A New Jersey man was having problems with squirrels entering his Linden home through a hole. In order to stop them, he killed a few with his BB gun and hung them on his fence, like a warning to pirates entering a port.

Linden, NJ Man Faces Fines, Jail Time Under Animal Cruelty Charges for Shooting and Hanging Squirrels on His Fence

Richard Baird (Photo: Linden Police Department)

Now Richard Baird is facing $250 to $1,000 in fines and up to six months in jail under animal cruelty charges.

According to MyFoxNY, police say the 49-year-old man baited the squirrels by putting peanut butter on his tree, at which point he shot them when they approached it. Police are unsure exactly why Baird hung the squirells on his fence. Six squirrels were found hanging, while a few others were on the ground.

Baird told the authorities he had tried to cover the hole into his house but it wasn’t effective at keeping the critters out.

NewJersy.com reports Baird’s court summons is issued for June 26.

In that case I should be facing about 200 years. Squirrel with rice and beans makes a tasty dish.

More ignorant laws that should be erased from the books. Squirrels are nothing more then tree crawling rats. Too many cities are falling down on the job by allowing these filthy things to breed and run wild. I'd give him and award for pest control. The worthless buzzards ate all but 12 ears of my corn last year, all of my watermelon and cucumber plants and feasted on my tomatoes and beans. If I had a BB gun I'd be doing the same.

If he had just tossed them out instead of hanging them on a fence, he probably would have been just fine.

Squirrels can tear a house up, that's for sure, I view them as fuzzy tailed tree rats. Yet hanging the vermin from a fence served no useful purpose other than create a health risk and piss off the neighbors. Fairly powerful BB gun he had too. 6 months would be a hard stretch, don't the courts in NJ have more important things to do?

He may face "UP TO" 6 months doesn't mean that he will. So he hasn't been sentenced. And if he hasn't been sentenced then I can't agree or disagree. But it was stupid of him to hang the dead squirrels around to rot regardless. Not smart.

Are squirrels an endangered species now? Gosh I didn't know that. Maybe this guy should be thrown behind bars for 10 years instead. In case you didn't get it I'm being sarcastic. This is ridiculous.

Punishment is too harsh, but hanging them on the fence is pretty sick, and he should have got some professional help (or even looked it up on the Internet to get some advice) before he did something so foolish. I do not think 30 days would be harsh though, he needs to learn a lesson not to be so foolish.

Not prison ... some don't even do time for shooting human beings! Hanging them on the fence was over the top. I say fine the guy for the crude display. (A row of rotting flesh must be a health hazard.)

Rats, whether tree or otherwise, should be dealt with equally. In this case a BB gun was the cheapest and most expedient way. tree rats

We have already lost our right to defend our home from intruders without fear of a lawsuit or jail. What is next?? Killing rats and mice? Maybe roaches?

He should have shot them but putting them on the fence was a foolish move. There are plenty of great recipes for squirrel, eating them would have been a much better option and no one would have known he shot them.

He was very foolish! He should have hired Dick Cheney to hunt squirrel in his backyard!
