How long could you survive without the internet? One day? One week? One month? Paul Miller, 26, is trying to live without the internet for one whole year. So far, Miller has been offline for 3 months. He hasn't sent an email, clicked a link, sent a text message, or used web browser since May 1st of this year.

The ABC News article goes on to say that Miller loves the internet. However, he is also aware that the internet is a giant distraction and he wanted to unplug for a while. Miller states, "I found it very distracting and I wanted to spend time studying and writing uninterrupted. I wanted to read books that I could have read at any time, but instead I was reading Reddit. I wanted to write things I wanted to write for a long time, but instead I was tweeting." Do you think you could survive without the internet for one year?

ABCNEWS.GO.COM reports:
For one whole year Paul Miller will live without the Internet, and as of publishing this article, Miller has not been online for three months.

I need it for work, I have to e-mail with my german colleagues and write papers and do internet research - it wouldn't be possible in my position.

I lived many years without the internet so if for some reason I was forced to live without it for a year I could do it without no anxiety or worries what so ever.

Now saying that, as long as I do not have to give up the internet I will continue to use it. Should I have to do without it I guess I will be reading a lot of books.

also it would be harder to find a new job, get a better deal on things not regularly advertised in a local newspaper or broadcast tv, and make social contacts beyond your personal circle of regular acquaintances

True but as I said I remember not all that long ago when the internet did not exist and we seemed to do alright. While the internet is convenient it is not a necessity. Necessities are the things I would have a hard time without for any period of time.

While the internet is convenient it is not a necessity. Of coarse modern tech has made much of what we have in the way of creature comfort and security seem like necessities but with a little survivalist knowledge we could thrive without much of our creature comforts. We may not like it but we would adapt. Our ancestors did alright and took nothing for granted. To tell you the truth if we were to have to go back at least 150 years we would appreciate things a bit more and take nothing for granted.

How long could you survive without indoor plumbing? Without heat?

This ABC story is grandstanding by some self-satisfied a-hole who thinks he's better than you now.

I am all in favor of Western Civilization. We worked for 10,000 years and more to get where we are, with indoor plumbing, clothing that buttons, electricity, television, radio, cars and trucks, and ESPECIALLY the internet. I work to make it happen, I am proud that it is in the world.

I'll have no truck with anyone who says Western Civilization is evil. The smirking of self-satisfied little gimboids and luddites makes me want to use my modern rail-gun to redecorate them. Improve and the race grows; stagnate and race dies. Choose.

I can see where you're coming from but there are many among us who can't survive without these amenities...which is all that they are, amenities. When we turn our backs on our animalistic roots it will come back to bite us in the ass. I, personally, could live without any modern amenities and be perfectly happy. But then again i'm not sure there are a significant number of people in America that would even know where to begin.

I say no because I use the internet for business purposes; selling product, etc. If I didn't have a professional interest in using the internet... strictly as a personal hobby... I'd have no problems giving up the internet for the year.

My business relies on internet communication. So, unless I want to starve under a bridge somewhere, I need to access internet. Also, my family is spread all over the country and I use the internet to keep in touch with them without spending an arm and leg on long distance phone charges. People who try to feel "noble" and righteous by making a big deal about avoiding the internet, should also wear hair shirts and sleep on a bed of nails. THEN maybe we will be impressed by them.

I live in a pretty rural area, so 90% of my college classes are taken online. Going off line for a year would only delay my degree for a year.
Though maybe after college is done? By then, I'll probably be happy to avoid the computer for a while!

We have to market ourselves in order to sell anything and therefore be able to survive.

It's stupid to not use the tools that are out there for us to use.

I wish there was a maybe answer.. (-; I have went without it for a few weeks by choice. I found that when I disabled my Facebook for 4 months I had alot of time on my hands and was able to do more than I have in a long time. There are days I like to shut my phone and computer off just to enjoy what G-d has given us!! (of course it makes people mad when I don't answer their calls or text because society thinks you should have your phone on you and on all of the time)

In 2012, its impossible to do even the simplest, high school research project without the internet. Plus, teachers require papers or even homework to be typed, rather than handwritten.

But Mr. Miller is correct. We are often preoccupied with the internet as a toy, rather than as a tool.
