Pizza Patrón Giving Away Free Pizzas to Spanish Speakers: Fair or Foul?

Hablas español? You're in luck. Pizza Patrón, a pizza chain headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is giving away 80,000 large pepperoni pizzas on June 5 to customers who order in Spanish. And not everybody is happy about it, USA Today reports.

pizza patron

"It seems to punish people who can't speak Spanish, and I resent that," Peter Thomas, chairman of the Conservative Caucus, which advocates English as the nation's spoken language, tells USA Today. "In public areas, people should be speaking English, and that includes pizza parlors."

But Andrew Gamm, brand director at Pizza Patrón, says the move is exactly what it appears to be -- a publicity stunt. And a smart one at that: 70 percent of Pizza Patrón's customer base is Spanish-speaking. "It makes perfect sense for us," Gamm tells the paper. "We're trying to make our bond with the Hispanic community stronger." We're not really sure what the big fuss is about... anyone can go on the Internet and figure out how to order a pizza in Spanish. Do you find the giveaway offensive?

So...discrimination is cool as long as it fits into certain criteria, such as being against English speakers?

If they said English speaking customers only, there would be hell to pay.

This is why English needs to be declared the official language. Anywhere else requires you to learn the language or have someone assist in translation...or at least use a translating dictionary. Here it seems a trend to expect the country to accommodate the other languages so they don't have to learn ours.

For Pasta's sake, it's about as discriminatory as giving a coupon for free ice cream to a kid who wins a spelling bee.

Pizza Parton has stated that you don't even have to order in good Spanish. Really, you just have to make an effort. (Like type "I want a pizza" into Google Translate.) You already have to order things in English most of the time in the United States, just because most people are not bilingual. It's not like they are saying you have to be white to use their bathroom.

I say it's fine, and I feel bad for them for how many free pizzas they will have to give away now that this story had blown up so big. (Somehow I don't think this would have been as big of a deal if they were asking people to speak Italian to get a free pizza, and that's not really any different.)

People bitch and moan about everything, get a tougher shell, gosh. Anyways, it's not like they're saying only people who are of Hispanic decent can order pizza. Just look up the translation or ask somebody their how to say it. If you still have a problem then you probably should just get over it, it's pizza for gods sake.

All the more reason to learn Spanish. This is a free promotion. Also, it isn't that hard to order food in another language. There must be many Spanish phrase books in Dallas, include a local library.

While I totally advocate speaking English, I don't think this is punishing people. It's something the pizza parlor decided to do as a publicity stunt, as they said. Anyone can learn how to order a pizza in Spanish. It's not excluding non-native speakers from having a chance at winning. It's not discrimination to have certain criteria met to enter a giveaway, just like most giveaways require you to be 18 or over.

There is nothing stopping any English speaker from learning a simple phrase or two in Spanish except themselves. If I lived near one, I would totally go down there and order in Spanish. Why not? It sounds like it'd be fun.

People need to stop making such a big deal out of nothing, and stop making the simplest things into arguments about racism and politics. Neither really has to do with what the pizza parlor is doing.

its discriminatory, i mean i wouldn't care if we could do the same with english speaking.

i mean we can't call people black, but we can call eachother white? some places you can't say blackboard becaue it could "offend" a black person, put its ok to say whiteboard? give me a break! i long for the day where people (liberals) stop trying to make every word in our vocabulary discriminatory,

They're not saying that only Hispanics are going to get free pizza they're saying that if you order in Spanish you'll get one. Just google translate it and they will give you a free pizza. If you're too lazy to do that then that's too bad cuz everyone else will get a free pizza except you ;)

thinking about your post.......you know what....I think you are right!!!!!!!!

but there is an irony behind all these black, white and Hispanic crap......we have a black/white president, we have two candidates one wants a second term (that maybe won't win) the other.......the son of a Mexican that wants to become the new president......do you see the irony......?

I also see the irony in the fact that the republicans are so against illegal immigrants, yet they're the ones that employ must of them just so they wouldn't have to pay them minimum wage.

They are a private entity and they have the right to run their business as they see fit, with due deference to the law of course. If you do not approve of their business decision, then don't buy their pizzas! For the record, I don't approve, and if this restaurant were located in my area, I would make it a point to take my business elsewhere!

Did you know America was based off of immigrants. What you're basically doing is saying get rid of your culture and take on mine or get out of my country. You're probably one of those hypocritical people that criticizes cultures that get rid of others. Sorry people can't get the frack out because frack isn't a word. They will stay because you can't do anything about it.

Are you pissed because you can't get a free pizza? Just asking because your comment is full of what is making Americans so hated abroad where all languages are very welcome and this type of business publicities are common. I can account for that.

You're right. While in the US the word 'America' is considered a synonymous of the 'United States', abroad it represents and belongs to a whole continent (Northern, Central & Southern). The same continent Christopher Columbus discovered even though he landed in 'Central American' islands.
  • TygaLuv... George-2 2012/05/31 22:38:16

Its not a synonym of the united states. Its called the United States of America which means the united states are IN america not that it IS america.
  • George-2 TygaLuv... 2012/05/31 23:03:03

I know that, but when one hears for example "God bless America" one can only imagine it's being used as a synonym (or synonymous) of the US. Abroad, 'America' represents the whole continent.

Seriously is the free pizza part really an issue, or is this just some kind of ploy to turn all Americans against immigrants. Most of you people are just mad you can't get free pizza.
