PUBLIC OPINION > 15 Is Old Enough to Wax

SodaHead Living 2012/07/10 20:00:00
Uni K Wax Centers in Florida and New York recently received criticism for releasing an ad that encourages "all girls 15 and younger" to wax by offering them discounted services. Critics were "disgusted" with the ad, alleging that it was "completely inappropriate" to encourage waxing at such a young age. We asked the public if it's too young to wax.

sodahead waxing

Most respondents felt that 15-year-old girls were old enough to wax. The Top Opinion put it bluntly: "Is it too old to shave? No? Then it's not too old to wax. What's with the stigma against waxing?" Critics argued that waxing shows an unhealthy concern with body image. Many suggested young girls would be better off spending their time having fun or doing their homework. But technically, doesn't waxing cut down on time spent shaving?

Men Mind the Age

Since many female voters have been faced with the decision themselves, they were quite a bit more sympathetic to young girls who want to try waxing. However, men were nearly split. Reading through the comments, it did seem that some male voters were under the impression that "waxing" is synonymous with "bikini wax," which may have affected the vote somewhat.

Teens Want to Have the Option

Naturally, the age group in question was perfectly fine with allowing themselves to wax. That doesn't necessarily mean they want to wax, just that 15 is old enough to make their own decision. Of course, most teens aren't parents, so they probably don't have the same perspective, but that doesn't make their opinion any less valuable.

Parents Play It Safe

As we suggested above, part of the reason older voters are more reluctant to let 15-year-old girls wax is because many of them are parents. When you're a parent, you're more concerned about the implications of seemingly innocuous things, like waxing or wearing makeup. It's not that waxing is particularly "inappropriate" as it is prematurely superficial.

Women and girls wax their legs, perhaps they didn't mention "pubic hair" because they were simply asking about legs.

If your body doesn't think it's too young to develop disgusting pubes, why would you think you are too young to get rid of it? I know I got rid of mine as soon as it appeared and still do. Pubes are disgusting and so is leg/arm pit hair. I don't understand parents who understand why their teen girls shave/wax their legs but not pubes. Crotch pubes have nothing whatsoever to do with sex anymore than leg and armpit pubes do.

Being 15 or 16 and having the crotch of an undeveloped 9-year old is what's disgusting... and pedophilic. That sensitive area is properly protected by pubic hair -- that's why it's there

LOL. Yeah, really. Or Howard is one of those men that like hairy woman. I've never understood why men want woman with nice smooth legs and armpits but a hairy snatch. He basically called me a pedophile because I got rid of my own when I was that age.. hahahaha.

No. Waxing is no big deal. I am more concerned about 15 year old girls and younger having unprotected sex. Sex causes pregnancy.

If they are "old enough" to shave, they are old enough to wax. It's just a different method of removing hair. Seeing as body hair grows in for most girls at about ten or eleven, I really don't see the controversy...Maybe you should also not let them use razors?

I think a lot of males don't know when girls start growing body hair because most girls start shaving it right as it grows, but a fifteen-year-old girl who hasn't started growing body hair is a rarity.

Is that a good thing though? I mean, do we just have to accept that? I guess I am just old-fashioned, but it just seems like there is a big difference between trying on mom's lipstick and stuffing bras and parents paying hard-earned cash to maintain "The Brazilian" on their daughters. I don't know... I only have sons (thank goodness), but I have nieces who are that age, and beyond never even conceiving something like this, we take it as a matter of duty as men in the family to let them and their "boyfriends" know that transgressions will be met with an appropriate response. I realize that girls this age in my day were not starting to "blossom" yet, and things are very different now, but just accepting sad and eventually disastrous things like this is only adding to the problem. Just because something "is" doesn't mean that we should roll over. We're American, not French! (sorry. Had to say it ;) )

Its not a brazilian. Again, that would be fondling a minor. Its not about boys, or sex, or some coming of age. Its about grooming and social normalcy. Not that I agree with feeling the need to wax or even shave. I grow very light blond hair and barley shave my legs at all. But for some women, especially those with darker/ coarser hair, I'd understand the desire. At any age. I don't see why its such a disastrous thing. It's just unwanted hair removal. No different then a young man shaving his face.

What does looking hot have to do with it? 8 year olds wear bathing suits. 14 year olds wear bathing suits. It doesn't have to be to look "hot". Have you never seen kids or teens at the beach? The thought of a 14 year old girl with pubes hanging out of her bikini line and hair under her armpits is disgusting. It is to look GOOD..period. Nothing to do with being hot or sexual. Kids start puberty as young as 8 and 12 these days. A 13 year old can have as much pubes on their body as a 20 year old. Why can't it be for personal hygene and cleanliness rather than sexual or hot? Maybe you are the one with the problem if you're finding a 14 year old hot because she waxed all her pubes.

God damn. I had no idea how far we had slid as a society... Far enough to where a group of internet slags will actually argue with me about little girls getting waxed for swimsuit weather. It's enough to make me want to go hide in the mountains like Zarathustra. If you people think it's a good idea to wax little kids so they look good in revealing outfits, then do it. I pity your children, your community, and the future of our species. Good luck and Godspeed...
