Who said you have to be a skinny minnie to wear a teeny bikini? Plus-size fashion blogger Gabi Gregg has posted a photo of herself in a "fatkini" and asked other readers of xojane.com to do the same. Some of the ladies look great, but critics say Gregg is "promoting an unhealthy weight."

fatkini 2

Gregg, however, thinks she's been misunderstood. "I’m all for health," the 25-year-old, who wears a size 18, told the "Today" show. "I think people should be really aware of what they’re putting in their bodies and try to get more active. The truth is, we have to live in our bodies and be happy with the bodies we have right now, regardless of where we are in our journey to health.

"So often in the media all we see are thin women in bikinis," she added. "I love my body. I think we should kind of reject these fashion rules about what we are and about what we are not allowed to wear."

She also said women pay too much attention to their weight when it comes to their health. "My measure for health is how good I feel," Gregg said. "The main thing is to judge how you feel and what you’re putting into your body, how active you are and not based on a number on a scale." Do you think women should rock their "fatkinis" with pride?

Of course they can change. "It's just their body type" is just an old, lame excuse I hear everywhere. I have a friend with thyroid who said to herself that she didn't want to look fat when she was a size 14, no matter how hard it was. And of course it was hard for her to lose all that weight, way harder than people without thyroid. But in the end, after years of hard work, she managed to shed those pounds and she's a size 2 now. It's not just their body type, anyone can become slim if they want to and never give up. Yes, anyone can help it, but willpower and determination to change... Ah! That's another thing.

Why exactly is it important to you and others that complete strangers are overweight to begin with? Shouldn't you be more concerned about the willpower and determination to change something about yourself? Ah! That's another thing.

Because people are always complaining that "they cannot lose weight so they are going to complain that being thin or at least average is impossible and you must be anorexic to do it". I think people are inventing seriously lame excuses to prevent actually working for something. And it is really annoying when people take pictures of themselves in "Fat Acceptance" posts, it is as they are subtly and faintly saying that thin is bad and fat is good.

Hmm, I see what you're saying. But not all overweight people and not all ultra thin people have a problem or do anything in particular that causes them to be that way. They just are. Not all overweight people are over eaters, lazy and unhealthy. Not all really thin people are anorexic, purge themselves or unhealthy. Unless you can take over another's body and mind or at least know them at a very personal level, you have no right to determine anything they say as "lame" or whether or not they are excuses because it really is hard for some to put on weight and it is really hard for some to lose it. The hardest part for any one of us is to accept ourselves. I think it becomes a problem when too many people are concerned with "being" accepted by others and too many just love to tear others apart because they don't fit their idea of attractive. Most people love variety in their lives. But when it comes to all the physical differences between people we fail miserably. And when we judge others, what are we truly saying about ourselves?

Size two is a bit too tiny, but I applaud your friend for her hard work. I have physical disabilities, but I went from a size 15 to a size ten..well ten is loose on me now. Its hard, it took years, but I'm doing it too.

Not everyone likes the body type that you like. Get over it already. Until you can prove perfection there is no such thing. INDIVIDUALS decide what is beautiful to them. Fact is beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Fact is you do not dictate to the world what is beautiful. With that said, time to do some work on your unhealthy mind.

I know a young woman who calls herself Curvalicious because she has embraced her body. No, she is not a size 6, but she works out at least three to four times a week, takes her children to the park to get involved with activities etc. She in no way is unhealthy. She is just larger than some others who are thin.

Thin doesn't equate health. Many plus-size people live healthy life styles and are as healthy or more so than their skinny counter-parts. Having the confidence to pose in a bikini in the first place says a lot about her emotional health. Don’t label her as psychologically defunct just because she likes herself and is proud of her outward appearance. If you have ever worn a pair a form fitting jeans, donned perfume, cologne or jewelry, or painted our nails please feel free to wear any label you place on the model.

Oh yeah, people should definitely praise a higher risk for heart disease and other health problems? Maybe children should be shown that you don't need to be fat to avoid anorexia and that you should strive for a healthy weight, somewhere in between.

"Promoting an unhealthy weight"... possibly less so than all the dozens of anorexic/bulimic models which are shown every day without comment.

As a mother of a beautiful, naturally thin 6 yr old who is happy and unaware at this point of her body as anything but something that allows her to enjoy life, I want her to see all different shapes as being of worth in society. Do we "hide" an entire segment of society from the camera or impose a different dress code simply because of a standard? As for myself, I am just recovered from 20 years of anorexia and am finally a "normal" weight and I shudder to think of my daughter suffering from any type of eating disorder. Recovery begins when judgement stops...especially of the self.

Needing to post a scantily clad self-portrait, means there is still too much emotion and self-esteem tied up in what others think. She isn't promoting obesity. It is about acceptance. It is an uphill battle though. There are so many billions of dollars invested in making woman feel like we are not good enough. And it is done very successfully, preying on insecurity. These investors have many 'followers' who never miss a chance to be hateful about someone elses superficial appearance. We should use our time and energy on things that matter. There is no grand prize for leaving a smaller pile of ashes behind.

Anorexics, the obese, and all women in between are "real" women... it's just a matter of preference. I prefer thin women, you prefer larger women... they're still real women.

I thought she went straight for that because she felt the need to plaster pictures of herself in a bikini online... nothing to do with weight. I got the impression that Sue would have said that about a thin woman doing the same thing, too. How about YOU stop being judgemental and assuming her intentions? She wasn't bashing fat women at all...

Thanks : ) Bashing anyone because of their physical appearance is offensive. I've been guilty of it myself. Being a large person I have been one of the worst offenders against others who are large. Changing myself is the toughest job I've ever taken on : )

Sorry Sue. I owe you an apology. Inquisitive Kat called me out on my comment below to you. I got defensive and judgmental towards you because I came from an emotional stand point which prevented me from properly comprehending your point which is a very good and true one. I'm embarrassed but that is not half as bad as being an a**hole. Please forgive me.

I REALLY wish there was a third choice. I mean, it is awesome in a way, but...jeez! The only people who pose for pictures are either (more commonly) very underweight or (less commonly) moderately overweight. Why aren't there any medium size people posing in bikinis for blogs? It seems to me like nowadays people are becoming either overweight or anorexic more often partially because the medium build is never celebrated.

I think both the skinny and the fat is promoting an unhealthy weight. I'm just pissed that hardly ever someone mentions the skinny models having an unhealthy weight.
