'Perfect' Plane Seat Pinpointed: Where Do You Prefer to Sit on an Airplane?

These days—unless you’re flying first class—airplane travel is bound to be at least somewhat uncomfortable. But, getting the seat of your choice can make the journey more tolerable. And according to a recent study by Skyscanner, there is one seat in particular that passengers are desperate to claim.

6A, which the travel search site deemed “the perfect seat” on a standard airplane, is located by the window in the front section. (The study excluded seats with extra legroom.) Of those surveyed, 45% said that they prefer to sit in the first six rows and almost 60% said that they prefer to sit by the window.

40% of passengers said that when given the choice they opt for the aisle seat. Less than 1% prefer to sit in the middle seat. (Honestly, we’re shocked that anyone would choose the middle seat willingly!) 62% of respondents prefer an even seat number and 7% said they would choose the back row. Skyscanner proclaimed 31E, a middle seat near the back, to be “the worst seat” on the plane.

The site’s travel editor, Sam Baldwin, gave his thoughts on why individual passengers prefer specific airplane seats. “Anecdotally some passengers seem to opt for the middle section near the wings where they are less likely to feel turbulence while others want to be near the front for ease of getting off the plane, less engine noise or even to get a better choice of food available,” he said.

“The window seems a popular choice for those looking to sleep, especially for long haul flights, while those who take more trips to the toilet prefer to aisle so as not to disturb fellow passengers and the aisle is also popular for tall passengers looking to stretch their legs. Frequent fliers have also reported that the left hand side of the plane is best as the windows are off centre, allowing for wall space to lean on,” added Baldwin.

What about you SodaHeads? Excluding first class and seats with extra legroom, where do you prefer to sit on a standard airplane?

Sadly I don't fly anymore. The change in altitude causes me Extreme pain! When I used to fly I always tried for a back seat near the window and the rear exit.

I've been working in aviation for over 30 years building and repairing Military and passenger jets. With that being said the sections behind the wings are the safest. In graphics below the most preferred seating are literal death zones during an aircraft mishap sections wings safest graphics seating literal death zones aircraft mishap

I don't fly anymore, but when I did, I preferred a seat next to the exit, even the emergency exit, more leg room and if something bad happened and I survived that part, I wouldn't freeze up, I would get that door open and get out if possible... I liked it either by the window or by the aisle, not in the middle. I used to fly standby quite a bit (had a close family member working for the airline) so I took what ever was available, the worst seat I ever had was at the very back of the plane, it was very noisy and bumpier.. The hardest part about flying standby was NOT telling the passenger next to you that your seat cost pennies on the dollar, that was against the rules, actually I prefer NOT talking to people on the plane, I would read a book, that usually said "I don't want to talk to you" in a nice way.

Front is quieter, and you get off first. No double entendre intended here, folks.

And the window seat is always cool.

I always go for the exit row window seat over the wing. The wing is the most stable part of the plane in turbulent weather, and the exit row gives extra room.

I have flown first class a few times, but my preference is last couple rows in tail section, window seat. Other than a mid air crash, or mid air explosion, more opportunity to get out of tail on a crash landing.

The reason I always try and get front section + Window seat is because I love to stare out the window. This doesn't always pay off but the one time we flew up past BC, Alaska, over Russia... wow we had the ultimate most perfect clear vision. Even the pilot came on to comment on the perfect views.
I could see every detail, roads, the ultimate 'tour' of Mt. McKinley, I could make out every mining operations, every little 'route' on the Bering Straight, I felt I could nearly make out people! I would have paid $2000 for that alone (never mind getting me to my destinations).
But for whatever reason I always seem to get a seat right behind the wing :(

I'm betting it's the "Emergency Exit" door, because there are only two seats in that row, and a couple can sit together without anyone else.
Myself I only sit in first class, won't fly if I can't, i like the extra room to kick back and don't like to be crowded like a sardine in a can like the rest of the aircraft has to do.

    first class or no class

Here's the problem. It would really depend on if I'm boarding first, deplaning last, or boarding last, deplaning first. Chances are as long as I get on the plane first, and deplane first, I'll sit anywhere in the front section.

I have flown enough miles, that now I have tons between mile accumulation and points on the credit card, that I fly first class as often as possible, unless it is a really short hop...
I use my miles to buy cheap and upgrade...First class is great if you are on a long flight, or you get stranded on the tarmac, or can't immediately get to a gate and have to sit for a long time. First class is so far from what first class used to be however,,,used to be you boarded long before the rest of the plane, and had time for a drink or two and to really relax....that really is no longer the case. And on the older planes the seats are still the small ones that the rest of the plane has...the really good thing is there is no middle seat and there generally more leg room. If you are a preferred flyer you also get that nice business class area, no food tho, but the front row has lots of leg room.

    I like the middle.
If the plane hits something the people in the front die first.
If the plane crash lands the tail is broken off first.

Any seat if fine with me, even a middle seat, if im sitting beside atleast one person im comfortable with.
I will KILL if i ever have to sit by the emergency exit again, those flight attendants wouldn't leave me alone, and kept telling me i didn't look well, Bitch i didn't have and makeup on! and i had just got off of a different plane!

This is a hard one and if its anything like sitting in a sardine can with wheels. Maybe back section window seat or atleast hoping for a seat near someone that doesn't react if I accidentally do something.

I think these are the best for the back end of the plane, usually over the wings, wider aisle, smoother ride...

I was on a flight where a man was yelling, demanding to sit at an emergency window. Thoughts went through my mind that he was crazy, going to do something drastic. Everyone was already seated. He really had this desperate look on his face.

If I can get it, the window seat in the middle of the plane; which always opens to the wing in the event of an emergency landing/deplaning You get about 6-12" of additional leg room in that row to accommodate folks in the event of an emergency deplaning. The seat is the same price and it's a sweet deal, especially for cross-country flights. But be quiet as most infrequent travelers are not aware of this.

I don't like airplanes! I would rather drive 10 hours than a 1 hour plane ride!
