They are stealing catalytic converters around here because they have palladium and rhodium in them. Apparently the thieves get about $250 for them and it cause $2,000 damage to the car. They're being cut right off of cars while sitting in public parking garages.

In Phoenix, catalytic converters on cars are a somewhat popular target because the catalyst contains very small amounts of platinum. Copper from street lights (especially older ones easier to access) is also popular.

Mostly copper, especially in the foreclosed homes. People will gut the houses, make them completely unlivable because they, for whatever reason, did not or could not pay their mortgages and they are angry with the banks for telling them get to steppin' !

Altho we have over 700k homeless people in America, but yet we have over 20 MILLION empty houses just sitting there gathering dust. Nice disparity there...

just about anything. in this area, they will not take scrap from anybody who won't show a photo ID. they also label things like manhold covers and catalytic converters with that persons name and have apprehended many people with cooperation from the scrap yards.

...and copper is vauable... Although a lot of the copper wiring stolen here is probably done by professionals with the proper spooling equipment.

The idea that the guy was blown out of his rubber slippers (flip-flops in other parts...) makes me smile. He was liesurely pulling wires until he hit the hot one.
