Only Half of Women Want a Job Outside the Home: Would You Rather Work or Stay at Home?

Talk about a balanced split. A new Gallop poll reveals that only about half of women (51 percent) would rather have a job outside the home rather than "stay at home and take care of the house and family," if given the choice to do either. Which would you rather do?

GALLUP.COM reports:
Half of all women in the U.S., 51%, say that if free to do either, they would rather have a job outside the home than "stay at home and take care of the house and family," similar to the rate seen since 2007. This contrasts with 76% of men.

Staying at home is work! I would rather stay at home, go without extras, get sh*t for pay & vacation time yet be the one raising my kids as opposed to society doing so!

Stay at home and work part-time because I need to be there for my kids and sort the house out, I can't go out to work and come back to a functioning house and family - it would be chaotic if I tried!

It takes a lot of hard work just to maintain a household. I would love to be at home tending to the business of a homemaker.

If my husband was rich then what better life than to stay at home and occupy myself with more interesting activities. But if staying at home meant being poor, and not being able to afford to do anything, then I would rather work

This is very true. Many of the stay at home moms I know are literally trapped inside their home because they can't even afford the gas to get out every now and then. They are upset and end up taking it out on the kids. No thanks.

I like being home and working outside the home. That's why I work part time. I was a stay-at-home mom up until my children went to college.

I agree in this day and age it is so. But stay at home moms are just as important and maybe more so since out side of school they are continually with their children and they are not left for baby sitters and nannies or grandparents to raise. I admire you for what you accomplishes day by day. I know it is not easy as you have two jobs one at work another at home.

I raised five kids and kept them and my house clean also had dinner on the table when my husband got home. I also took showers and put on nice clothes, perfume, and makeup. Many times My husband worked 99 hours a week. I also took care of my invalid mother. I for one resent your application. I never sat on my a-- as you called it. I admire women who work out side the home. But don't you dare put down stay at home moms. You are an insult to all women so get off your high nose ideas.

I know what you said. Sitting on your a--. It was the implication you made that home moms sat on theirs. So you don't have a husband kids so what. You did not say anything about your situation so I jumped to the wrong conclusion. You asked for my rudeness and presumption. The question was about stay at home moms or working. I raised five children as a stay at home mom and glad I did however I did not work as my husband wanted me at home with the kids just as MY Mother and His had. It is up to the couple and what they decide is the way it should be.

I sincerely don't know what to say to this. I was taught that blind faith and trust is for fools, and to always question why someone wanted me to do something, and to only do it if i personally agreed with it. I truly hope you were/are happy in your situation, because i most certainly wouldn't be.

I'd like to own my own business one day. I couldn't imagine just living my life staying at home and only doing chores every day (not that that is easy or there's anything wrong with it, just that I would personally be bored out of my mind). I like to work and if I ever have children, I'd like to think that I'll find a way to to do both. :p

Oh sure, working from home sounds like a dream, but I'd rather be AT work and not holed up in my own home quite honestly. Yeah gas prices are high and you can dodge them more as well as beat having to deal with annoying co-workers, but there's no experience like real on-site WORK experience.

I was both. The first 7 years I stayed at home to raise my infants. Now that they are older, I work full time. I make more money now than my husband and pay for my girls cheer, dance and expensive clothing and lifestyle I would rather work and then take two weeks paid vacation instead. And for the record, society doesn't raise my kids I do! Also I like having a pension and 401 K and to know I am contributing helps big time. My husband would rather I stay at home but I need to know if something happens to him, my kids will be fine I can become sole provider. I did it before when he lost his job. I like being a breadwinner and feel empowered!

I'd get bored real quickly. Besides I hate cleaning and cooking. I used to do homework and advanced readings just to get out of chores when I was a kid, so I don't think stay at home mom would ever be an option for me. Me and the hubby would probably split up the housework.

A few days off is fine, but it gets boring very quickly, especially when your job's not going that great. Get really good at your job and be a consultant; now you get to do both!

I definitely want to work. The thought of being a stay at home mom is about as appealing to me as being told that I have to go clean a public restroom. Nooo thanks. I'd go crazy.

To be perfectly honest with you, I would rather work from home but I have no real social skills and so that why I like my current job as a customer care rep. I talk on the phone for 8 hours and I talk to people and answer questions and solve problems. Sometimes I get the angry swearing people but whatever you deal with it. Then you also get the lady who doesn't know her own phone number.
It evens out.
I like what I do even if I do have to drive two miles to get to work. :)
