'Perfect' Plane Seat Pinpointed: Where Do You Prefer to Sit on an Airplane?

These days—unless you’re flying first class—airplane travel is bound to be at least somewhat uncomfortable. But, getting the seat of your choice can make the journey more tolerable. And according to a recent study by Skyscanner, there is one seat in particular that passengers are desperate to claim.

6A, which the travel search site deemed “the perfect seat” on a standard airplane, is located by the window in the front section. (The study excluded seats with extra legroom.) Of those surveyed, 45% said that they prefer to sit in the first six rows and almost 60% said that they prefer to sit by the window.

40% of passengers said that when given the choice they opt for the aisle seat. Less than 1% prefer to sit in the middle seat. (Honestly, we’re shocked that anyone would choose the middle seat willingly!) 62% of respondents prefer an even seat number and 7% said they would choose the back row. Skyscanner proclaimed 31E, a middle seat near the back, to be “the worst seat” on the plane.

The site’s travel editor, Sam Baldwin, gave his thoughts on why individual passengers prefer specific airplane seats. “Anecdotally some passengers seem to opt for the middle section near the wings where they are less likely to feel turbulence while others want to be near the front for ease of getting off the plane, less engine noise or even to get a better choice of food available,” he said.

“The window seems a popular choice for those looking to sleep, especially for long haul flights, while those who take more trips to the toilet prefer to aisle so as not to disturb fellow passengers and the aisle is also popular for tall passengers looking to stretch their legs. Frequent fliers have also reported that the left hand side of the plane is best as the windows are off centre, allowing for wall space to lean on,” added Baldwin.

What about you SodaHeads? Excluding first class and seats with extra legroom, where do you prefer to sit on a standard airplane?

Close to the exit, next to the window if there is no one else in my row, but aisle if I have to sit with other people....claustrophobic.

On a British Airways 747-400... Seat 36H in Economy. I usually buy the ticket about 2-3 months before I leave, and I reserve this seat the day I buy the ticket. Since I make this round trip every year, I'm learning how I roll on a long flight. It is a bulkhead seat with a bathroom behind me. Some hate that, but I've learned to love it. Why?

    1. No seat behind me. On a flight that takes 9.5 hours from Phoenix to Heathrow and 10.5 hours coming back the other way, the knowledge that absolutely no children will be kicking the back of my seat gives me comfort.

    2. Aisle seat. I would rather have to get up for people than climb over people.

    3. Right side of cabin. I am left handed, so in the narrow seats of economy, my left elbow hits no one during mealtime.

    4. Full recline without the possibility of upsetting anyone behind me.

    5. Quick access to the toilet and galley when needed. On flights like that, it's nice to get up, go the galley, and request a cup of coffee. During the "slow hours" of the flight, you can sometimes BS with the flight attendants.

If the flight is 2 hours or less, I can tolerate any seat.

I would like to know: Seat 6A is the best? On what aircraft type?

I think they are saying 6A for the following reasons on the above model of course, first class, divider wall behind the seat (no one banging you seat), next to window to see out or lay up against to nap. The left side of the plane seems more natural to me as a right handed person just like you prefer the right side. I dont think they are saying seat 6A is the best seat on every aircraft just that the spot represented by 6A on the above model is...

I like the view from the window.

What worries me is that if Boeing ever does develop a blended-wing-body aircraft, the windows will be at a premium. Nearly everyone will have to sit in an expanded centerline section.

Of course, whoever plans the IFE can help. They offer all sorts of channels, and even true VOD on the more modern planes (like the Boeing Triple Seven). But they never included a look-ahead channel. Here's a suggestion, though I realize that it requires a new model for this minor hull mod: mount a camera in the nose and feed it into a live-video channel. That way we can see what the pilots see--sort of. (I don't expect a channel in the cockpit! I want the captain to concentrate on flying the plane, not mugging for a camera.)

Better yet: put pairs of cameras, one in the nose, the other in the belly (look-down). Then you can offer a true 3-D channel. Hand out the polarizing eyeglasses and let people watch the clouds coming at them.

Wouldn't be hard to do. Military aircraft such as the F-15 E (two seater) use a "Hud Repeater" so that the backseater can see what the pilot sees. Considering how small cameras are becoming, installing a couple of "hero cams" in the nose, tail, and even looking straight down would be amazing.

Hadn't thought of "hero cams" in the tail. Nothing much to see--unless you're flying west and away from a sunrise. Of course, you could also mount some on top, looking straight up. Planetarium cam!

I do like the window seat, for ease of sleeping as well as the ability to look out of it. The middle is fine with me. Still usually boards from the front of the plane.

Edit: oops, meant to vote window :/

Last Christmas, I paid $70 extra on my ticket for the nonstop long-haul from London to Phoenix (an exit row on a 747 is massive). When I saw the huge empty area, I was in front of me. Sadly, all of that was ruined by the 3 year old sitting behind me using the back of my seat for bass drum practice... the entire flight. To my left, there were two babies who cried the entire flight. Now I sit near the back of coach... no kids there.

The biggest consideration is sitting in a row with two skinny people , Prefer non business types. Loud mouths on the Cell phone and setting up a mini office with laptops and such are obnoxious as H*ll .
Thin women visiting family are the preferred companions on a plane . In particular if they prefer to read a book the whole trip.

always sit at the back if possible, never heard of a plane backing into a mountain and so the back seats are safest

I'm 6'3" so I like to sit "bulk head" @ the exit so I don't have a seat in front of me and can streach my legs out.

That's another reason to sit BH with no seat in front... You can get up 100 times during the flight & don't bother anyone :-)
