Slate.com:A new poll suggests that 1 in 20 Americans now call themselves atheists, a fivefold increase from the last time the survey was taken in 2005. The Religion News Service reports that, to go along with the jump, just 60 percent of Americans now identify as religious, down from 73 percent the last time the Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism poll was taken seven years ago. The decline has also been felt in many other countries around the world, including double-digit drops in several European and North American countries.

I don't worry about religion, I worry about the values that religion promotes.

In the US, most atheists abandon Judao-Christians principles and embrace modern leftism which is based on secular-humanism and neo-Marxism.

This is a terrible trend that will make America less tolerant, less prosperous and less free.

A more sobering thought is found in Matthew 7:14

"But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and ONLY A FEW FIND IT ..."

Most who consider themselves to be Christian are not, so in reality while 1 in 20 is realitively small, those Americans who genuinely follow Christ is shockingly small compared to those who claim to!

I found it sad the other day reading the responses of those who answered the question:- "Are you proud to be a Christian" that the leading respondent couldn't do so without turning it into a political comment!

Note the increase in "not religious but spiritual" which was not covered in this poll

Irellevant, he's as much entitled to discuss religion as much as any theist.

Kozmo I don't know about "irrelevant" your spelling "Irellevant" is illegal!

Besides your comment is irrelevant because there is no question of Art as an atheist being unable to discuss any topic or issue he likes!

As an atheist and 1 in 20 he brings a unique perspective to the discussion well done Art and but out Kozmo!

You're dodging the issue by nit-picking on a common typo (I'm not the only one doing it). I though your comment about Art being an Atheist insinuated that he was not qualified to discuss religion.

I have addressed the issue re Art!

I respond to what I see, some people on this site are nearly blind, others have ingrown toe nails, still other have dodgey hearts!

How do you want me to treat you?

If you come to a site such as SH it can get rough at times!

We all have personalities which are not perfect!

Due to my condition (actually ALL have [Caetextia q.v.], more or less), BOTH parties keep mis-reading the context of what each say. Just a little patience & consideration if I go off-track (be Relative too, please).

Art was using the statistic re atheist to have a shot at the left.

Art holds in common with atheists a belief in evolution!

That's why I questioned him on atheism which he ignored!

"In the US, most atheists abandon Judao-Christians principles and embrace modern leftism which is based on secular-humanism and neo-Marxism."

Where do you get that from? None of my atheist friends have adopted any extreme leftist ideology. In fact, most of them are actually either moderate independents or Ron Paul supporters.

"This is a terrible trend that will make America less tolerant, less prosperous and less free."

The most intolerance I have seen has come from Christians (I am not saying all). I am agnostic but I support and defend the freedom of religion. Whether it be with homosexuality or Muslims, far right Christians have not shown much tolerance to begin with.

The only thing that makes a person an atheist is their rejection of the God theory. Otherwise we differ in every way you can imagine. Some atheists may be fans of Carl Marx but to say "Marxism is a trend of atheism" is nothing but a bullsh!t fear tactic. Religion is by far the most terrible trend in all of human history. Humanism is the only sensible alternative.

Religion and government often clash and it is just a fact of history that as government expands it must ether embrace and foster one STATE religion of do away with all religion .
For America to become the totalitarian dictatorship liberals dream about religion and free will must be among the first casualties

ironic how they shout and chant change and progress but claim we of faith are trying to take some mythical liberties away from "them" ...it is up to each of us to know who is who before the fighting starts for we will fall not to the open enemies that we see but to the ones we do not see in our own homes and families . 255 of my own family will have to die as they have already chosen Government and Atheism over human rights and liberty -

Conservative fundamentalists are the one's who dream of turning America into "one nation under God". There is no free will in a theocracy. Liberals only dream of doing away with religion to protect free will.

how is my faith and my absolute right to religious freedom a threat to you ? Only the communist manifesto sets up a reason for attacking and destroying faith and it does so for very clear reasons ....your lies about Atheists being anything other than the bastard children of Marx and that they are not far more violent and dangerous than an y other religion are sick-

reason ? on what grounds do you abuse the word reason after making demands that others change to fit your New World Order view point ? My future vision has room in it for people like you but yours has no room for people like me ....and this is why civil war is unavoidable-

Because Christians can't keep to themselves and impose religious laws and customs within the government. Christians only want freedom of religion for themselves.

    Marx didn't create Atheism, moron.
