N.Y. second-grade teacher tells students there is no Santa Claus?

~ The Rebel ~ 2011/12/07 23:19:46

NANUET, N.Y. — A New York elementary school teacher is the subject of some Christmas controversy this week after she apparently told her 7-year-old students there is no Santa Claus, according to a report on LoHud.com.

During a discussion of the North Pole, the second-grade geography teacher, who was not named in the report, apparently told the children their holiday presents were purchased by their parents, not Santa, the report said.

I'm not sure what should be done to this idiot. How dare she burst that magical bubble. As a parent I certainly would be angry.

Bitch needs to teach at the high school or not at all. Who the hell made her queen of the world? If she had done that to my child I would have gone to the school and told those kids in front of her that she is a liar... then put my child in a different class because that bitch has no idea how to work with children. That would have been on a good day... on a bad day I might have gone to jail for sending the teacher to see if doctors are real.

That is awful!!! She could have simply deferred whatever question a child asked (which I am assuming was something like 'Ms. ___, where is Santa at the North Pole?') to the child's parents. It would have been easy to do.

Again, another example of educators going where educators are not suppose to go.

“I don’t believe there is a God,” seven-year-old John told his mother. A World Herald article explains why: “John, it seemed, had learned earlier that day that Santa Claus wasn’t real. Maybe God wasn’t real either, he told his mother.” Recalling his early disillusionment, 25-year-old John said: “When parents tell children Santa is real, I think that probably is a breach of trust.”
What to do about this delicate situation? Child experts disagree. One encouraged parents to tell their children the truth by age six or seven, warning that “it may actually be harmful to their psyches if parents persist in perpetuating the myth.”
In the book Why Kids Lie—How Parents Can Encourage Truthfulness, Dr. Paul Ekman states: “There is no doubt that you as parents have a major influence on your children when it comes to attitudes, beliefs, and social actions such as lying or cheating.” Ekman continues: “Relationships may not be the same once a lie has violated trust. The loss of trust is difficult to repair; sometimes it is never reparable.” So why carry on deception when it comes to holiday giving?

Psychobabble!! I cannot think of one person who has had damage from believing in Santa and then finding out they were lied to.

I found out Santa didn't exist at age 11. I didn't trust my parents for 2 years afterwards.

I am never going to lie to my children; especially not for a silly myth.

Phew....glad I'm not your future child. You might want to remind your future children to keep their mouths shut to others or you're going to have a large group of angry parents at your front door when your child "let's the cat out of the bag."

So... The Children will have found out one way or another.

I was told Santa was real as a Kid, a small part of me still hates my parents for that. Mostly because we didn't have much money, we never got stuff, like my friends did. I was happy with what I got, but Always wondered why my friends got more. I would have been so much happier knowing My Parents were the ones doing the work to see my brothers and me, happy on Christmas.

I don't plan to tell my kids(when I have any) That Santa is real. Why Would I lie about a mythic character, When I wouldn't expect them to Lie to me.

I'm thinking the hate you supposedly harbor for your parents goes a little deeper than the Santa Claus issue.

I still remember in my public school, the science teacher was going on and on about how the world was created and how the accepted scientific thoughts were flawed... I assume she believed in Santa till she was in her 30's.

If you fill a kids head with B.S. you get B.S. out.... and then they court the religious rite to solicit for campaign contributions and attempt to pass hate laws.

Good, kids need these kooky myths to be ironed out early... Or, they might grow up to become religious nutjobs.
They should iron out that batty christmas fable as well.

A childhood filled with cognitive reasoning and critical thinking... I would venture to say that made me a more intelligent child than the kids who did not question santa and the tooth fairy. Some kids require more than fairy tales and pretty pictures to fill their skulls, some kids (very few) think about what is real and fake as opposed to just accepting what they are told.

Well then it's a matter of personal opinion. We did tell our child there was a Santa, a Tooth Fairy, an Easter Bunny. She had a wonderful childhood. While she has no children yet she too will carry on this tradition. If a child feels harmed by the fantasy I think they're anger or resentment goes much deeper than the Santa Claus myth. No? Hey life is full of crap for kids anymore..why not give them a little fun and fantasy?

True... I was just being a grinch, because it's that season for the grinches to pop out their green little heads. Still, telling kids that there is a tooth fairy, can lead to dental problems, when they see all the cash they can make for not brushing.
