Slate.com:A new poll suggests that 1 in 20 Americans now call themselves atheists, a fivefold increase from the last time the survey was taken in 2005. The Religion News Service reports that, to go along with the jump, just 60 percent of Americans now identify as religious, down from 73 percent the last time the Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism poll was taken seven years ago. The decline has also been felt in many other countries around the world, including double-digit drops in several European and North American countries.

I don't worry about religion, I worry about the values that religion promotes.

In the US, most atheists abandon Judao-Christians principles and embrace modern leftism which is based on secular-humanism and neo-Marxism.

This is a terrible trend that will make America less tolerant, less prosperous and less free.

Are you joking or serious? I cannot tell.
Don't you have a conscience or set of ethics of your own?

Maybe God is just messing with us humans. He or she must be entertained with our crazyness. My religion taught me that God knows everything. So that means my destiny has already been determined. I just go with the flow

So you take no responsibility for anything you do and have no set of ethics besides what you have been told?
    That is not so good.
You are one person I really hope never loses their faith!

Yes. I agree. Sometimes I give in to the devil. I've been told that God is forgiving. So my backup plan is forgiving. Do you think God and the angels place bets on what we humans will do next. I think God gave us so many religions so to keep the excitment of war going none stop. After all, 99.9% of all wars are due to differences in religious beliefs

You do things based on avoiding punishment not based on having ethics? Do you see why that sounds scary to someone else.

My girl friend will be heart broken, if I tell her that I am married. We have a trip planned for Vegas on Labor Day weekend. I am taking her to MGM Grand Hotel. We are going to a show and tour Hoover Dam, and ride 4 wheelers in the dessert. After the trip, I'll break the news to her. I know God will forgive me. Besides, I am not married, my wife is. I had my fingers crossed when I said the marriage rules.

Nice sounding trip. According to what you say you believe, I am guessing you have separate rooms?

It sucks that he only, does not cheat on his wife because he is afraid and not because he wants to be an ethical person for its own value, or for his wife's sake.

    Yes and No.

People are starting to see the Darkness of Religion and it is very unappealing. People want to return to the Age of Rationalism... Also since people are becoming more accepting and tolerant of others, people are "coming out off the closet" Atheist. I have been Atheist for a while but was afraid to tell my family who are die hard Baptist and Catholic. People are just voicing their opinion a lot more, and people are being proud of it.

Also, there are so many people who are strong believers and won't let go. That is why there is such a big war on separation of Church and State. Atheist are starting to grow strong and so are Theist.

It more like 10 in 20 who have left the church and I can blame them with all the corruption. If you can trust your pastor who can you trust it as bad as government.
The church need to go back to the basic teaching of the the Christian Church. You know why we are here, why Jesus Christ came to this earth, the simple basics.

I believe I have seen this statistic before and honestly it does not surprise me. Being an agnostic atheist myself I was never raised with religion, but I know others who were raised in religious households. I have seen a few of them turn away from their church, not their religion or belief in their deity(s), but from the church because they disagreed with their teachings or interpretations. For example, one of my friends is homosexual and he was scared to tell his parents he would no longer be attending church because of their views on homosexuality among other things. Another friend, although I believe she still attends church with her family, she disagrees with some of their teachings which are turning her away.

I think there are many reasons why more people are becoming atheists. One being the organized religions and certain churches who are too extreme and push people away. There is also more information easily found in places such as the internet, not just in America but all around the world. People can look into the history of their religion, other theories, religions, ect and they may find something that fits them and their beliefs better. They can ask questions and get answers. I also believe being from other religions in America or having no religion is becoming more acceptable so who are more exposed to them and it is more acceptable to come out and say that you are one.

I'm not saying faith or a belief in God is a crock. I'm saying people would probably would be better off without organized religion and all it's mumbling money-grubbing rituals.

If religious faith were effective, insurance companies would surely have been the ones to differentiate it statistically beyond simple logical probability. I wonder what they have to say?

I totally believe in my God but I don't want my kid to pray in school( matt6:6.) And I don't want a teacher to teach him something other than what he learned from me. But I do agree with you 100 percent on the immoral BS they're trying to teach kids in school

Religion should facilitate spiritual growth. To that end religion no matter what its form will always be here. It may not be in judaochristian forms but it will be with us even if its personalized. Religion is not necessary but spirituality is , religion is a construct of man the spirit is divine.

... and this is due to the hypocrisy of the GOP and conservatives because they are always claiming to be such Christians yet they oppose all Christ like paradigms such as the Affordable Healhcare Act that will help millions who don't have healthcare to be able to see a doctor.

I really don't blame some people. To me if God existed, why would he let his people suffer? What lesson is he trying to teach? And if he were real, all these people that aren't priests or anything, claiming to be God's mouth piece or on the same level with God- shouldn't they have been eradicated by know? Even though I'm agnostic, the Deist version of God seems more... plausible than Christian God.

The American people are becoming brainwashed; if you listen to and participate in crap-shoot politics like we currently have, many people are just giving up. Young children who should be subjected to religion in school so they can make a real choice in life, have had the opportunity to learn taken away, all because of the wording in very document the "In God We Trust" nation was founded on.

Maybe the schools with their tight budgets, large class sizes, and already poorly paid teachers have no time to give your child a religious indoctrination. Maybe you should get up on Sundays do that yourself In fact, what the hell is stopping you from reading the bible to your kids every night? I find the people who most cry about what's on TV messing with their kids are the last people to get up and turn damn thing off.

There will always be people who believe in God. Even so, that's not that many people compared to the United States as a whole. Personall, I don't care what other people believe, or don't believe, because it's not my business.
