Pizza Patrón Giving Away Free Pizzas to Spanish Speakers: Fair or Foul?

Hablas español? You're in luck. Pizza Patrón, a pizza chain headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is giving away 80,000 large pepperoni pizzas on June 5 to customers who order in Spanish. And not everybody is happy about it, USA Today reports.

"It seems to punish people who can't speak Spanish, and I resent that," Peter Thomas, chairman of the Conservative Caucus, which advocates English as the nation's spoken language, tells USA Today. "In public areas, people should be speaking English, and that includes pizza parlors."

But Andrew Gamm, brand director at Pizza Patrón, says the move is exactly what it appears to be -- a publicity stunt. And a smart one at that: 70 percent of Pizza Patrón's customer base is Spanish-speaking. "It makes perfect sense for us," Gamm tells the paper. "We're trying to make our bond with the Hispanic community stronger." We're not really sure what the big fuss is about... anyone can go on the Internet and figure out how to order a pizza in Spanish. Do you find the giveaway offensive?

So...discrimination is cool as long as it fits into certain criteria, such as being against English speakers?

If they said English speaking customers only, there would be hell to pay.

This is why English needs to be declared the official language. Anywhere else requires you to learn the language or have someone assist in translation...or at least use a translating dictionary. Here it seems a trend to expect the country to accommodate the other languages so they don't have to learn ours.

And if you're not American, you should at least know that the United States is great as a result of immigrants. And thanks to the 'United States of America' the whole world isn't currently speaking German.

With the disrespectful way you talk to everyone else, if I were to meet you on the street I wouldn't be hesitant to give you a piece of my mind. Alas, we live so far apart from each other that you haven't got much to worry about. Count your blessings.

Sí, hablo español, but this is discrimination. It's not fair that people who don't speak Spanish don't have a chance for free pizza. :/

Aw, come on, it's like you have to recite poetry in Spanish! Three ridiculous words: "Pizza por favor". Where I live, businesses come up with incredible publicity ideas to attract attention. Everybody's amused to comply, it's fun. So what's happening in the land of the free and the brave? A little insecure maybe?
  • Calvin ... George-2 2012/06/01 14:09:36
    Calvin Harris ✌
Why Spanish and nit German, huh? Plus what if they start a conversation. "pizza por favor" will not help. Trust me, as a hispanic, I know how most hispanics are. This is discriminating.
  • George-2 Calvin ... 2012/06/01 14:41:09 (edited)
    George-2
Congrats for being Hispanic, hope you're proud & away from the 'real discrimination' against you in certain US areas. If they do require a conversation, which is a ridiculous presumption, then you give them the finger & walk away. But you can't base a discrimination accusation on unproven facts. They could've also said 'free pizza' for 65 & up seniors or public school teachers, etc. Why Spanish? Because it has a Spanish name: "Boss Pizza". The other sign phrase: " 'Ready' Drive Through" also points to S P A N I S H. At a KFC (a US franchise) restaurant in South America, a publicity stunt required patrons order in English for a free '6 piece combo' a whole Tuesday. Not a single 'discrimination' accusation!
  • Calvin ... George-2 2012/06/01 23:19:52
    Calvin Harris ✌
You may think it's ridiculous, but like I've said, most Spanish speakers will try to start a conversation! I know what I'm saying! I don't know the English translation for the word "cabrones", but that's what they are!! Specially in Texas! Discrimination here is high. Many white people hate hispanics, Mexicans in general, and many hispanics hate white people as well. Not all. Oh, and did I mention I'm from Texas? See, I know my facts. I know the typical person here in Texas. Then again, notice how I didn't say "all."

It's discrimination if you can barely speak it. It says Spanish speakers, not people who only know 3 words in Spanish.

Perhaps. But when these people tend to start a conversation they will know the person is not a Spanish speaker. There's a lot of people who have try to speak Spanish to me and it's not easy. I can't even understand them!! They rather get a translator. Even me, a native Spanish speaker, can't translate some Spanish words to English. If I say it's not easy, IT'S NOT EASY! So stop saying it like it's a piece of cake.
