Pizza Patrón Giving Away Free Pizzas to Spanish Speakers: Fair or Foul?

Hablas español? You're in luck. Pizza Patrón, a pizza chain headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is giving away 80,000 large pepperoni pizzas on June 5 to customers who order in Spanish. And not everybody is happy about it, USA Today reports.

pizza patron

"It seems to punish people who can't speak Spanish, and I resent that," Peter Thomas, chairman of the Conservative Caucus, which advocates English as the nation's spoken language, tells USA Today. "In public areas, people should be speaking English, and that includes pizza parlors."

But Andrew Gamm, brand director at Pizza Patrón, says the move is exactly what it appears to be -- a publicity stunt. And a smart one at that: 70 percent of Pizza Patrón's customer base is Spanish-speaking. "It makes perfect sense for us," Gamm tells the paper. "We're trying to make our bond with the Hispanic community stronger." We're not really sure what the big fuss is about... anyone can go on the Internet and figure out how to order a pizza in Spanish. Do you find the giveaway offensive?

So...discrimination is cool as long as it fits into certain criteria, such as being against English speakers?

If they said English speaking customers only, there would be hell to pay.

This is why English needs to be declared the official language. Anywhere else requires you to learn the language or have someone assist in translation...or at least use a translating dictionary. Here it seems a trend to expect the country to accommodate the other languages so they don't have to learn ours.

If somebody wants to give away pizza then that is their business. As long as taxpayer money isn't used, its OK with me.

I am a Conservative, and yes, it should be allowed.

That said, I won't be ordering a pizza from them any time soon. All actions have consequences.

I'm checking "fair" only because I truly believe that a store belongs to its owners and if those owners want to celebrate the Spanish language or whatever, then they are totally free to do so. Frankly, though, it is pretty "foul" to give out 80,000 pizzas only to Spanish-speaking patrons. If I were a regular patron of that particular restaurant, you'd better believe I'd take my business elsewhere and be sure to let them know why. But, in the end, it's the owner's right to do that. Dumb idea, though, not what I'd consider a great business decision.

If it was the other way around, a majority English speaking place giving rewards to people who only spoke English, there would be an uproar. How is this reverse discrimination any different?

It's certainly discriminatory, but not in a way that cannot be overcome by anyone who really wants a free pizza.

“Yo quiero un pizza con salchichón” should do the trick.

Fair to me. I would learn the few words necessary to order the pizza. Sounds like fun and it's something different. Una pizza de pepperoni grande por favor. I'm sure if someone didn't get it exactly right but they tried they would still give them the pizza. People are so sensitive and offended by everything these days.

Well, the name of this pizza chain, "Pizza Patron," and the fact that it's headquartered in Dallas, Texas, should be the first indication that it caters to Spanish-speaking customers. IMO, the owners of this company should be able to operate their business anyway they want to, including encouraging people to order pepperoni pizzas in Spanish on June 5th. Of course, I also think it's fair for business owners to deny service to customers who order something in any language but English. I remember hearing about a bar in Tennessee where the proprietor put up a sign saying that he would serve only customers who could speak English, and of course, every Hispanic organization in America came out of the woodwork to make the owner cease and desist from this practice. Hey, fair is fair.

Sounds fair, it's their business. There is a reason I've never gotten pizza at Patron anyway and here is a reason I will still never get it in the future either. I hope immigration officers are waiting outside every Patron in Dallas though.

It's a private business, so the owner can do whatever they want.
It's no different than giving away food and beverages to those who have birthdays and come in for a bite, or wedding anniversaries, or ...........
The last town hubby and I lived in had an Irish pub that did the same thing for those that could speak even a little Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) on St. Paddy's Day. It's nothing new.

It's their business, they can run it any way they want. I am kinda bothered by the number of Chistians who think we should tell these owners how to run their business. What if a pizza place wanted to give a free pizza to those who could answer a bible question? For now we have a free market system, if you don't like their ad buy your pizza at another place.

Reminds me of that old joke:

What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages? Trilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages? Bilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks 1 language? American. ^‿^

But seriously, many of my American friends speak more than one language. It's a good skill to have. Don't confuse it with the importance of speaking English.

This is just as silly as saying "because walking is the most important, there is no benefit to knowing how to swim" or "because talking is the most important, there is no benefit to knowing how to sing."

Note that I said knowing English is important. That doesn't mean there is no benefit to knowing any other language.

English is my best language. But that did not prevent me from learning some German, Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese.

Sorry, but we have enough division over this issue already, so WHY fuel the fire? In this country, people are expected to learn English to conduct business. This seems in bad taste. I am wondering how much business they will lose over this by people boycotting them for it. I do not believe in discriminating over race, colour, sexual orientation or religion, but I strongly believe this country needs to protect the spoken language so we can all communicate with each other.

Of course it's fair! It's a privately-owned business which can therefore make up any rules it wants to, as long as it doesn't violate federal law. It's the same as "Ladies' Night" or other bar plans to increase patronage.

I honestly see nothing wrong with this. So many other countries learn 2 to 3 other languages, and we are arrogant and demand that everyone speak "our" language. Which technically isn't ours...its German and Scandanavian influenced. People need to stop making such a big deal over little things, we have more important issues to face than freakin' pizza. Also, this is a PRIVATE BUSINESS...they can do whatever the hell they want. What if they made a promo saying "All people born on February 14th, buy 1 get 1 free tomorrow." Consider "Ladies Night" at many restaurants....I suppose that is discriminatory as well!
