Pizza Patrón Giving Away Free Pizzas to Spanish Speakers: Fair or Foul?

Hablas español? You're in luck. Pizza Patrón, a pizza chain headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is giving away 80,000 large pepperoni pizzas on June 5 to customers who order in Spanish. And not everybody is happy about it, USA Today reports.

pizza patron

"It seems to punish people who can't speak Spanish, and I resent that," Peter Thomas, chairman of the Conservative Caucus, which advocates English as the nation's spoken language, tells USA Today. "In public areas, people should be speaking English, and that includes pizza parlors."

But Andrew Gamm, brand director at Pizza Patrón, says the move is exactly what it appears to be -- a publicity stunt. And a smart one at that: 70 percent of Pizza Patrón's customer base is Spanish-speaking. "It makes perfect sense for us," Gamm tells the paper. "We're trying to make our bond with the Hispanic community stronger." We're not really sure what the big fuss is about... anyone can go on the Internet and figure out how to order a pizza in Spanish. Do you find the giveaway offensive?

So...discrimination is cool as long as it fits into certain criteria, such as being against English speakers?

If they said English speaking customers only, there would be hell to pay.

This is why English needs to be declared the official language. Anywhere else requires you to learn the language or have someone assist in translation...or at least use a translating dictionary. Here it seems a trend to expect the country to accommodate the other languages so they don't have to learn ours.

I think that's a cool idea. You could easily go on google translate and order a pizza and it could be fun for your kids too.

Bad, bad, bad! Now we are encouraging speaking Spanish in the US? Not a good idea so close to the border to show preference for people that my be illegal immigrants.

Just because someone speaks Spanish doesn't make them ilegal. I also love how people assume every Hispanic person is illegal. Anyone who comes from a country into another country without permission is illegal, which means anyone could be one. Even Americans can be illegal immigrants in other countries.

Be aware, If it is determined that if someone can only speak Spanish, they might be determined to be illegal, rounded up and summarily deported.

It's technically common place for an American to speak American-English in the U.S. Why should you be rewarded for something you're suppose to be able to do. Speaking spanish is not as widely done in The US as it is in Spanish speaking countries. That's like giving away free pizza for tieing your shoe (though I doubt many people know how to do) dumbass Americans.

Maybe THAT would be discriminating. I think they've noticed a very low percentage of hispanic customers (those prefer the spicy mexican food) & are just attracting their attention. The advantages of being in a free country where businesses freely compete. I've noticed an unnecessary nationalistic reaction (not on your comment) on most responses to this poll.

They are only doing it for one day out the whole year. You are acting like they are doing a conspiracy to alienate English speaking people. It is pizza. We have bigger issues to worry about.

Now, if they did Russian (or Italian, duh!), it would be funny and cool. But given certain circumstances in Texas, I think doing the Spanish at this moment in time is in questionable taste.

It not favoritism it's only one day. If they would do it everyday then yes that would be favoritism. It's just a way to try to get there name out there a bit more. If they would have chosen a different language no one would have cared.

But it's just as fair for me, who no hablo, to order my pizza somewhere else!

Now what's foul is for the elections division to give any kind of free stuff to anyone who asks for an absentee ballot in Spanish. What's foul is for the government to transact its business in a language other than English. And what would be really foul would be for the government to mess around with pizza orders policy, in either direction.

Geez, it doesn't have to be fluent, they're not asking you to hold an entire conversation. The person taking your order will probably reply in english, it's just a fun giveaway. Like giving a keyword for a discount or ordering off a secret menu at in n' out. Calmate! (uh... calmatan? calmatais?)

they own the pizzas, they should be able to give them away to anyone, for any reason they choose. but would it work both ways? if i gave free pizzas only to those who speak english would it be a problem? i have a feeling their just might be a little criticism.

It's a business and they should be allowed to do whatever the heck they want to do. If people really don't think it's good idea, then they're free to take their business elsewhere or even organize a boycott. But, really, it seems like a non-issue.

What a load of fuss over nothing, they even said they would tell them the sentence if they didn't know. I also find it hilarious how some of the people that are complaining about it can't even form a properly structured sentence with correct grammar and spelling. Irony in its purest form.

They're not discriminating based on age, ethnicity, on sexual orientation or gender identity, on religiousness or race. They're asking people to come in and order in Spanish. Google translate your order and write it down on a cue card. If it is as some say that a similar event for English speakers would be discriminated against, then it's important to protect the rights of that company owner to GIVE his or her product away for FREE.

It's only about publicity, nothing discriminating I hope. "Patrón" means "Boss" in Spanish. Sin embargo creo que la idea va a atraer a los consumidores que antes no tenían conocimiento de los buenos sabores de esta pizzería. No hay que pensar que se trata de una maniobra en contra de alguien.

It's a slap in the face to people who were born and raised in America and choose to speak the language most Americans speak.
