Passengers who scoff at the dinky seat belt on airplanes might want to reconsider. On Continental Flight 128 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Houston, Texas, the airplane hit some bad turbulence that caused the airplane to dip sharply at least two times. People who weren't wearing seat belts flew out of their seats, hitting their heads on the ceiling. One passenger described people "being thrown to the roof as if they were dolls." Some were knocked unconscious and others got their face cut up by broken plastic and glass from the lights. There is no way to predict turbulence, so to the pilots could not have warned the passengers. There were no deaths, but seven passengers had to go to the hospital.
