpressed with the ad, female voters strongly supported it, with more than two-thirds of the vote in favor. In the past, our polls have shown that women are typically much more comfortable with homosexuality, while men sometimes tend to be grossed out by it.

Older Voters Are Against It

Usually, when there's a stark difference between younger and older voters, the shift occurs somewhere around 45. However, in this case, the age difference was a little bit young. The vast majority of people over 35 voted against the ad, while a large number of voters under 35 were impressed. The difference was enormous -- approximately 43%.

My only issue with this is they were trying to tie homosexuality to transgendered people, not all gay people want to be the opposite sex, that's absurd... most gay people are perfectly happy as nature made them.... transgender is a totally separate issue from sexuality. I don't think someone's sexual preference makes them suddenly want to have their genitals surgically altered. I'm against sex changes, I think people should accept their natural sex... but despite my stance, of course we should accept them as human beings. Similarly, I may not agree with smokers smoking tobacco, but they are still people and deserve respect.

Looking at them again,I don't think they look as bad as I originally thought. I think they would look better or more feminine if they gained some weight. They are just too skinny. I say they because I don't want to say either he or she. Too much confusion.

You're making it entirely too complicated. How would you feel being forced to live a life which felt wrong to you? Making a mockery of their situation isn't something that will go over well with some folks. People have been raped and murdered because they felt they were born in the wrong body. Like that's a legitimate reason to take someone's life or ridicule them? I don't understand some people.

I never said we should make a mockery of them, I said they deserve respect despite what I think of their decisions to get sex reassignment surgery... not in those exact words but that's basically what I said.

Similarly, I don't expect straight people to understand or approve of me for being gay, they'll never understand how 2 men can love each other or two women... I just expect them to accept me as a fellow human being who deserves respect just the same.

I am simply against, any plastic surgery really.

I guess I'm in the minority here because I fully support it, if it makes the person feel more like themselves.

Sure it's awesome to be supportive of them. I'm just saying I don't get it... I don't think anyone can really fully comprehend what is going through their minds unless you yourself are a transgender person as well.

you say you don't agree with sex changes, but the people who have them are afflicted with a condition called gender identity disorder which makes them feel like they were born in the wrong body. if you had that problem you'd probably want the surgery to make you feel like who you were supposed to be. it must be terrible to feel like your body is a mistake. i commend you for disagreeing with it, but still accepting them as people that deserve respect, but i'm just saying you should think about how you would feel if that were you.

I mean I don't agree with it for me, I don't mean I want to oppress my stances onto others... that's inhumane... I'm also against tobacco use and tattoos but I know people would be miserable if they made them both illegal... look at the war on drugs, we're wasting billions of dollars and throwing hundreds of thousands of non-violent people into cages because we're oppressing people with what should be a personal choice to do or to not do drugs.

I completely agree with you regarding the war on drugs. If the drug addict steals something or kills someone or what have you, then yes, by all means, put them in jail. But if they are just buying and using drugs, I agree, it's a personal choice. I respect your stance that some things may not be right for you personally, but you accept others' right to do it. That's the way society should be. "I wouldn't personally do it, but more power to you if you want to do it" should be our mindset.

My only issue with this is assuming that transgendered people just "want to" be the opposite gender. It goes way deeper than that. Not all transgendered folks even have sex change surgery, but there is nothing wrong with having it.

If we use the argument that we should be as nature designed us, then people with mutations or disorders should just let it be too, people with bad eyesight shouldn't have it fixed because obviously nature intended for them to have bad eyesight.

Being transgendered is a disorder, which each individual can fix by their own means. Majority of trangendered individuals studied have shown to have the brain chemistry which resembles that of the opposite sex, proving that they indeed are actually "stuck in the wrong body".

The main reason I won't recommend sex change surgery today because the methods are in their early stages and the results aren't realistic. It may be another few hundred years before they evolve in this field to truly convert a woman to a man or vice versa... I'm sure, eventually a woman, if she truly "wants to" be a man, or however you'd like to phrase that...then she could be totally converted, genitals created from her own stem cells, DNA, etc... so it would become his own body that grew from the flesh of the person... if you think about it, today's sex changes are very primitive in what they will be some day... however we won't live for hundreds of years so I think it's best for one to just accept themselves as they are today, rather than subject themselves to a underdeveloped sex change procedure that just gets people's hopes up just to crush them over time as they realize what a mess they have made of themselves... and I don't totally blame them, marketing for this procedure sells it like a miracle cure, it's a very profitable procedure... but ultimately destructive.
