Who said you have to be a skinny minnie to wear a teeny bikini? Plus-size fashion blogger Gabi Gregg has posted a photo of herself in a "fatkini" and asked other readers of xojane.com to do the same. Some of the ladies look great, but critics say Gregg is "promoting an unhealthy weight."

fatkini 2

Gregg, however, thinks she's been misunderstood. "I’m all for health," the 25-year-old, who wears a size 18, told the "Today" show. "I think people should be really aware of what they’re putting in their bodies and try to get more active. The truth is, we have to live in our bodies and be happy with the bodies we have right now, regardless of where we are in our journey to health.

"So often in the media all we see are thin women in bikinis," she added. "I love my body. I think we should kind of reject these fashion rules about what we are and about what we are not allowed to wear."

She also said women pay too much attention to their weight when it comes to their health. "My measure for health is how good I feel," Gregg said. "The main thing is to judge how you feel and what you’re putting into your body, how active you are and not based on a number on a scale." Do you think women should rock their "fatkinis" with pride?

If it is a appropriate swim suit like she has on. There are some women I have seen in bikinis made for someone that is a size 8 and they are a size 18.

If she feels healthy and has no illnesses and does everything necessary to take care of her body...Then she IS healthy and this is the norm for her....Why should she starve herself to fit a particular look...She looks great ...My Dad use to say the only thing that wants a bone is a dog...I agree....

It's sad... I blame a lot of obesity on doctors, as well as other factors... doctors are constantly telling overweight people that they have nothing to worry about.
When I was over 350 lbs, my doctor NEVER mentioned my weight (probably because I didn't have anything like high blood pressure or high blood sugars or anything of the sort). Now, at around 170 lbs, my doctor has told me I really don't "need" to lose any more weight (then again, she's probably a good 20 lbs heavier than I am). I'm only 5'3", so at this weight, I still wear a 14-16 pants... the hell I don't need to lose more weight! If I listened to my doctor, I would be maintaining this size... because I over-exercise and calorie restrict and fast (to the point of some idiot psychiatrist in the hospital diagnosing me with anorexia), she things losing more weight is a 'bad idea'.
People are not held accountable, even by their doctors.

Hooray for you for taking your health into your own hands. You should be so proud of yourself..I am.The problem with the Doctor's I believe is some care more about money than patients. An obese patient will have more health issues down the road meaning they make more money.Unethical people cross every profession yes and sad.

Maybe in the US... we have free healthcare here, so doctors are doing everything they can to keep us out of there, usually... I think a lot of them just buy into the whole fat acceptance attitude that's taken over. Hell, the "awesome" votes for this question are overwhelming.
And thanks... I am kind of proud about the weight loss/getting in shape. :-)

Just thought i'd throw this out there..... Heroin itself isn't toxic to the human body. Does less damage to tissues etc that Alcohol.

Heroine may cause less damage but it certainly isn't exactly healthy by any means.

It's the lifestyle that comes with heroin that is toxic. Needle sharing, lack of exercise etc.

But yeah it's not healthy. But does it matter? Is it for you or I to tell someone else how they should live their life?
  • Jazzy Diana 2012/05/31 20:38:41

All i meant by it is that no one has a room to judge another human being. And especially not by the way they choose to look. If that person is happy being 300 or 100 pounds they are healthy in my book. Its worse to be stressed out about the way you look and what other people will think of you.

Why does it have to be one extreme or the other? Maintaining a normal weight that falls within the recomended health chart should be what everyone strives for..BTW b*tch runs the entire gamut of sizes.

You just called a woman fat. Who are you to judge. And btw if you really knew all that you claim to you would also know weight and height charts also go by age. And they have changed over the years. What is considered to be "plus size" used to be beautiful and the ideal weight but now a size 8 is considered to be a plus size.

She admitted to being fat-did you miss that? Perhaps I could have written plus-sized.Really would that have been any better received? I think not. I not only understand them and yes they have changed over the years for the better reflecting what has been learned through advances in medicine. You're incorrect that a size 8 is considered plus size in the modeling world it's defined as a size 12 a size 8 would still be considered too big for modeling because sample sizes have shrunk to an unhealthy 0-2.

Click the link, pretty sure she calls herself fat, and talks about fat girls...
So what, it's only okay for "plus size" people to use the word "fat"?
She called her fat... which she is... what's so bad about that? It's not like she called her a whale, or a tub of lard... she used the correct term.

Well, there's "Plus Modeling" Which is actually 8-12. While regular "Straight-Size" is 0-4, with 34-24-34 measurements.

...You completely misread. I was stating that Plus modeling starts at size 8, while straight modeling usually has to have the measurements of 34-24-34.

I did. I just posted this on another question. These are the top 10 plus sized models I don't believe any of them are any where an 8 or even a 12 which is the standard I have to add while a 34" chest may be small a 24"waist and 34" hips isn't too thin.IMO. top plus sized models
  • ~Doll P... AM 2012/06/02 16:11:32
    ~Doll Princess~
What size do you believe them to be? They don't look to be an 8, more like 14, but I am a model and I frequent professional/hobbyist forums, and believe me, I've seen the discussions of Plus Models as well as the normal 'Fashion size'

Oh, I agree if one is naturally like that, or they can healthfully get down to that. I have a 24 inch waist myself, but my hips are an inch too big, so ..XD

What I want? No they should strive to be healthy.A woman with that much excessive weight is far from that and is headed for serious risks.

You can be overweight but still be physically fit. But yeah, people should try and keep to a healthy weight... but at the end of the day it's their choice. Not for you to demand they change. People are people, it's in their nature to be different.

I did not 'demand' I wrote "Everyone should' strive' for a healthy weight" big difference. My issue more so than the one at hand is the hypocrisy. People have no problem calling thin women all kinds of names anorexic, bulimic, body of a 6 yr.old boy, stick figure add my favorite from this very thread that if she's a D cup they must be fake or lying about it come on read through these comments .Yet write the word fat when the women in the article self describes herself as such by using 'fatkini' and people will jump all over you..
  • Vieuphoria AM 2012/06/01 13:43:51 (edited)
    Vieuphoria
It's not that big of a difference.

So you have an issue with people calling other people anorexic etc, so rather than just accepting it and moving on, you decide to act exactly the same to a different group of people?
