North Texas school district will let teachers carry guns - Ya think they'll have discipline problems?

Butch Cassidy August 16, 2008 05:54:51

"HARROLD, Texas — A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls."

Although for day to day behavior, I don't think the gun will be what effects discipline, it will be a teacher with a cool head ("crisis management") and a plan ("hostile situations").

I doubt it will change how the kids act. I might dissuade kids like the ones at Columbine, but otherwise, business as usual. Schoolage kids think they are invincible and aren't afraid of death. I think it's scary, I can't trust the teachers hear to be fair to my child, but I can trust them to carry and potentially use a gun?

I would be talking to that teacher if I couldn't trust them to be fair with my child. That's messed up.
Only teachers I wouldn't trust with a gun are the ones who don't want to wear one anyway so no big deal there.

    Yep

yes... Ill be very suprised if they dont wind up with an accidental shooting in the very near future due to a teacher mistakenly thinking somones pulling a gun or showing it off or something the 'untrained' tend to do..... if the teachers want to carry guns, I say make them go through a police taught course and get a special license or something to reduce the chances somone is just trigger happy. I certainly wouldnt want it to be MY kid that gets shot because a teacher was to quick to assume....

Being a Texan I can tell you you have it better in Arizona. You have open carry.
    We don't.
    Yet
If anyone reading this votes in Texas, can you help us get open carry legislation rolling?

Klebold and Harris would not have gotten as far as they did if a teacher who was armed and trained to use a gun would have been there.

Reread the article. The guns idea isn't about in school violence it was because the school felt they might possibly be a target for violence from the freeway even though it has never happened before.

Because the guns are not intended to manage discipline.

If they want to improve discipline, let the teachers carry a paddle, and encourage them to use them!
