Who said you have to be a skinny minnie to wear a teeny bikini? Plus-size fashion blogger Gabi Gregg has posted a photo of herself in a "fatkini" and asked other readers of xojane.com to do the same. Some of the ladies look great, but critics say Gregg is "promoting an unhealthy weight."

fatkini 2

Gregg, however, thinks she's been misunderstood. "I’m all for health," the 25-year-old, who wears a size 18, told the "Today" show. "I think people should be really aware of what they’re putting in their bodies and try to get more active. The truth is, we have to live in our bodies and be happy with the bodies we have right now, regardless of where we are in our journey to health.

"So often in the media all we see are thin women in bikinis," she added. "I love my body. I think we should kind of reject these fashion rules about what we are and about what we are not allowed to wear."

She also said women pay too much attention to their weight when it comes to their health. "My measure for health is how good I feel," Gregg said. "The main thing is to judge how you feel and what you’re putting into your body, how active you are and not based on a number on a scale." Do you think women should rock their "fatkinis" with pride?

"Bitter" is right when describing some parts of your comment. Not all women have curves for various reasons, guess they're not real right? And realness isn't really something that you can determine from appearance or body type anyway, a person could have fake boobs, hair, etc, and still have a genuine personality.

From what all Gabi is saying, i dont believe she's promoting unhealthy weight, but instead self acceptance. Our society is telling us we have to cover up ourselves whenever there is something "wrong" with us. I'm not considered overweight, but i do have a tendency to put on extra pounds durring the winter and durring that time or right after when spring comes around, its hard to want to wear tight clothes or bikinis because society tells us to hide all that. What Gabi is trying to get across is to be proud of the body your in, regardless what shape.

Pornography is a much lower standard, probably the lowest, that a woman can obtain. I'd bet a million bucks you don't have a problem with porn.

    Lower standard?
You should want a person because of what they are, not if they look "hot enough".
Porn? ever heard of it? thats a LOW standard.

This should provide people with the motivation to get up. It helps to get motivated and excited about heading down the road to being healthy when you feel good and comfortable in your own skin.

I am a sz. 18 and think this photo is beautiful. The 'healthy weight' being promoted by critics looks more like heroin chic than health. No Thanks.

The woman at the top of this article cannot compare to the women in the lower half of your picture. The former is fat, the latter filled out, toned and well-proportioned.

Uh..those women on the bottom are beautiful and curvy. They have gorgeous shapes...but they don't have the disgusting rolls the women in the above pictures have. Gabbi doesn't look too bad, but she would be stunning of she lost more weight.

Nothing wrong with being a size 18 -- if it's the right size for a person's frame. We shouldn't overburden our skeleton with too much fat. Studying this woman's picture, I see a beautiful face, a cute confident attitude, but I also see a young woman who's overweight and if she doesn't get it under control, she'll be a good candidate for diabetes in 20 years.

When I look at her face, shoulders, and hands, I can tell you that this woman is not meant to be a size 18 at her age. I think she should aim for a size 12 to 14 -- and she should start working toward it while she's young enough for it to be a reasonable and easy goal to reach. I don't think she should be ashamed of her body, but she should be actively working to reduce the body fat for her own health. And I am NOT promoting "skinny"...just healthy.

Being overweight does not guarantee that someone will get diabetes. I am larger than her and I am 52 years old. Most of my family have been overweight. My grandmother is now 93 years old. She says we come from good Italian stock. People should not be so concerned about others who are quite happy and healthy just because they don't fit into what they consider right. Just like I don't care what size you are. Most of the human race should have their eyes removed. They use them too much against others.

She's not using her eyes against this woman, she's being realistic. Smoking doesn't guarantee lung cancer, but we still know it's better to be avoided.

I'm sorry, I missed your reply...didn't mean to ignore it. Your right, being overweight does not guarantee that someone will get diabetes, but a lot of belly fat is a warning sign. I don't care what size a person is -- it makes no difference as to how I see them or how I feel about them. I am only trying to give an honest answer to this poll. Like I said, if your frame is strong and large enough to carry the weight, that's fine...you're just a large person. My frame wouldn't be able to carry that much weight...and in THIS photo of Gabi, she appears to me to have a medium frame, but she wears a large size. That's my observation.

Diabetes is a problem in MY family so I'm sensitive to the problems that people have with diabetes. I worry a lot about my sister; her diabetes is bad and severely interferes with her daily life (I have many friends with diabetes and not all of them are overweight). My sister happens to be overweight, but she has other health issues that limit her movement and her metabolism is slow. But I'll tell you this, she is quick to urge her children and grandchildren to watch their weight and what foods they eat to help avoid the possibility of getting diabetes. It's much easier to prevent with healthy balanced eating -- than controlling diabetes after...

I've learned a lot about diabetes, its causes, and how to eat to keep it under control because I love a number of people who have diabetes and I want to be supportive of their efforts to eat properly to control their disease. At family events, I make a effort to bring foods that I know the diabetics in my family can feel good about eating -- because I love them!

One doesn't need to be a doctor to see the obvious. You don't need to be sarcastic...I do think she's a beautiful woman, but it's obvious that she's carrying too much weight for her frame. Anyone who's being really honest can see that. Study the photo.

It's not easy to keep one's weight down in today's world where we sit too much at a computer and drive everywhere. It takes an extra effort...but for our health, we need to make that effort.

Some overweight women are beautiful. These aren't curvy to me, they are big and beautiful..if they are beautiful. Some big women are curvy, but not all. Curvy is having a waist that is smaller than your hips, I've seen big women that had a nice shape..but many are just shaped like beach balls.

I just don't see how those women could feel comfortable in their bodies like that. The most I've weighed when not pregnant is about 170. I felt extremely uncomfortable and fatigued. When I dropped down to 130 I felt quite a bit more comfortable, I move faster and I like my reflection more. Now I just need to get into taking pictures again.

And that gallery is full of 'nearly fat' or 'skinny fat' girls who aren't even that fat. They're gorgeous. No reason not to flaunt what you've got.
